Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Disney Songs) for Friday, September 16, 2022 (Season 39, Game 5):
“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto is the first song from an animated Disney film to hit No. 1 since this duet in 1993
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Emmett Stanton, a freelance writer from Baltimore, Maryland![]() |
Melissa Woodall, a homemaker from Fort Smith, Arkansas![]() |
Luigi de Guzman, an attorney from Arlington, Virginia (5-day total: $140,700)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Much like the beginning of Season 38, the beginning of Season 39 of Jeopardy! has a very strong champion at the champion’s lectern. Instead of Matt Amodio, though, our champion is Luigi de Guzman. Luigi has been averaging 49.6 buzzer attempts per game over his first five games (last season’s average was 33.) With that sort of consistency—even Amy Schneider was only averaging 45.5 attempts per game at the end of her run—Luigi is going to be an incredibly difficult player to defeat. Luigi has made some games close, though, due to missing Daily Doubles or his opponents getting the hang of the signaling device—remember, if you don’t have a runaway, you’re always in jeopardy of losing on the game’s final clue!
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

“A Whole New World”, sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, was from the early-’90s Disney animated smash hit Aladdin, and went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week in March 1993. Interestingly, “All for Love” from The Three Musketeers went to #1 in 1994; of course, The Three Musketeers was live-action, and definitely not animated.

It was Emmett who got off to an absolute rocket start in today’s Jeopardy! round, but he made a very conservative Daily Double bet, leaving $2,600 on the table, only betting $1,000 of his $3,600. He did have a big lead after the Jeopardy! round.

Emmett 10 correct 0 incorrect
Luigi 2 correct 0 incorrect
Melissa 1 correct 0 incorrect
Statistics after the Jeopardy round:
Emmett 14 correct 1 incorrect

Double Jeopardy! Round:
(Categories: British Literature; Magnets!; Think Fast; Television; Explorers; Beyond The Pale)
Luigi came back like gangbusters in Double Jeopardy! today, even though he split the Daily Doubles. The $2,600 that Emmett left on the table in the opening round would have come in handy here, as he was $2,200 off the lead going into Final! Scores going into clue #61 were Luigi at $18,000, Emmett at $15,800, and Melissa at $2,800!
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Luigi 26 correct 5 incorrect
Emmett 22 correct 2 incorrect
Melissa 7 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 4 (0 today).
Both Luigi and Emmett got Final Jeopardy! correct, but for the second time this week, the leader going into Final didn’t win, as Luigi’s gambit hoping that Emmett wouldn’t get Final correct didn’t work out—Emmett bet $10,000 and is the Jeopardy! champion going into the weekend! He’ll be back on Monday to defend!

Today’s interviews:
Emmett tries to take the train whenever possible when traveling in the US.
Melissa was in a punk metal band.
Luigi hopes to visit friends with his winnings.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Jeopardy! would be considerably more boring if contestants always made the standard cover bet from the lead. Shaming contestants who choose not to do so is completely inappropriate fan behavior.
- Today’s box score: September 16, 2022 Box Score
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Luigi $18,000 Emmett $15,800 Melissa $2,800)
Luigi: Standard cover bet over Emmett is $13,601. (Actual bet: $1,551)
Melissa: If Luigi bets to cover and is incorrect, he falls to $4,399. Thus, you should bet at least $1,600. (Actual bet: $2,799)
Emmett: Betting between $4,400 (therefore covering any of Luigi’s small range) and $10,199 gives you the best chance of winning while guaranteeing second place if you’re incorrect. (Actual bet: $10,000)

What was kens remark after the first round today? Thanks
He was asking if Luigi had met his Waluigi; Luigi and Waluigi are both the names of characters in the Nintendo universe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waluigi
Low number of Triple Stumpers in games of Luigi’s reign. I think we have an imposter in our midst. Can you figure out who?
How does the box score have Luigi with 29 buzzer attempts in Double Jeopardy? Isn’t 28 the theoretical maximum? Or do they count finding a Daily Double as a buzzer attempt?
rebound opportunities after someone else responded incorrectly?
That’s what I thought at first, but their explainer says they count at most one attempt per clue.
‘A Whole New World’ also claims the distinction of replacing another noteworthy movie song from the #1 spot on the Bb Hot 100, ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney Houston from ‘The Bodyguard’ which had been at the top the previous 14 weeks. Oh and Melissa’s guess of ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ peaked at #4 in 1994.
I understand evaluating the category and choosing to bet conservatively, but I think that the question difficulty does not correlate very well with the category. Luigi was a strong player, as his performance in the last two days’ double jeopardy showed. He bet for a triple stumper, which is less likely than the second strongest player knowing the answer. I don’t know that those statistics exist, but it would be an interesting comparison. Either way, Luigi was a pretty good 5 time champion. I’m sorry to see him go.
Actually it didn’t need to be a triple stumper – any scenario where Emmett misses Luigi would win with his bet (since Melissa couldn’t catch up to Luigi’s bet).
