Garrett Marcotte, a software engineer from Boulder, Colorado![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today is the final semifinal of Fall 2023’s Champions Wildcard competition, with this game being between Garrett Marcotte, Yungsheng Wang, and Andrew Chaikin. With how strong all three players can be—Garrett and Yungsheng being 3-day champions and Andrew having been a strong 1-day champion—I am expecting to see an excellent matchup here. In fact, this matchup would not have been out-of-place as a final.
Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

Of the Big 4 airlines, three of them—Delta, United, and American—commenced operations prior to World War II. The clear youngest of the four, Southwest, commenced operations in 1971. It began operating in Texas only, flying at first between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, and set the standards for many “low-cost” carriers into the 21st century.
Southwest, which made its name by flying out of Dallas’ Love Field and Houston’s Hobby Airport (instead of DFW and George Bush Intercontinental respectively), often utilizes a city’s secondary airport; another famous example is how Southwest uses Midway Airport in Chicago instead of O’Hare. (This has been a sticking point for decades for the country’s major airlines.)

What is Southwest? I knew it was a young and growing airline, but not the details—I count this one as a lucky guess.
Yeah, me, too….I knew it wasn’t around when I was born, and with Continental and US Air and Pan Am no longer around, I figured it had to be part of the big four.
Exactly. With mergers and failures, American, Delta, and, United, would figure to be the “Big Three” in commercial aviation. Southwest, being the biggest “discount” carrier, would figure to be the fourth. I don’t remember hearing about it until the late 20th Century.
BTW Andy, you mention that Southwest flies mainly out of “secondary” airports, like Dallas’s Love Field. Legend is that is where Southwest’s stockmarket abbreviation “LUV” came from.
That (about LUV) is what I had heard, too.
tsk Missed it. I had no idea that SW was so big, bigger than United!?
No, United flies more passengers than Southest.
MarkO,
For what it’s worth, Wikipedia shows that Southwest flew 12.5 million more passengers last year. It looks like 2015 was when Southwest passed United in annual passengers. United still has a bigger fleet, goes to more locations and has more daily flights.
Interesting – my data was stale. Thanks for the correction. Cheers.
It was one of the easier final questions recently-at least for me.
I thought-which large airline was not around when I was a kid. Therefore I did not have to think about it very long.
Finally get one! I flew on Southwest when I was 25 and it was their 25th anniversary so I received some accolades! 😄
Andy, Southwest does now have flights in and out of O’Hare starting back in 2021 (but MDW is still their ‘major’ airport in Chicago).
I never flew on Southwest airlines but I heard about the 25th anniversary. Still though I prefer EVA air though and Cathay Pacific
Now THAT was a game (esp. the DJ and FJ)! It’s hard to fault anyone’s play or betting, and there was maybe only one or two Triple Stumpers that had me scratching my head. When Andrew hit both DDs, Yungsheng had no choice but to try and run the 2000 clues.. and he pretty much did it! And I thought the Final question was reasonably hard, but fair (somewhat of an advantage to folks on the West side of the US, since that’s mostly SW’s millieu, but maybe with all the negative press they got last year at Xmas time, they’re more widely known? I figured it out, PARTLY atoning for having drawn a blank on Moby Dick earlier) Anyway, good episode and finish!
🤦 I couldn’t remember United [clearly I’ve never even shopped for a flight], so was thinking Southwest was number 3 and thought probably either Alaska or Jetblue was the 4th one they were looking for and went with Alaska, thinking (correctly) that it was probably bigger than Jetblue. I’d assumed it was younger than Southwest because I’d heard of Southwest longer, but it turns out it is much older (founded in 1932). However, had it made the Big 4 rather than Southwest having done so, it would still be the baby of the bunch.
I wasn’t able to watch this Thursday Semifinal, as I was out at Buffalo Wild Wings with a co-worker (she’s a major Raiders fan and is happy), but I read the FJ here and managed to actually come up with the right answer. 🙂 As the saying goes, every now and then a blind squirrel (me) finds a nut. Sounds like I missed 1 heck of a game. 🙁
It would be nice to know the thought process behind FJ bets. It is my belief that there is no thought process by most players. The bets boggle my mind. The last 2 nights, the leaders had about a 90% chance of winning if they bet correctly. With the way they bet, they had about a 50% chance of winning. Most players seem to also have no concept on how to play the game. With a big lead late in DJ, they go for small dollar values. They should be trying to find the DD so that someone else cannot double up.
