Andy’s Weekly Thoughts: October 23–27, 2023

Welcome back to another week of editorial thoughts! I hoped to stay positive with this week’s editorial, but once the online reaction to Thursday’s game happened, that no longer became a tenable situation.

I Can’t Wait For Week 7 Of Celebrity Jeopardy!

The matchup for Quarterfinal #7 of Celebrity Jeopardy has been released. Due to the CMA Awards airing on ABC on November 8, this quarterfinal won’t be airing until November 15. However, I think many fans will be happy with this matchup: WWE wrestler Becky Lynch, Saturday Night Live‘s Rachel Dratch (who famously portrayed Debbie Downer), and former child star Macaulay Culkin. This is a matchup that I can not wait to see, and I hope that other fans feel the same way.

On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink

I couldn’t help but notice that Ken Jennings wore a pink shirt on Wednesday’s episode. Interestingly, I had just put a game from 1991 into J! Archive earlier that day—where Alex Trebek was also wearing a pink shirt! I thought both hosts looked really good in pink and would love to see more of that in the future.

Here are the pictures:

Who do you think wore it better?

In Defence Of The Players From Thursday, And The Hall Of Famers Category

Of course, the clickbait sports media ran with the fact that the players on Thursday went 1-for-5 in HALL OF FAMER BY POSITION. This category was never intended to be easy.

When the category first ran in 2005—as part of the Ultimate Tournament of Champions—the contestants went just 3-for-5. If some of the best-ever players in Jeopardy! history could only get 3 of them correct, are we at all surprised that Champions Wildcard players could only get one of them correct? I think mocking the contestants for not doing well on difficult sports questions is uncalled for, and I suspect that the ones doing the mocking did just as poorly on the other 11 categories on the board.

In Closing

We’re halfway through the strike replacement programming! Enjoy next week’s games!

  1. Actually, I think Ken wore it better. I was expecting the opposite because pink seems to me to look better on someone who has grey hair, but I guess Alex’s hair wasn’t very grey in 1991. TBH, my choice was mostly based on my prejudice against the style of tie that was too thick around the neck for the size/coverage of the shirt collar (though I know that was acceptable at the time).

  2. The sports category was pretty easy for me, as I got 4 of 5, but yeah, I was pretty horrible in the other 11 categories. I saw 3 episodes of Jeopardy taped just over a year ago and would never chastise these players. Just to get to the Alex Trebek stage is amazing to me.

  3. Omg can’t wait for the next celebrity game. I love all 3 of them and it should be a fun game with all involved
