Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The 2022–2023 Celebrity Jeopardy! tournament continues tonight! For those of you who need a refresher: Ike Barinholtz and Wil Wheaton have already booked their ticket to the February 2 million-dollar final, as this week begins the third set of quarterfinals! Today’s game features Zoë Chao, Brianne Howey, and Michael Cera. None of the three players have any past Jeopardy! experience; I feel like tonight’s game might be very evenly-matched!

Also, reports are that Jeopardy! All-Star Colby Burnett will be presenting a category during tonight’s game.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

I was impressed by how well the players started this game, nothing wrong with going top-to-bottom to get your feet wet! Michael had the best time of things in the first 15 clues to take an early lead. Coming out of the first break, Michael got the first Daily Double incorrect, but still led after 30.

Double Jeopardy! started well for Michael and Zoe, but Brianne had a couple of incorrect responses to put her into the red at the midway point of the game. Michael got to—and was conservative on—both Daily Doubles, and had a bit of a lead at the two-thirds mark.

Michael 17 correct 2 incorrect
Zoë 10 correct 0 incorrect
Brianne 4 correct 2 incorrect

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Triple Jeopardy! Round:

Triple Jeopardy! was just about all Michael; he got to all three Daily Doubles, including the last one on clue #30 to cement his runaway! Scores going into Final were Michael at $20,000, Zoë at $6,300 and Brianne at $2,700. And, “They Were Teachers” was presented by Colby Burnett!

10 Comments on "Celebrity Jeopardy! Game Recap – Thursday, January 5, 2023"

  1. No matter who gets the third spot in the finals, I’m sure of one thing –

An Ike Barinholtz / Wil Wheaton matchup is 100% gonna be a doozy.

  2. Wonder who’s the next guest to deliver clues? I’m anxious there isn’t any.

  3. Because I thought I remembered there were quite a few episodes left, I thought for a second that Andy was saying that in February some celebrity was going to win $2,000,000!

  4. I realize that I am older than these contestants, but it is hard for me to imagine anyone not GUESSING ‘Albert Einstein’ even if they didn’t KNOW that was who had been named by TIME Magazine. I am guessing that “lay” contestants get too focused on the exact clue — TIME Magazine naming a Person of the Century in 1999 — and don’t just think “who is the smartest person I’ve ever heard of?”

But I think Hawking was a good guess since a decision by TIME would be subjective and the magazine might weigh some intellectual aspects over others that perhaps the average person would not. (Or TIME could have ruled out Einstein because he was BORN in the 19th century.)

To me, all three players in this Celebrity Jeopardy game seemed nervous unsure of themselves though most of the Jeopady round. But entering Double Jeopardy it seemed like their competitive juices were unlocked.
As for this game’s Final Jeopardy, it as another where I heard, and, read the clue, shrugged, abd, guessed, correctly, There are many smart people, Einstein. for whatever eason was the one who camw to my mind.

    • That kind of goes along with my comment “it is hard for me to imagine anyone not GUESSING ‘Albert Einstein’”. If it were a different clue with that statement from TIME but NOT mentioning “Person of the Century”, perhaps Hawking or Turing or Newton or Da Vinci would come to mind, but I think I probably still would have said Einstein.

Any idea who Zoë might have been thinking of when she started with “Bi”?
