Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After one of the most impressive Jeopardy! performances of all time, rowan holds a commanding advantage after Game 1 of the final. However, the lead is not insurmountable — absolutely anything can happen! Today’s winner will be seen again next Thursday in the fourth quarterfinal of the Tournament of Champions, against Courtney Shah and John Focht!

In the 20th century, Sabena served as the national airline of Belgium, and they commissioned famed Belgian artist René Magritte for “L’Oiseau de Ciel”. After being taken over by Swissair a few years prior, the airline declared bankruptcy in 2001, much to the consternation of the Belgian government. However, the sale of “L’Oiseau de Ciel” for €3.4 million in 2003 was incredibly helpful for former staff, as it meant the 12,000 former employees were able to be paid what was owed to them. As of 2022, Brussels Airlines is Belgium’s current flag carrier.

9 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, August 11, 2023"

  1. Saw this episode when it first aired and still missed it, Obscure Belgian Artists category is not my forte.

  2. I got this one only because of the Tom Stoppard play “After Magritte,” not because of any extensive knowledge of art.

  3. I also got this one because of one of the paintings by Magritte himself. But I still need to see if any other art museums have one of these Magritte works.

  4. Knew Sabena was Belgium’s airline so my mind went right to Magritte.

  5. There is an improperly capitalized “Rowan” in the final sentence of the Double Jeopardy! recap. (Of course, that entire sentence is superfluous following the format change made in mid-April.)

  6. It sometimes pays to be a Baby Boomer. I remember Sabena Royal Belgian Airlines when they were operational, before 2001. I also remember the Sabena t.v. commercials from back in the 1970s. That knowledge also led me to Rene Magritte. I remember seeing a few of his works at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (the one with the “Rocky Steps”) back in 1994. They were charming paintings.
