Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Art Exhibitions) for Wednesday, March 15, 2023 (Season 39, Game 133):
In 1898 what’s been called the first blockbuster art show was devoted to him & put on for Queen Wilhelmina’s coronation
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Govind Dandekar, a solutions architect from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada![]() |
Gwen Lockman, a Ph.D candidate from Missoula, Montana![]() |
Stephen Webb, a data scientist from Longmont, Colorado (6-day total: $155,281)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Stephen Webb is now a 6-day champion, with winnings over $150,000, after his second victory in a row in which he did not find a Daily Double! Stephen is definitely consistent, though, but will a challenger be able to put everything together and defeat him? Gwen and Govind certainly hope so!

Known as the “Rembrandt tentoonstelling” and held at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, it showcased over 100 paintings and over 350 drawings of Rembrandt. Even The Nightwatch was transported across the Museumplein from the Rijksmuseum. According to Hofstede de Groot, “The Dutch could have paid no nobler homage to their young Queen and her coronation, than by bringing together a collection of the masterpieces of the greatest painter to whom Holland has given birth.”

Dang… another tricksy one that I got misdirected on. Knowing nothing of the historical details, I made the assumption that the art show was devoted to someone living 🙁
Current FJ streak: 1L
Lucky guess for me, but a lucky guess is still a correct answer and I’ll take it.
Same here, though a slightly educated lucky guess since I was pretty sure that Wilhelmina was queen of either Denmark or Holland (with a very slight chance it was Norway, Sweden, or Finland), so knowing Rembrandt and Vermeer as “Dutch Masters”, I went with Rembrandt. To just be guessing, Van Gogh was probably as good a guess since he had just died in 1890, but lucky for me I never think of him as Dutch (probably because he painted his best known paintings in France). Munch wasn’t Dutch, he was Norwegian.
I first thought of Vermeer, and then Rembrandt! Hard to make a choice, but luckily I chose Rembrandt!
A rare case where just the first name will be an acceptable answer.
LOL
Here is the way I calculated it:
Queen Wilhemina = Holland
Holland = Dutch
Dutch = Dutch Masters
Dutch Masters (to me, who knows about 10 artists in total) = Rembrandt (because I saw The Night Watch in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in 1977) 🙂 🙂
Got it wrong, but I should be comforted that I had the same guess as the champion. I was thinking Norway.
Whenever I think of Dutch Masters, Rembrandt is the first one to come to mind. So, that was my choice.
I must not have understood the question about the sign after Scorpio cause he answered Taurus and Ken accepted it. Sagittarius is the sign after Scorpio.
