Today’s Final Jeopardy – Wednesday, April 20, 2022

Happy Banned Wager Day! Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category On the Internet) for Wednesday, April 20, 2022 (Season 38, Game 158):

This website launched in 2015 with 3 offerings, from James Patterson, Dustin Hoffman & Serena Williams

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Sean Wong, an IT support student from Wayzata, Minnesota
Sean Wong on Jeopardy!
Loni Lewis, a teacher/librarian from Charleston, South Carolina
Loni Lewis on Jeopardy!
Mattea Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (11-day total: $244,882)
Mattea Roach on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Canadian Mattea Roach enters into today’s game with 11 victories and nearly US$250,000 in winnings (her winnings at today’s exchange rate would come out to $306,982.85 Canadian). A win today would have her surpass Jonathan Fisher as the #3 seed for the November Tournament of Champions, and—barring a historic collapse today—she will surpass 300 correct responses early in today’s show.

Chag Pesach Sameach! The Unofficial Jeopardy! Haggadah supplement is available once again to make the Passover Seder for Jeopardy! fans worldwide more engaging.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2022 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

MasterClass was founded in 2015 by David Rogier and Aaron Rasmussen and is an online education website where subscribed students can access pre-recorded tutorials and lectures from experts in wide-ranging fields. The original classes were Dustin Hoffman teaching acting, Serena Williams teaching tennis, and James Patterson teaching writing. One recent MasterClass in the news in some spheres was the March 2022 announcement of Tyler “Ninja” Blevins teaching a MasterClass on how to become a professional Twitch streamer; this class’s content is already becoming panned within the Twitch streaming community.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round: Mattea got off to a strong start in this one, picking up 9 of the first 15 clues! Meanwhile, Loni and Sean both struggled a little bit with incorrect responses. Mattea’s strong play continued with her picking up another 9 after the break, whereas both challengers struggled to get any sort of momentum going.

Double Jeopardy! Round: (I’ve chosen not to include today’s categories out of fear of demonetization over the title of the fourth category in this round.)

Sean got off to a good start, but unfortunately his attempt to catch up to Mattea was derailed by a missed True Daily Double on clue #11. Sean was never able to get back on track after that, and we had the rare occurrence of a single-player Final Jeopardy!—Mattea ended the round at $21,400; Loni had -$600 and Sean -$1,600.

Mattea did get Final correct today and added $5,000 to become a 12-day champion, total winnings $271,282!

Andy, I fully understand and support your decision not to show that category in order not to risk demonetization. One question, though, couldn’t you have achieved the same objective by showing the other categories and just blacking out that one? Just a suggestion in case a similar situation occurs in the future. Thanks for considering.

In my mind, the name MasterClass conjures thoughts of a past attempt to arrange humanity hierarchically as part of a perverse ideology. It’s a nice idea, but they should’ve put more thought into naming their platform . . .

  3. Hi Andy,

Are you going to add Mattea Roach to the Ultra-Champs section later?

    Thanks

  4. I wonder if contestants are able to ask rule questions during the break between rounds. For instance, after DJ, could Mattea have asked what would happen if she were to wager it all and get it wrong and have someone from the crew explain that if that were to happen, she wouldn’t return as defending champ due to not finishing with any money? (given her betting style, I doubt that thought crossed her mind, but still)
