Fall 2023 Champions Wildcard: Clubs — Semifinals Preview

27 players are now down to 9 in the Clubs bracket; here’s my preview for the semifinals!

Wednesday, November 22, 2023:

Nick Cascone (16)
Queens, New York
Nick Cascone on Jeopardy!
67 correct, 13 incorrect
3/3 on rebound attempts (on 10 rebound opportunities)
39.18% in first on buzzer (67/171)
3/7 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $3,200)
2/3 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $15,133

Nick advanced to the semifinals on the back of 10 correct responses in Double Jeopardy in his quarterfinal (and a $5,000 Daily Double.)
Deanna Bolio (13)
Campbell, California
Deanna Bolio on Jeopardy!
102 correct, 18 incorrect
10/12 on rebound attempts (on 28 rebound opportunities)
33.68% in first on buzzer (96/285)
7/7 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $17,400)
1/5 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $14,520

Deanna followed up a Second Chance victory with a very impressive buzzer performance in the quarterfinals, getting in on 78% of her attempts, the best of all 27 players in the Clubs bracket.
Kit Sekelsky (3)
Kent, Ohio
Kit Sekelsky on Jeopardy!
94 correct, 20 incorrect
4/6 on rebound attempts (on 23 rebound opportunities)
34.74% in first on buzzer (99/285)
3/4 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $4,000)
1/5 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $11,880

Kit survived a Triple Stumper final in the middle quarterfinal to see her way through to the semis. At 1/5 in Final Jeopardy, there has to be a Final that suits her at some point, right?

Overall Thoughts: Deanna is dialled in on the signalling device—if she keeps that going, the path to victory for Nick or Kit would be through the Daily Doubles. Kit’s clue selection was much better on that account, with no 1s or daggers in her quarterfinal clue selection stats. Plus, Kit seems to find a way to have Final Jeopardy break in her direction. I do think Deanna is most likely to win this, but anything can happen on the Alex Trebek Stage.

Thursday, November 23, 2023:

Jen Jazwinski (5)
Algonquin, Illinois
Jen Jazwinski on Jeopardy!
84 correct, 10 incorrect
5/6 on rebound attempts (on 11 rebound opportunities)
34.21% in first on buzzer (78/228)
4/6 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $8,000)
4/4 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $15,400

Jen’s exciting victory, where she and Matt Takimoto were tied going into Final Jeopardy, kicked the Clubs bracket off with a bang.
Ed Hashima (12)
Sacramento, California
Ed Hashima on Jeopardy!
113 correct, 21 incorrect
14/15 on rebound attempts (on 28 rebound opportunities)
36.84% in first on buzzer (105/285)
7/9 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $13,800)
1/5 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $18,440

A pair of late-game Daily Doubles saw Ed pull away from both Sandy Olive and Nick Heise late in his quarterfinal.
Amy Bekkerman (6)
Durham, New Hampshire
Amy Bekkerman on Jeopardy!
76 correct, 15 incorrect
9/9 on rebound attempts (on 17 rebound opportunities)
30.26% in first on buzzer (69/228)
7/9 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $13,000)
2/4 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $13,300

Amy advanced out of the quarterfinals in a runaway after the Daily Doubles bit Scott Plummer.

Overall Thoughts: Ed is the favorite in this one by virtue of his 46 attempts in the quarterfinals; he’s more likely to have some uncontested attempts in the semifinal.

Friday, November 24, 2023:

Fred Nelson (21)
Fresno, California
Fred Nelson on Jeopardy!
61 correct, 15 incorrect
2/2 on rebound attempts (on 9 rebound opportunities)
39.77% in first on buzzer (68/171)
1/3 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $3,000)
2/3 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $16,000

Fred had the highest overall score in the quarterfinals after a very exciting quarterfinal battle with Stuart Crane and Emily Fiasco.
Danielle Maurer (10)
Peachtree Corners, Georgia
Danielle Maurer on Jeopardy!
64 correct, 10 incorrect
6/7 on rebound attempts (on 20 rebound opportunities)
25.56% in first on buzzer (57/223)
6/6 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $17,000)
2/4 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $11,450

Danielle seems to just know how to win; Mattea Roach’s “giant-killer” advanced out of the quarters despite giving 16 fewer correct responses than Carrie Cadwallader in the first two rounds.
Dennis Chase (9)
Palm Springs, California
Dennis Chase on Jeopardy!
102 correct, 14 incorrect
6/6 on rebound attempts (on 13 rebound opportunities)
44.05% in first on buzzer (100/227)
4/6 on Daily Doubles (Net Earned: $2,600)
2/4 in Final Jeopardy
Average Coryat: $19,500

A miss in Final Jeopardy from Alan Johnson gave Dennis a come-from-behind victory in his quarterfinal.

Overall Thoughts: Dennis had 48 attempts in the quarterfinal, but how much of that was aggressive gameplay? (He did have six incorrect responses.) If there’s one player in this bracket who knows how to capitalize on opponent mistakes, it’s absolutely Danielle Maurer. This could be a very interesting semifinal.
