Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Artists) for Friday, October 28, 2022 (Season 39, Game 35):
Sabena Airlines commissioned a painting by this artist, “L’Oiseau de Ciel”, a bird whose body is filled with clouds in a blue sky
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Sadie Goldberger, an interpreter from Columbia, Maryland (Yesterday’s total: $4,800)![]() |
Jack Weller, a law student originally from San Diego, California (Yesterday’s total: $3,400)![]() |
Rowan Ward, a chart caller, writer & editor from Chicago, Illinois (Yesterday’s total: $30,000)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After one of the most impressive Jeopardy! performances of all time, rowan holds a commanding advantage after Game 1 of the final. However, the lead is not insurmountable — absolutely anything can happen! Today’s winner will be seen again next Thursday in the fourth quarterfinal of the Tournament of Champions, against Courtney Shah and John Focht!
One important note for fans living in the Denver television market: On days where FOX is broadcasting the World Series—which could be as many as five times between tonight and the end of next week (Oct. 28, Oct. 31, Nov. 1, Nov. 2, Nov. 4)—the show will be aired on KWGN (CW, Channel 2) instead of the usual KDVR (FOX, Channel 31). Kudos to KDVR, though—many other FOX affiliates are not as lucky. It makes me glad that Jeopardy! refused to sell the rights to a number of other FOX affiliates a few years ago.
On a more personal note, it is the time of year for the twice-yearly Gamers vs. MS 168-hour online fundraiser! 24 different Twitch streamers will be live between 8 AM Eastern on October 22 and 8 AM Eastern on October 29, raising money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Canada has one of the world’s highest rates of multiple sclerosis (MS), with an estimated 1 in every 385 Canadians living with the disease. Thus far, the entire relay has now raised over $10,000! You can find more information about this fall’s relay at gamersvsms.ca.
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

In the 20th century, Sabena served as the national airline of Belgium, and they commissioned famed Belgian artist René Magritte for “L’Oiseau de Ciel”. After being taken over by Swissair a few years prior, the airline declared bankruptcy in 2001, much to the consternation of the Belgian government. However, the sale of “L’Oiseau de Ciel” for €3.4 million in 2003 was incredibly helpful for former staff, as it meant the 12,000 former employees were able to be paid what was owed to them. As of 2022, Brussels Airlines is Belgium’s current flag carrier.

As someone who came of age in the 1970s, I was for some reason quite familiar with Magritte. Had never seen the painting mentioned in the clue, but a number of his paintings have “holes” in a foreground object or person, through which sky and clouds show through from the background. I got it immediately, and was incredulous that none of the contestants did. I didn’t realize he was Belgian, but it was not a leap, with his having a French name, to imagine that he was.
great game!
