Monday sees the start of the first-ever Jeopardy! Second Chance Tournament! 18 players have been invited back for a second chance to be a Jeopardy! champion—the players have been split into two weeks of 9 players, with each week’s overall winner getting the last two spots in the Tournament of Champions.
Here’s the Week 1 preview:
Monday, October 17, 2022:
![]() Cindy Zhang New York, New York 22 correct, 2 incorrect 0/0 on rebound attempts (on 4 rebound opportunities) 39.29% in first on buzzer (22/56) 1/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $3,000) 1/1 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $13,600 |
![]() Aaron Gulyas Grand Blanc, Michigan 24 correct, 5 incorrect 0/2 on rebound attempts (on 3 rebound opportunities) 42.11% in first on buzzer (24/57) 1/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $1,000) 0/1 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $15,000 |
![]() Jessica Stephens Nashville, Tennessee 15 correct, 0 incorrect 1/1 on rebound attempts (on 5 rebound opportunities) 22.81% in first on buzzer (13/57) 0/0 on Daily Doubles 1/1 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $14,400 |
Andy’s Preview Thoughts: One thing that you’re going to see a lot of in my previews is that I think this is going to be a generally close tournament. Cindy was barely behind going into Final Jeopardy over Sri Kompella, Aaron Gulyas came within a Final Jeopardy! of taking down Ryan Long, and Jessica was the third player in the famous Matt Amodio–Jonathan Fisher match that inspired this tournament in the first place. It’s also going to be very difficult to judge how well someone like Jessica is going to play. I suspect that she will outplay her past performance, considering that her opposition in her initial game combined for 49 victories. |
Tuesday, October 18, 2022:
![]() Erica Weiner-Amachi Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 20 correct, 5 incorrect 2/2 on rebound attempts (on 5 rebound opportunities) 36.21% in first on buzzer (21/58) 1/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $600) 1/1 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $11,600 |
![]() Tracy Pitzel Ellensberg, Washington 20 correct, 3 incorrect 1/1 on rebound attempts (on 4 rebound opportunities) 35.09% in first on buzzer (20/57) 0/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$1,000) 0/1 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $18,000 |
![]() Molly Karol Austin, Texas 21 correct, 5 incorrect 3/4 on rebound attempts (on 6 rebound opportunities) 35.09% in first on buzzer (20/57) 1/1 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $7,000) 1/1 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $9,800 |
Andy’s Preview Thoughts: This semifinal has three significantly different paths to this tournament—Tracy gave Matt Amodio a strong run, including 20 correct and an $18,000 Coryat; Erica barely lost in a tiebreaker and was elevated into the tournament from alternate status after Isaac Applebaum was unable to play, and Molly rode a $7,000 Daily Double to putting Andrew He in a lock-tie situation. In my opinion, I think Tracy is probably the strongest of the three players in this game, but it could really go any way. |
Wednesday, October 19, 2022:
![]() James Fraser Newport Beach, California 22 correct, 4 incorrect 0/1 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities) 43.64% in first on buzzer (24/55) 0/0 on Daily Doubles 0/1 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $17,400 |
![]() Renée Russell Baltimore, Maryland 17 correct, 1 incorrect 1/1 on rebound attempts (on 3 rebound opportunities) 24.56% in first on buzzer (14/57) 2/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $7,000) 0/1 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $15,000 |
![]() Pam Schoenberg South Salem, New York 24 correct, 2 incorrect 1/1 on rebound attempts (on 2 rebound opportunities) 38.60% in first on buzzer (22/57) 1/2 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: -$400) 0/1 in Final Jeopardy Average Coryat: $18,000 |
Andy’s Preview Thoughts: A lot of people are predicting Pam Schoenberg to win this entire week, but she’ll have to get through this semifinal first. Pam nearly took down Amy Schneider in Amy’s 10th game, holding a big lead after the opening round. However, Renée gave Mattea Roach a very strong run and James was very strong on the buzzer, coming within a Final Jeopardy! of being champion himself! Again, I really think that all three of these games will be incredibly close. |
