Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, March 16, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Movie Stars) for Wednesday, March 16, 2022 (Season 38, Game 133):

Matthew McConaughey said, “‘Dazed & Confused’, the first words I ever said on film were” these

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Evan Freeman, a veterinarian from Georgetown, Ontario, Canada
Evan Freeman on Jeopardy!
Katie Hargrove, a personal assistant & writer from Redondo Beach, California
Katie Hargrove on Jeopardy!
Amy Bekkerman, an academic copy editor from Durham, New Hampshire (2-day total: $54,100)
Amy Bekkerman on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Amy Bekkerman—from Durham, New Hampshire, not Durham, North Carolina (which is what the last two box scores have said)—has two wins and $54,100. The box scores have been interesting over the last eight weeks: the average contestant makes between 33 and 34 attempts on the signalling device a game. While she had 38 attempts overall in the game, Amy had a strong game on the Daily Doubles yesterday, picking up $12,000 in sweeping all three of them. What will Game 3 look like for her? Canadian Evan Freeman and Californian Katie Hargrove are hoping that things look more like Game 1 than Game 2 for Amy.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

In a 2018 interview with Savannah Guthrie on Today, Matthew McConaughey said regarding his famed catchphrase, “It is three affirmations,” he explained. “What it does for me … that’s the first three words I said in my first film ‘Dazed and Confused,’ and now, I’m doing that in 1992. I don’t know if that (acting) is going to be a hobby. It turned out to be a career 26 years later.” How did this come about? In a 2011 interview, McConaughey said that he was inspired by Jim Morrison (of The Doors) saying the word on stage.

(Editorial Note: The Jeopardy! Fan has elected to use “alright” instead of “all right” as “alright” appears to be used in the majority of articles on this subject.)

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round categories: Call Me Sometime; NYC Neighborhoods; Succession; Bowl-O-Rama; Numerical Phrases; Can I Make You a Drink?

Amy went to SUCCESSION $600, found the Daily Double, but missed it. She did rebound, though, to the positive by the first break. Both Katie and Evan had a good start to the game as well. Coming out of the break, all three players were very strong, and a very competitive match—with only one Triple Stumper— saw all three players between $4,000 and $6,000 after Single Jeopardy.

Double Jeopardy! Round categories: National Flags; Plays; Celebrity “M.D.”s; Science & Medicine; Aviation; Online & Texting Abbrev.

In an occurence that hasn’t happened on the show in regular play in at least the last 18 years, Amy found the Daily Double on Clue #1 for the second consecutive round, and she picked up $2,000. Later in the round, Evan fumbled a True Daily Double, but recovered $4,800 before the end of the round. Katie continued her zero-incorrect performance to ensure a strong lead going into Final, with $14,600, to Amy’s $8,600 and Evan’s $4,800.

In Final, the two challengers got Final correct, and Katie became the new champion!

Today’s interviews:
Evan is going to get a tattoo now that he’s been on Jeopardy!
Katie was in the womb when her mother was on Family Feud.
Amy had a dream job at 8 years old to be a member of the Clue Crew.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I enjoyed that “Can I Make You a Drink?” was all about non-alcoholic versions of drinks—fitting, as Ken is a well-known teetotaler.
  • I also enjoyed that the “Online & Texting Abbrev.” category were all things I’d actually seen online, and not the more contrived abbreviations that have populated these categories in the past.
  • Viewers are also reminded that the judges have the ability to isolate and re-listen to all contestant pronunciations, and that if a ruling is not overturned, that the judges are satisfied that the contestant pronounced a response to their liking.
  • Today’s boxscore will be linked to once provided by the show.

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:

Katie: The standard cover bet today is $2,601. If you’re going to go higher, keep Evan locked out by betting no more than $4,799 (but I’d keep the bet to $2,601 just in case Amy doesn’t bet enough.)

Amy: This is a crush game, so I’d go all-in here. The absolute minimum here, though, is $3,400.

Evan: There’s a good chance of Amy betting $6,001, so I’d probably keep the bet to a maximum $2,200 (and a minimum of $401, just in case Amy goes for $3,400.)

  1. What other words could they be??? If all three contestants don’t get FJ, I’ll be disappointed. Seems like a no-brainer. Although, to be honest, I doubt that my 90-year-old mother will know.

  2. had to read the clue a couple times to understand it, but once it was, knew it right away (though would have spelled it all right all right all right)

  3. I was confused by the excessive punctuation
And why was the film’s name necessary?
Why not simply the first words he ever said on film were these?

    • ScubaSteve | March 16, 2022 at 3:02 pm |

I’m with you. But I would never have answered this FJ correctly because I’ve never seen a Matthew McConaughey film.

      • I’ve never seen one either but he’s said it frequently in interviews and at awards shows

      • Then you are really missing something — try ‘Mud’ or ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ or ‘The Dallas Buyer’s Club’.

    • “Why not simply the first words he ever said on film were these?”
something from home movies (which at the time, would be on super 8 or some other type of film)

tch I had no idea 🤷

    Current FJ streak – 1L

  5. Former Jeopardy champions Alan Lin and Mehrun Etebari were on the game show “25 Words or Less” yesterday and today. They were awesome. They were introduced as trivia buddies, with no mention of Jeopardy. If you don’t know the show, two pairs of contestants are each matched with a celebrity entertainer or sports personality. As you would expect, Lin and Etebari absolutely nailed everything they could control. Unfortunately, the contestants are heavily dependent on the celebrity playing the game at least competently. They had that the first day and won the $10K top prize, but the celebrity they were matched with today had never been on the show before this week, and hopefully won’t be invited back.

  6. Looks like all 3 contestants are alright, alright, alright… I look forward to watching.

  7. I prefer the spelling “awl write, awl write, awl write”

  8. I always had the idea that “you” is third person, because it’s like “usted” which I thought of as third person, but now I just read that you is second person and that usted is second person but functions grammatically as third person.
