Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, April 5, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Classic Games) for Tuesday, April 5, 2022 (Season 38, Game 147):

Reuben Klamer, who passed away in 2021 at age 99, developed this game relatable to “literally everyone on Earth”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Mattea Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Mattea Roach on Jeopardy!
Kathleen Snyder, a government contractor from Arlington, Virginia
Kathleen Snyder on Jeopardy!
Camron Conners, a high school social studies teacher from Rancho San Margarita, California (1-day total: $24,200)
Camron Conners on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Nell Klugman went from 70% to 46% on buzzer attempts between Friday and Monday—which meant that Camron Conners became the champion! Today sees Kathleen Snyder and Mattea Roach take their turn. One thing I’ve always enjoyed as a Canadian Jeopardy! fan is how Johnny Gilbert announces Canadian contestants; hearing him say Canada in his booming voice is one of my favorite things.

On a more personal note, if you are around overnight tonight (from 2:00am to 8:00am Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, April 6), I am going to be doing a 6-hour charity Twitch stream (on my own channel, twitch.tv/thejeopardyfan), raising money for the MS Society of Canada, as a part of the twice-annual Gamers vs. MS charity stream relay. I recently shaved my beard for my part in this relay, and will only regrow it if “Regrow” earns more money in donations than “No, don’t regrow” does. Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world, with an estimated 1 in every 385 Canadians living with the disease. While it is most often diagnosed in young adults aged 15 to 40, younger children and older adults are also diagnosed with the disease.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Jeopardy! sure has some explaining to do—at least on the web end. Their website is showing Clue of the Day as “20th Century Cinema”, whereas the New York Times print edition shows “Classic Games”.

Meanwhile, in a subject used before in a Jeopardy! context, The Game of Life has had two versions: an original 19th century version, and a 20th century version developed by Reuben Klamer and endorsed by Art Linkletter.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round categories: How Are You Fixed for Blades?; Last Name’s the Same; Instrumental TV Themes; Clear “I”s; Full Arts; Can’t Lose

Kathleen didn’t get in until clue #12 of the round, but she got 3 of the 4 clues before the break in order to jump into a small lead over champion Camron and Canadian challenger Mattea. Coming out of the break, Mattea had a strong performance, picking up 6 correct to take a $2,400 lead, whereas champion Camron struggled, losing $1,000 on a Daily Double and ending the round $1,000 in the red.

Double Jeopardy! Round categories: World Geography; Dogs; Scrambled Novels; Adjectives; Movie Critics; 6 Degrees of Sir Francis Bacon

Camron’s struggles continued in this round, with him only getting in 3 times. He did make Final though. Meanwhile, this turned into a huge battle betwen Kathleen and Mattea. Kathleen bet most of her money at the time on a correct Daily double, whereas Mattea bet very conservatively on theirs (with only 2 clues left). We had a very close game going into Final, with Mattea leading at $18,000, Kathleen at $16,000, and Camron at $2,200.

Final today saw both Kathleen and Mattea get Final—Mattea bet to cover and our new champion is a Canadian! They’ll be back tomorrow in a red blazer to defend their title.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Today’s episode was recorded on January 27, 2022—the show put up a disclaimer due to a clue about Vladimir Putin.
  • For Canadians, $32,001 is enough to pay off student loans—certainly not the case for many Americans.
  • Link to the box score: April 5, 2022 Box Score

Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:
(Scores: Mattea $18,000 Kathleen $16,000 Camron $2,200)

Camron: If Mattea makes the minimum cover bet, you can’t win unless you’re correct (and Kathleen overbets). Bet it all to maximize your winnings in case the miracle hits.

Kathleen: Bet between $4,001 and $11,599 to force Mattea to make a larger bet, still win a Double Stumper with Mattea, and keep Camron locked out.

Mattea: Standard cover bet today is $14,001.

Wow. I feared I had transferred to the Twilight Zone. Thanks for the tip-off, Andy, about the inexplicable category switcheroo.

  2. Michael Johnston | April 5, 2022 at 2:00 pm |

    That’s okay… I didn’t know this one either :/

    Current FJ streak: still 3L

  3. Played the Game of Life growing up so this was easy for me. And pretty much every family could afford that game, unlike the premium television channel needed to answer yesterday’s FJ.

    • I played it once or twice with a friend’s family — it was their favorite game but felt boring to me, so not a game that comes to mind.

Keeping in mind that I cannot actually watch Jeopardy! anymore (since moving) and just go to this website to “get my Jeopardy! fix”, I think it is funny that one of the DJ categories was ‘6 Degrees of Sir Francis Bacon’ because the only “game” I could think of that is “relatable to literally everyone on Earth” was “6 Degrees of Separation”.

BTW, who/what was Jeopardy! quoting about that game being relatable to “literally everyone on Earth”? It has been over 50 years since I played it, but I can’t imagine the game I played being relatable to Laplanders or Shudras and Dalits in India or most residents of Burundi. Is this an example of First World Privilege thinking?

      • Zach Hicks | April 5, 2022 at 6:16 pm |

The creator said life was the only thing everyone experienced, so The Game of Life is relatable to every single person.

        • That is true about “life” itself, but not about all aspects of his game.

          • Especially since the game was essentially restricted to people living in North America . . .

          • Lone Biker Of The Apacolypse | April 6, 2022 at 12:59 pm |

It’s in the title of the game, as quoted by the inventor of the game, when he invented the game. Don’t read to much into it.

    • I knew the answer to yesterday’s FJ without ever having watched that show, so a subscription to HBO or whatever was NOT needed.
Besides, I bet buying a copy of the Game of Life costs more than a month’s subscription to HBO

  4. While Mattea is said to be from Toronto, I believe that she has strong ties to Cape Breton – Down With The Causeway!!!!

    https://halifax.citynews.ca/local-news/nova-scotia-native-to-compete-on-jeopardy-tuesday-5232767

  5. I got the answer with a second to spare when I kept asking myself why they so deliberately included when he died and at what age. It had to be relevant to figuring it out.

If Mattea loses tomorrow, I’m going to wonder if there’s issues with the champion’s lectern. Nell and Camron both went from dominant in the the third lectern to struggling in the first. If Mattea has the same thing happen, that’s enough evidence for me.

  6. Zach Hicks | April 5, 2022 at 6:18 pm |

The producers may have a talk with Mattea about talking over the host.

  7. Pizza Face Fred | April 5, 2022 at 11:30 pm |

Everyone was playing Risk and Life back when I was short in the tooth. Thought both would make good choices . . .

  8. Wow, they actually had challengers named Kathy and Mattea.

(For Final Jeopardy, all I could come up with was Solitaire.)
