Warning: This page contains spoilers for the September 27, 2023, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Mythology) for Wednesday, September 27, 2023 (Season 40, Game 13):

Chrysomallus was the name of the creature that was the source of this sought-after item, vellus aureum in Latin

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Allison Pistorius, an actor & assistant professor from Houston, Texas
Allison Pistorius on Jeopardy!
Mark Lucas, a strategist from Redondo Beach, California
Mark Lucas on Jeopardy!
Barb Fecteau, a high school librarian from Beverly, Massachusetts
Barb Fecteau on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

There are a few things to talk about in Jeopardy! land this morning. Firstly, as of 12:01 AM Pacific this morning, the WGA strike has ended. The show’s writers may return to work and Jeopardy! is no longer being struck against. This, of course, is contingent upon ratification of the WGA deal by the full WGA membership.

Secondly, the debut of Season 2 of Celebrity Jeopardy! is tonight at 8:00 Eastern (7:00 Central) on ABC. As I always say about primetime Jeopardy!, this could be a different network/station than you watch your normal syndicated Jeopardy! on. Tonight’s debut features Mark Duplass (Chip on The Morning Show), Emily Hampshire (Stevie on Schitt’s Creek), and Utkarsh Ambudkar (Jay on Ghosts).

On to today’s syndicated game, we have Barb Fecteau, Mark Lucas, and Allison Pistorius looking to join Michalle Gould and Jilana Cotter in the weekly final.

The first thing I would like to point out about this Final Jeopardy clue: No, it is not a repeated clue. Yes, it was similar to the clue we had in February about the same subject, but they are different clues. This was certainly an easy clue for me, as my writeup in February mentioned Chrysomallos/Chrysomallus (I’m not particularly concerned about the spelling here, it’s a transliteration into English of a term from two and a half millennia ago). Chrysomallus, the Golden Ram, was the offspring of Poseidon and Theophane; the Golden Fleece was famously quested for by Jason and his Argonauts (a group that included Castor & Pollux).

The Jeopardy Round saw Mark having the best time, by virtue of having the fewest number of incorrect responses! Allison sat second in spite of a judges’ reversal (which, yes, gets counted around these parts as a Triple Stumper.)

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Barb 5 correct 2 incorrect
Mark 4 correct 1 incorrect
Allison 2 correct 3 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Allison had to worry about her husband taking care of triplets when she got The Call.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Title Women; “M”usicals; Rivers Of Africa; The Pipe Organ; Let’s Party!; Sounds Fractional)

Double Jeopardy saw Barb recover from her Daily Double miss—she doubled up on the second clue of the round! Mark’s shot for the lead midway through the round saw his score fall down as he struggled to recover. In a game with 15 Triple Stumpers and 15 incorrect responses, Barb led going into Final.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Barb 15 correct 7 incorrect
Allison 13 correct 3 incorrect
Mark 15 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Barb $9,600
Allison $6,400
Mark $2,800

Final Jeopardy today was a triple get; Barb is your third finalist!

Tonight’s results:

Mark $2,800 + $1,402 = $4,202 (What is the Golden Fleece?)
Allison $6,400 – $0 = $6,400 (What is golden fleece?)
Barb $9,600 + $3,201 = $12,801 (What is the golden fleece?) (Finalist)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I would have thought that the show wouldn’t have repeated a question like TRICKY QUESTIONS $200, considering that none of the contestants gave a correct response when it originally ran in 2000, and that clue went about as viral as you could get in 2000.
  • Today’s box score: September 27, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Barb $9,600 Allison $6,400 Mark $2,800)

Barb: Standard cover bet over Allison is $3,201. (Actual bet: $3,201)

Mark: Not really a lot you can do here; you’d need two players to bet too much to have a chance. I’m going to say anything that isn’t “all in” gives you about an equal chance at second place here. (Actual bet: $1,402)

Allison: If Barb bets to cover, she falls to $6,399. Stand pat. (Actual bet: $0)

  1. The gold part was easy part of my guess – I see au, and I think gold. And being a fan of Brooks Brothers, and having a pittance of knowledge of mythology, I guessed golden fleece.

  2. What is “the Golden Fleece”? Three for three this week. (It is believed that the origin of this story lies in an ancient practice of using fleeces to pan for gold.)

  3. I also thought “golden fleece” from the “au” and “vellum”.

  4. The golden fleece was what I got from the Greek words au and vellum. Also Jason and the Argonauts were looking for the golden fleece

  5. Michael Johnston | September 27, 2023 at 7:54 pm |

I forgot that clue from February but it didn’t matter. I remembered this from Latin.

    • I did “remember” the clue from February, but not the “answer”. I don’t know much Greek or Latin words, stories, etc. so I responded “silkworms” because ‘Chryso’ made me think of cocoons. [And Castor & Pollux are always going to make me think of Orphan Black rather than the Argonauts. 🙄]

BTW, Andy’s pointed “it is not a repeated clue” tickled me because my immediate response had been that it was. HOWEVER, I also immediately THOUGHT that I was bound to be wrong and just recognizing that there had been a related clue that Andy had provided additional information about. [Note I said “tickled, not “ticked”.]

  6. Contestants are now doing 10 percentage points better on FJ than on DDs for the season. Last season it was 20+ percentage points in favor of DDs. This certainly seems to be a function of the writing.

At some point, the optimal betting strategy from a lead on a late DD changes.

  7. Concerning Andy’s thoughts on TRICKY QUESTIONS $200 I would say “Well, the $200 clue is expected to be [supposed to be?] the easiest in that category and the others were very easy, too!” I could barely believe there were two triple stumpers in that category. Barb actually got the point of the $800 triple stumper but didn’t realize she should pick the actor she had never heard of (or at least was not nearly as famous as the other two for playing early movie “monsters”).

  8. I know next to nothing of Latin.
Maybe I did, I would understand how in the world I came up with “what is the ‘golden fleece?”

  9. Hi. My husband and I really enjoyed the “Tricky Question” Category on Jeopardy and would like to play that category with our adult kids at Thanksgiving. Could you send me the questions and answers? That would be awesome!!
    Thanks
