Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, April 8, 2022

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 19th Century Literature) for Friday, April 8, 2022 (Season 38, Game 150):

The Strand Union Workhouse, whose rules prohibited second helpings of food, inspired a setting in this 1838 novel

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s contestants:

Abigail Davis, a college administrator from Clarkesville, Georgia
Abigail Davis on Jeopardy!
Tom Nucum, a real estate agent from Baltimore, Maryland
Tom Nucum on Jeopardy!
Mattea Roach, a tutor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (3-day total: $80,400)
Mattea Roach on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Canadian Mattea Roach won her third game on yesterday’s show—both her attempt numbers and her buzzer percentage were down slightly from her first two games. Whether she’s starting to tire or if the material just didn’t hit her is still to be seen, but Tom and Abigail would definitely like Mattea’s win streak to end at 3 games!

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Oliver Twist is a famous novel by British author Charles Dickens, about an orphaned young boy growing up in a workhouse. A famous passage from the work was Oliver, at dinner of one night, going and asking, “Please, sir, I want some more”, asking for more gruel and standing up to the starvation rations at the workhouse.

Game Recap:

Jeopardy! Round categories: Television; Multiple Meanings; Potpourri; Pulitzer-Winning Characters; Bean There; Done That

For the third game in a row, Mattea had the best time of it in the opening 15 clues, picking up 6 correct over the break (and a seventh clue where both Abigail and Tom were incorrect). Mattea’s strong play continued after the break and her lead was made even larger when Abigail was definitely thinking “David ****ing Mamet” after missing a True Daily Double about Glengarry Glen Ross. Mattea’s lead was $7,400-$200 (Tom)-$0 (Abigail) after Single Jeopardy.

Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Ain’t No Century Like the 17th Century; What Kind of Place Is This?; Norse Mythology; Writing — It’s a Living; R&B Music; “Em”power

Mattea picked up another 16 correct (31 total between Single and Double) to dominate proceedings again; even dropping $2,000 on a Daily Double didn’t faze here. Meanwhile, Tom found Daily Double #3 and dropped to $0 himself. Thankfully, we got to see three players in Final — the scores going into Final were Mattea at $22,200, Abigail at $3,600, and Tom at $400.

Today’s Final Jeopardy! was a triple get—Mattea picked up another $2,000 to become the first Canadian player to win at least $100,000 in regular play on Jeopardy! She’ll go for win #5 on Monday as Ken Jennings hosts!

  1. Got the last two FJ this week, making for a happy start to the weekend. May I have some more?

  2. Please, sir, may I have some more, please.

Well, took me until Friday to get FJ. Now I can go into the weekend with a smile. Here’s good wishes for a long Mattea run. I think the audience is ready for it as is Mattea.

  4. I’m enjoying Mattea’s enthusiasm and genuineness. I also think it’s time to put a lid on shout-outs once and for all.

    • Shout-outs would be effectively dealt with if they ruled that spurious writing on the FJ screen could invalidate a correct answer. Only people with no answer would be tempted to do a shout-out, and who cares then? Just ignore it and don’t even acknowledge it. Problem solved well enough, IMNSHO.

    • shout-outs don’t hurt anyone.
heaven forbid contestants try to have some FUN playing a game.

  5. For some reason I thought Oliver Twist was written in like 1850. And then there’s the fact that I haven’t read it since the sixth grade – over two decades ago! I don’t think 12 y/o kids are an old enough audience for Dickens, honestly, because I can’t recall any of it (and I’m usually good with that kind of thing). So yeah, I missed this one, but I got things like Yggdrassil so I’m okay with that.

My parents took me to see the musical “Oliver!” on Broadway in the 1960’s. I’ve remembered that famous line ever since so this FJ was a piece of cake (slight pun).

So does Mattea get Canadian dollars or US dollars? Her winnings would sound like even more in Canadian dollars. Also, does she get hit with income taxes in the US, Canada and California? Everybody wants their cut. 🙁

    • Erika Casupanan won Survivor last year and, as a Canadian citizen, did not have to pay any income tax (as far as I know). The cheque was for US dollars, same as anyone.

I would presume it’s a similar case here.

    • My aunt took me and her son (both “older” teens) to see Oliver! at the movie theater and she was shocked when Bill Sikes told Nancy “Of course I love you, I sleep with you, don’t I?”

  7. Michael Johnston | April 8, 2022 at 10:03 pm |

I’m hoping for Mattea to break through the 4-win wall on Monday!
