Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Nonfiction) for Thursday, March 17, 2022 (Season 38, Game 134):
This 1962 classic was dedicated to Albert Schweitzer, who predicted that man “will end by destroying the earth”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s contestants:
Joel Levinson, a head of content from Yellow Springs, Ohio![]() |
Finn Corrigan, a student from Vista, California![]() |
Katie Hargrove, a personal assistant & writer from Redondo Beach, California (1-day total: $17,201)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Katie Hargrove unseated a 2-day champion yesterday in Amy Bekkerman, and she gets to defend her title on this St. Patrick’s Day. One important note: If you watch Jeopardy! on a CBS affiliate, you’re very likely going to have to watch Jeopardy! at a different time today and tomorrow because of March Madness. Please check your local listings—the show will be airing at different times depending on where you live: some earlier, some overnight over the weekend. There are too many CBS stations for me to keep track of here.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is Silent Spring?
More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2022 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
In the dedication to Silent Spring, Rachel Carson wrote, “Man has lost the capacity to foresee and to forestall. He will end by destroying the Earth”—words that were part of a letter from Albert Schweitzer to a beekeeper about to lose his colony to pesticides. The book brought the environmental movement further into public consciousness—but it could definitely be said that mankind still definitely lacks the capacity to foresee and forestall global warming.

Jeopardy! Round categories: Ballet; 7-Letter Grab Bag; Beastly Lit; Circumflexing On You; Sports with No Balls; Irish Name Derivations
Katie continued early on with her strategy of “don’t be wrong”; she got the first three clues tonight (including the first Daily Double)—but failed to ring in after that until after the interviews. I’ll be very curious to see her attempt statistics tonight, as I suspect she’s choosing not to take enough chances. (That being said, “Don’t be wrong” isn’t a terrible strategy.)
As you can probably tell, I write these in real time as the episode moves along: Katie took her first two incorrect responses of her Jeopardy! career on clues 18 and 20 of the Jeopardy! round. She did rebound from those to only be behind by $600 after Single Jeopardy!, with the aptly-named-for-today Finn holding the lead and Joel picking first in the second round.
Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Let’s Have a Confluence; Movie & TV Role In Common; Throwing Shade; History Quick Takes; Chemical People; “X”s & “O”s
Finn found both Daily Doubles in Double Jeopardy, but unfortunately for him, he dropped both of them. He also didn’t find the last one until very late in the round, and it very nearly cost him the lead going into Final, but he rebounded well by picking up the $2,000 clue to retake the lead at the end-of-round signal. Going into Final, the scores saw Finn at $10,800, Katie at $9,800, and Joel at $2,400.
Final Jeopardy! saw Katie and Finn getting the clue correct, and Finn bet enough to become Jeopardy! champion! I will say, though, that Joel will very likely be seen as a very memorable contestant.

Joel travelled the country as a teen as part of a Jewish teen singing group.
Finn went to Baja California to see a bunch of baby whales.
Katie has had a teddy bear since she was 8 months old, named Squishy Bottoms.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Thank you to WRDW in Augusta, Georgia for sticking with its published schedule—unlike WNEM in Flint, Michigan.
- Being that contestants, on average, do better on Daily Doubles than they do in Final Jeopardy!, Finn’s chances of winning would have been higher had he went all-in on the last Daily Double (playing for the runaway) instead of trying to hold a slim lead going in Final. (Interestingly, Finn’s strategy did work out better today for him than what I would have suggested, but just because something worked in this case doesn’t make it the best strategy in general.)
- Kudos to all three players for excellent betting in Final Jeopardy! today.

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:
Katie: Bet between $2,001 and $4,999 (keeping Joel locked out).
Finn: Standard cover bet today is $8,801.
Joel: You’ve got a faint hope, but you need to stay above $2,000. Bet between $0 and $399.

It seems to me that Rachel Carson and/or Silent Spring come up often as clues in Jeopardy.
Finn Corrigan is a fitting name for St Patrick’s Day. Will it bring him luck.
Andy, I thought you didn’t publish the results here until AFTER the normal viewing times in most places. But I’m here on the east coast (South Carolina), reading the results 8 hours before the scheduled prime-time broadcast (7:30 PM) for our area.
The results are liable to be published as soon as they have aired somewhere in the United States—As the “Andy’s Thoughts” section specifies, that was WRDW (Augusta, GA) this morning, who elected to air today’s episode at 10:30 AM Eastern due to March Madness. This policy has not changed; normally, the show airs as early as noon Eastern in two markets, 12:30 PM Eastern in a third, and 1:00 PM Eastern in two further markets.
Thank you for the clarification, Andy. As a relative newcomer to this site, it takes some time to absorb all the details of the rules of publication.
smart thing to do, if you don’t want the results of the episode to be spoiled is to not visit the recap page until after you’ve watched the episode.
I had no idea about yesterday’s FJ, but bounced back today!!
Silent spring seems to be coming up as clues for jeopardy more often now. let’s hope luck will come to him tomorrow if he can continue his winning streak.
Well, I know of the title and Carson… but I’ve never read it and didn’t know what year it was from, so the hint wasn’t going to help 😕
Current FJ streak – 2L
Here locally they so reruns of past games at 1:30. On Amy Schneider’s 32nd game one of the clues pertained to Silent Spring.
“In the dedication to Silent Spring, Rachel Carson wrote, “Man has lost the capacity to foresee and to forestall. He will end by destroying the Earth”. I felt compelled to post it once more.
Considering that Finn Corrigan appeared on the episode that played on St. Patrick’s Day, do you think the producers deliberately chose him for this episode? It seems too coincidental to have just happened.
There were 17 triple stumpers on or about February 24th and 19 triple stumpers on or about March 11th. Today, there were 18 triple stumpers. Does it seem like we are getting more triple stumpers lately or have I just become more aware of them? Is 19 the record for a single game?
Knowing that “Silent Spring” came out in 1962 made today’s FJ fairly easy for me. I was 12 at the time and even at that age (or, maybe, because of that), it made an impression on me.
19 is not the record.
Any idea what the record is? Thanks.
Some might was to check for Jeopardy! on their normal station’s over-the-air 2nd channel. Around here if the “network” station show is preempted, it may be shown at the regular time on the X.2 channel (as in 4.2, 5.2…) over an antenna. And/or it may be shown around 3:00 am on main channel. The problem with either is that your DVR (box or service) will undoubtedly not record at the right time.
I like that you’ve added (or maybe I haven’t noticed?) the categories of the Jeopardy! rounds in your Game Recap. Keep up the good work, Andy (-:
I hope there will be a second chance tournament in May 2022 and not right before the ToC in November 2022.
