Much like the beginning of Season 38, the beginning of Season 39 of Jeopardy! has a very strong champion at the champion’s lectern. Instead of Matt Amodio, though, our champion is Luigi de Guzman. Luigi has been averaging 49.6 buzzer attempts per game over his first five games (last season’s average was 33.) With that sort of consistency—even Amy Schneider was only averaging 45.5 attempts per game at the end of her run—Luigi is going to be an incredibly difficult player to defeat. Luigi has made some games close, though, due to missing Daily Doubles or his opponents getting the hang of the signaling device—remember, if you don’t have a runaway, you’re always in jeopardy of losing on the game’s final clue!

“A Whole New World”, sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, was from the early-’90s Disney animated smash hit Aladdin, and went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week in March 1993. Interestingly, “All for Love” from The Three Musketeers went to #1 in 1994; of course, The Three Musketeers was live-action, and definitely not animated.

It was Emmett who got off to an absolute rocket start in today’s Jeopardy! round, but he made a very conservative Daily Double bet, leaving $2,600 on the table, only betting $1,000 of his $3,600. He did have a big lead after the Jeopardy! round.

- Jeopardy! would be considerably more boring if contestants always made the standard cover bet from the lead. Shaming contestants who choose not to do so is completely inappropriate fan behavior.

Low number of Triple Stumpers in games of Luigi’s reign. I think we have an imposter in our midst. Can you figure out who?
How does the box score have Luigi with 29 buzzer attempts in Double Jeopardy? Isn’t 28 the theoretical maximum? Or do they count finding a Daily Double as a buzzer attempt?

That’s what I thought at first, but their explainer says they count at most one attempt per clue.
‘A Whole New World’ also claims the distinction of replacing another noteworthy movie song from the #1 spot on the Bb Hot 100, ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney Houston from ‘The Bodyguard’ which had been at the top the previous 14 weeks. Oh and Melissa’s guess of ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’ peaked at #4 in 1994.
I understand evaluating the category and choosing to bet conservatively, but I think that the question difficulty does not correlate very well with the category. Luigi was a strong player, as his performance in the last two days’ double jeopardy showed. He bet for a triple stumper, which is less likely than the second strongest player knowing the answer. I don’t know that those statistics exist, but it would be an interesting comparison. Either way, Luigi was a pretty good 5 time champion. I’m sorry to see him go.
Actually it didn’t need to be a triple stumper – any scenario where Emmett misses Luigi would win with his bet (since Melissa couldn’t catch up to Luigi’s bet).
