Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, December 19, 2022

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the December 19, 2022, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Brand Names) for Monday, December 19, 2022 (Season 39, Game 71):

Unable to make these candies perfectly round, the confectioner embraced this flawed name for the product

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Miranda Onnen, an assistant Attorney General from Astoria, New York
Miranda Onnen on Jeopardy!
Andrew Schmidt, an automotive marketing consultant from Roswell, Georgia
Andrew Schmidt on Jeopardy!
Ray Lalonde, a scenic artist from Toronto, Ontario, Canada (2-day total: $60,600)
Ray Lalonde on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

It’s time for a new week on Jeopardy!, and your returning champion is Ray Lalonde. He’s won two games and over $60,000 at this point. How long into the new week will his streak last?

A couple of notes regarding today’s game: Today is a travel day for me—assuming the weather doesn’t turn any worse here—thus, there might be delays in terms of results and statistics. The second important note is that I am taking a Twitter break. I no longer wish to provide content for a website run by its current ownership, as I believe the website is turning into a cesspool of hate—with the current leadership enthusiastically joining in the bullying and hatred. I hope that Jeopardy! itself chooses to follow suit in the near future.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

According to the current owners of the brand—Hershey—Milk Duds were introduced in the late 1920s; the brand got its name because F. Hoffman & Co. of Chicago, the initial manufacturer, were unable to get the chocolate-covered caramels completely round. Thus, they were called “duds”, and the brand name Milk Duds took off.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Ken’s going “It’ll come down to the wager” at the end is a nice throwback to what Alex did, especially in the late ’80s. (Can you tell I’ve been watching a lot of old episodes recently?)
  • Today’s box score: December 19, 2022 Box Score.

21 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, December 19, 2022"

  1. Tootsie Roll was the only thing I could think of. Doh!

    • Michael Johnston | December 19, 2022 at 11:02 am |

Not an unreasonable guess. I was stumped and guessed Life Savers even though I was sure it was wrong (because they have, IME, always been perfectly round). I used to love Milk Duds when I was a kid😋

      Current FJ streak: 1L

  2. Andy – a question on a different topic. Do you have a preference on where the “Jeopardy Twitter” should migrate, if at all? I (and many others) are stuck on Twitter following Jeopardy and talking about it.

  3. Marvin Gregory “Greg” Fuller | December 19, 2022 at 11:33 am |

Guessed Hershey kisses. Loved milk duds mixed with popcorn at the movies.

  4. I don’t really like milk duds but I like Tootsie Rolls better because it does not stick to your teeth. I would avoid the milk duds.

  5. I guessed goobers because a goober certainly sounds flawed and they aren’t round but milk dud makes much more sense

  6. Andy, I listen to old episodes all the time and Ken’s game phrasing and repartee with contestants is very similar to Alex.

    • Bill Vollmer | December 21, 2022 at 6:08 pm |

If Ken wants pointers on how to act as host of Jeopardy, what better way to find them by watching Alex. But I hope as he becomes more and more comfortable as the host of Jeopardy, he developes his own style.
I imagine Alex at one point watched Art Flemming, but except for some possible phrasing, did it his way.

  7. Debbie Stover | December 19, 2022 at 4:59 pm |

    Good call on Twitter, Andy.

  8. I threw Rolo out there because I couldn’t think of anything. Not really a Milk Duds guy so that’s probably why I couldn’t think of it in 30 seconds!

As for Twitter… I’ve thought it’s been toxic for quite some time now, long before the all-consuming musky stench overtook it. Ownership being involved in the hivemind has made it even worse, though the same was true of Facebook a couple years ago. They’ve since rectified that.

  9. Andy, do they possibly not have Milk Duds in Canada? Gummy bears do not seem to make any sense as a choice. I really did not think Hershey’s Kisses were correct, but it is all I could think of — maybe because I have never liked Milk Duds — and it is hard for me to see why anyone wouldn’t think of and try putting Kisses rather than gummy bears.

Had the clue said the confectioner was trying to make them “spherical” rather than “round”, I would have guessed Junior Mints even though the name wouldn’t seem to imply “flawed”.

  10. Robert Fawkes | December 19, 2022 at 7:20 pm |

The key to final Jeopardy was the word “flawed.” A dud is certainly something that is flawed. Aside from that, this was easy because Milk Duds were the favorite of one of my kids.

On a separate note, hasn’t Twitter always been a cesspool of sorts?

Would Reddit provide a good alternative for those seeking someplace to migrate? Just asking as I’m not too familiar with that site either.

  11. My first thought was Mounds! Obviously wrong 🙁

  12. Well done and kudos for your twitter stand. Continue to encourage others to follow your lead.
