Imagine the alternate universe where Sergio Leone directed Laurence Olivier in The Godfather. It was Leone who turned down the directorial role that eventually went to Francis Ford Coppola, Leone preferring to direct what eventually became Once Upon A Time in America, which was released over a decade later. Meanwhile, the studio pretty much wanted “anyone but [Marlon] Brando” to portray Don Corleone, but they eventually relented. The Godfather became one of the most iconic films of all time.

Today’s interviews:
Lois is a huge fan of “To Kill A Mockingbird”.
Patrick had a rap dedicated to him—by Debbie Reynolds.
Lloyd covers his apartment walls with photos.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- This is the first regular-play game since July 13 where a player has failed to reach Final Jeopardy!, ending a streak of 69 straight regular-play games of 3-player Finals. This is not the longest streak of the post-Trebek era; the post-Trebek era began with 72 consecutive regular-play 3-player Finals, and the longest streak since 2004 was 88 consecutive regular-play games, between October 3, 2017, and February 19, 2018.
- Kudos to all three players for the Daily Double hunting today.
- Today’s box score: January 5, 2023 Box Score.

Apparently Colby Burnett is getting his own category on the Celebrity show tonight, so that’s pretty cool!
Something to look forward to! He was always one of my personal favorite super champions.
Colby was never a super champion, though—he came from a tournament.
Blarg – of course you’re right. I keep misremembering that he came from the regular show rather than from the Teachers Tournament.
He won both the ToC and Teachers Tournament, BTW.
Andy! I am pretty new to this site and really love it.
Question – when will the recent superchamps final winnings be posted
I think it was over 380K? Thanks
Hello, welcome! So, his final daily running stats would have been posted on the January 3 game post (LINK).
His super-champion statistics post is coming Soon™.
Andy!
Thanks for the warm welcome.
I was referring to the lists on this site under the blue rectangle that says ‘All time Jeopardy! Winnings’…
Ray is listed @ $350K not $380K.
I am not sure if I am misunderstanding something hete.
Apologies for my confusion—I thought I had updated it!
Thanks for the reminder.
winning both tournaments meant winning 6-8 games (depending on how you want to count the “two-day total point affair” finals), which is pretty close to a “super champion”
I guessed The Godfather just based on the year but I was so sure it was going to be wrong! Imagine my surprise🤦 Still trying to wrap my head around the names considered?
Fun personal trivia – I’ve never actually seen any of that film series and what I know about them is just from hearsay 🙂
I should have gotten it (but didn’t) based on Sergio Leone being Italian. I picked the wrong 1972 Marlon Brando film. Last Tango in Paris.
If you’re curious about those movies, you can find snippets of them on YouTube.
I hadn’t seen any of them when NETFLIX first came out as a DVD by mail service. I got the DVDs and binge watched waiting for certain famous quotes as well as the horse’s head.
I still shudder over the horse’s head scene
I was off by some years and I know nothing ab0ut Sergio Leone so I guessed “Marty.” Excellent film.
Hah! “So… What do you feel like doin’ tonight?” 😀
Easy get! Once I did the quick math and landed at the year 1972, it fell right into my lap.
The godfather will always be my favorite film as this was pretty easy. Loved the Italian accent from Sergio Leone, especially Marlon Brando in that film.
What does Sergio Leone’s Italian accent have to do with ‘The Godfather’ or Marlon Brando? Sergio Leone turned down the directing job for that film, so why would he take a job as the dialect coach?
Thanks for raising that question, Lisa. I was, and still am, very perplexed by Lou’s comment.
Because I like this film so much, my blind guess based on the category was “The Godfather.” Of course, it didn’t hurt that we also just celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. I saw “The Godfather” during its original first run in 1972.
Maybe Lou is getting the character “Sonny Corleone” mixed up with Sergio Leone. Or possibly confusing the person Sergio Leone with the ‘Godfather’ actor Vito Scotti (who was an actual Italian FROM Italy, not just of Italian heritage).
This was easy. Those names and 1972 were all I needed. I’m not going to let that jerk on YouTube get to me!
Also excited for a Colby Burnett category! He was always fun to watch (including on King of the Nerds).
On Patrick’s Daily Double in Double Jeopardy, I believe the host should’ve asked Patrick to be more specific. Earl Long, Huey’s younger brother, was also governor of Louisiana.
Mark from Louisiana
Your request is the same as asking people to prompt for a first name on Michael Schumacher because of his lesser-known brother Ralf.
Not gonna happen.
Earl K. Long, affectionately known as “Uncle Earl”, was indeed “larger than life”, and was just as well known on a national level as his older brother Huey.
If there was a call for a “more specific” prompt today, it was on the Sutherland clue.
I agree.
Okay… but how many people can say they’ve had a Jeopardy! category in their name. Today was a fantastic day to watch Jeopardy!
Congratulations! 👍 I can imagine it would be a real feather in your cap!
Where can I find the link for the Debbie Reynolds rap dedicated to Patrick? Can I at least know what the song was called?
Considering how old Patrick looks, this happened 20 years ago—at least—if not 30. I would be shocked if video of it even existed.
I was curious about Patrick’s pronunciation of “Gaullaudet” University. It sounded to me like he said “Gall-ee-au-det.” Is that close enough for the judges?
I don’t know if there is an official policy, but my sense from watching is that the judges are generally extremely lenient when it comes to vowel sounds, especially for hard to pronounce or commonly mispronounced names — which Gallaudet is:
