Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Women Who Write) for Monday, January 31, 2022 (Season 38, Game 101):
Mimicking her style, a 1912 rejection note read: “Only one look, only one look is enough. Hardly one copy would sell here. Hardly one”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Riley Timmreck, a student from Houston, Texas![]() |
Matthew McElroy, a high school history teacher from Wildwood, New Jersey![]() |
Jay Foster, an engineer from Rancho Palos Verdes, California (1-day total: $13,600)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Jeopardy! is in the third day of its post-Amy Schneider world, as Jay Foster returns to the studio as champion.
Meanwhile, we are 8 days from the start of the primetime Jeopardy! National College Championship on ABC. There is so much conflicting information on the Internet about this tournament, and still no official format announcement. ABC is dropping the ball pretty badly when it comes to their promotional efforts here, and I find that incredibly disappointing.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: Who is Gertrude Stein?

In 1912, author Gertrude Stein sent a manuscript to London publisher Alfred C. Fifield (the work would be published in 1925 as The Making of Americans: Being a History of a Family’s Progress.) It had deliberately been written using significant repetition in the vocabulary, and the publisher chose to mimic that in its rejection letter.
Mental Floss has a copy of that rejection letter.

Today’s interviews:
Riley grew up wanting to be a Radio City Rockette.
Matthew reads all of the time when growing up and now reads to his son.
Jay met his wife four years after college even though they both went to neighboring small schools.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Mayim Bialik returned to hosting the show today. I’m glad she remembered to remind Riley that she could bet up to $1,000 (even though she didn’t heed the advice); however, it still feels to me that Ken is a significantly better quiz moderator than Mayim is. Pausing on Auburn (waiting for Auburn University) feels like something that a inexperienced quiz moderator would do, and really only serves to delay the proceedings.
- That being said, I would not blame Mayim for the two unplayed clues. To me, that’s on the fact that there were 14 incorrect responses and 11 Triple Stumpers.

Rude rejection. Rejection is rude. A rude person is a rude person is a rude person.
Triple stumping. Triple stumping. Triple stumping.
Just saw TV promo saying 36 students in college tournament
So I guess it’ll be 2 games per night for 6 nights to start, yielding 12 semi finalists?
There’s so much conflicting information—including the fact that the show’s website itself says “teams”—that I can’t confirm anything.
The page for the event at ABC’s website mentions “36 students from 36 colleges and universities across the country” — which implies to me that the contestants are competing individually.
That said, your comments about the information available and our inability to base or plan anything on it, this close to the start of the event, are on the money.
LOVE the DD2 bet by Jay. He has redeemed himself for his zero FJ bet on Friday!
I’ve taken to calling Mayim “Whyim” as in, “Why am I hosting Jeopardy?”, because neither she nor anyone else I know seems to be able to answer that question.
I will say this, though: I don’t think Ken or Mayim should host the next ToC lest that give players who have experience with the host a leg up in the competition. Buzzy is an obvious choice to return to host and would be the right pick, in my opinion.
Jay and Matthew both made good FJ wagers also, which is something I like to see.
I missed the FJ as well. All I know about Gertrude Stein is the “rose” quote :/
Yeah, but I would have preferred to see Matthew wager 4K on the last daily double – with only three clues left on the board, if he got it right, he’d be in the lead, and if he missed it, he’d still have more than half of Jay.
Another good win by Jay, particularly since he was able to come to the studio on a new tape day and acclimate himself to another host with little (or no) prior warning. I have to agree with you, Andy, that Ken has been the superior quizmaster. It’s somewhat ironic, but where Ken really shines is his ability to fade into the background and let us forget who the host is for 30 minutes. Mayim’s presence, on the other hand, is quite obvious — and while she is amiable, at least to viewers like my family and me, it is not the right quality to have when hosting this show.
I’m going to go out on a limb and speculate that Mayim’s resumed stint on the syndicated show is not only an accommodation for her busy schedule, but also to act as a proxy cross-promotion for the primetime College Championship without explicitly mentioning it on air. I am looking forward to that tournament, however it is formatted, but I really hope that Ken can be a permanent host in some capacity moving forward.
(I hope I was able to communicate my thoughts diplomatically.)
Well put, Kara. Ken is the superior host and helped make a more seamless transition.
I have always thought Buzzy was the obvious choice to take over the show. He is professional and polished. I wonder why he wasn’t even given a chance. Maybe if more people pointed this out, he’ll get the opportunity.
Seconded.
add me to Camp Buzzy
I thought Buzzy was great when he hosted the Tournament of Champions last year. Add me to the list.
On the list, for sure
To quote Andy’s 2017-11-20 post, “… if Buzzy became host, a bunch of the greats wouldn’t be able to ever come back for super-tournaments! And that wouldn’t be much good for the show overall.” Is that still a concern?
At this point? You can’t really un-ring a bell. The ship sailed on that one when Buzzy hosted the Tournament of Champions.
Gertrude Stein was probably the answer I would have thought of but not sylvia plath. Glad to see Mayim back hosting again so I am really hoping Jay can recoup his loss after this triple stumper. I also would like to see a 4k daily double wager from matt as well.
Andy, do you know if the host is responsible for the initial judgment for a contestant’s response? I’m trying to think of why there was such a delayed ruling with the “Auburn” response. Seems like a no-brainer that it should have been accepted immediately in place of “Auburn University.”
As far as I know, yes, the host is generally responsible for the initial judgement.
I could only come up with Woolf and Cather for the FJ, and was leaning towards the latter. Turns out it was Stein and not Woolf or Cather. It was Stein indeed, yup.
Mayim was better today than she had been before. She felt less uptight and actually reminded Riley of the rules with DDs. Ken is still better (the Auburn thing was indeed weird, and Ken would have accepted it) and still does it for the love of Jeopardy. Still not sure why Mayim is doing this when she’s so busy. Overachiever, probably, but Jeopardy needs a host who isn’t one of those.
I don’t get why they evidently needed “Auburn University” yet deemed “Purdue” (without the University) sufficient.
Auburn is also a city in Alabama which is probably the reason for the added “university” where as Purdue is not in a city of the same name.
Growing weary of switching hosts every few weeks. I was really enjoying Ken.
