This game’s Jeopardy! Masters contestants:
Amy Schneider, a writer from Oakland, California (4 points)![]() |
Matt Amodio, a postdoctoral researcher from Cambridge, Massachusetts (6 points)![]() |
James Holzhauer, a self-described game show villain from Las Vegas, Nevada (12 points)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Last night, Amy Schneider made—if you’ll pardon the comparison to the other Masters—the Jeopardy! equivalent of three-putting from inside of ten feet when her too-small Final Jeopardy! bet handed victory over to Matt Amodio. Now that she’s been paired with James and Matt, Amy’s chances of making the semifinals will be that much more difficult. It’s unfortunate—Amy has a lot of people cheering for her, and if she’d taken the constructive criticism written about her after her initial games and focused on improving her wagering strategy, she’d be in a much better tournament position right now; as it stands now, a third place finish from Amy tonight would see her fail to qualify for the semifinals. On the flip side, James has already clinched his spot in the semifinals.

Tomorrow:
Mattea-Matt-Sam
James-Andrew-Amy
Down to Matt and Amy for the fourth and final semifinal place. Matt clinches it if he wins; if not, Amy has to win to go through.
Given Mattea’s dominance throughout this tournament with the copious amount of wins they have, I really predict tomorrow will be Mattea’s day.
James final jeopardy response got a chuckle out of me. I know when he put that he was referring to Ken. I think at this point we need a one on one game between the 2. I know I’d love to see it.
After 6 nights (and 12 games) watching these players, I think we can conclude 3 things:
1)James is the best player
2)Andrew is the second best player
3)Third is a crapshoot between the streakers of last season (Matt, Mattea, Amy).
What’s really interesting is that Sam is 3rd in total correct in this tournament. It’s tactical errors and poorly timed wrong answers holding him back, maybe he was pressing. Perhaps the benefit of being the token old guy to get some the younger players wouldn’t know.
Sam is not a token old guy. He earned the right to be in this tournament. You even say that he is third in correct answers.
“Only” may have been a better choice of words than “token”, though I don’t want to put words in Ben’s mouth (comment?).
Amy needs a win to move into the top four, looks like Dam is done even before his game tomorrow/
I hope yhe online tabloids don’t try to make controversy over the acceptance of Amy’s alternative spelling of the Kabba. I’ve seen the Quaran spelled with a “K” so why wouldn’t there be different acceptable spellings of this important ehrine of Islam. Of which I knew nothing. 0 for 3 on the day.
If Matt wins, then Amy can’t reach fourth. Consider —
Game 1: Matt wins, Sam second, Mattea third
Game 2: Amy wins, second/third inconsequential
Matt 9 points, Mattea and Amy 8 points each. Mattea places fourth (two game wins to Amy’s one).
Agree with you on the spelling of Kaaba. At least they didn’t want the last name of the former long serving Libyan dictator.
My hometown of Swindon was mentioned, how cool was that! No one had the correct rey however.
For Amy to win tomorrow, she has to beat both Andrew and James at the same time… that’s an uphill battle if I’ve ever seen one!
I kind of wish they would have paired Matt and Amy again to let them battle it out for that last spot. (I know that would make it three in a row).
I know predicting Jeopardy is a fool’s game, but it’s tough to see anyone but James winning this thing.
The only thing that gives me pause is that he’s missed both of the FJs that he’s actually attempted. I’m curious as to why he made an attempt at FJ in his third game from a runaway position. I assumed he wasn’t writing anything to not give any info about his knowledge base, but maybe he attempted it to get the practice precisely because he didn’t know it for sure?
this is why James is the GOAT
Good FJ answer/question. Too esoteric for me, but I learned something new today.👍
James is making child’s play of this tournament.
Dang… a tough day for me, missing the syndicated FJ! and then this one. I had no idea what landmark the clue was referring to 🙁 At least I didn’t miss all three #brightside
Current FJ streak: 1L
Have anyone of you read about the announcement from back in January about a Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament that the show will be holding next season? Sam Buttrey and either Amy or Matt will have to enter that tournament after tonight.
Yay! I actually got this one right! I lived in the Middle East for 7 years for my job. I knew that Al-Ka’ba was “The Cube” in English, and that it’s the holiest site for Muslims in Makkah (Mecca.) It’s normally spelled with a “K” in English, not with a “Q.” In Arabic the 1st letter is a “K,” so the best spelling in English would be “Ka’ba” or even “Kaaba.”
Hello! Glad you are all here. I am very puzzled by a question and answer… can anyone help clarify?
Double Jeopardy Answer, Category “17-18th Century Art”:
“Where have you gone, this man born Michaelangelo Merisi who did “Martyrdom of St. Matthew”, a nation turns it’s lonely eyes to you.”
The correct question was who was Carivaggio.
Aren’t these lyrics to “Mrs. Robinson?” and it should it have been Joe DiMaggio?
They were the lyrics—but no. The hint was simply that it sounded like “Joe DiMaggio”—like Caravaggio does.
Thanks Andy. I found that an odd clue, but thanks!
