Warning: This page contains spoilers for the January 16, 2024, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category New Nations) for Tuesday, January 16, 2024 (Season 40, Game 92):

In Sept. 2023 the U.S. recognized 2 new nations in free association with New Zealand: Niue & this archipelago

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Sharon Stone, an early childhood intervention manager from Round Rock, Texas
Sharon Stone on Jeopardy!
Katie Palumbo, a museum membership specialist from Amawalk, New York
Katie Palumbo on Jeopardy!
Andy Tirrell, a political science & international relations professor from San Diego, California
Andy Tirrell on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

The first group of Season 39’s Champions Wildcard begins today, as we have 27 players competing for one spot in the Tournament of Champions! The first of our quarterfinalists are Andy Tirrell, Katie Palumbo, and Sharon Stone! Andy and Katie both ended the runs of some really strong players in ToCers Cris Pannullo and Yogesh Raut, respectively, which I think will boost their stock in this competition. However, Sharon is the 2-game champion in this matchup! This is definitely a game where absolutely anything can happen!

Also, tonight will see the third of three semifinal matchups in Season 2 of Celebrity Jeopardy!; tonight’s matchup features Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live), Mo Rocca (CBS Sunday Morning) and comedian Heather McMahan; one of these three players will be joining Lisa Ann Walter and Katie Nolan in the final!

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

On September 25, 2023, the United States Department of State announced that it had established diplomatic ties between the United States and two Pacific island nations: Niue and the Cook Islands. While neither is yet a full U.N. member state, this does allow for these nations to cooperate with the United States on important Pacific issues, including our current climate crisis.

I’m honestly not sure how this Final Jeopardy is going to play; it’s a good piece of current events trivia, but this also feels very much “you know it or you don’t”; there’s no real extra information here that will get you to a correct response.

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: 20th Century Americans; Half A Category; Ballet; TV Cliffhangers; Authors As Book Characters; Rhyme Time)

Sharon and Andy got to the Daily Doubles, both getting things correct, and Andy extending his lead considerably with his. This caused Katie to have to take guesses to catch up, which didn’t work out well for her. (She ended with 7 incorrect in the round). As it was, Andy had a runaway going into a 2-player Final.

Andy 21 correct 1 incorrect
Sharon 8 correct 2 incorrect
Katie 17 correct 10 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Sharon $6,100
Katie -$1,000

Despite Sharon’s hope regarding Andy’s strategy, Andy did not bet it all, and was correct in Final. He’s a semifinalist!

Tonight’s results:

Katie -$1,000 (By rule, did not participate in Final Jeopardy)
Sharon $6,100 – $6,000 = $100 (What is I hope he bet it all)
Andy $21,800 + $1,800 = $23,600 (What are the Cook Islands) (Semi-Finalist)

Andy Tirrell, today's Jeopardy! winner (for the January 16, 2024 game.)

  1. I didn’t know it. I had heard of the Cook Islands, but had no idea that they had become a nation. (And I know nothing whatever about Niue.)

  2. I don’t know much about niue but I do remember the cook islands. I do need to findout the date of when they became a nation

  3. In New Mexico where I live, Jeopardy is broadcast at 6pm so your shirts are not recognized here….darn it.

  4. Bill Vollmer | January 16, 2024 at 6:51 pm |

I presume that this Final Jeopardy subject was a news story when it happened, somewhere in the inside pages. Unfortunately, my loss streak on Final Jeopardys continues. I didn’t recall the news story, and, while I know of the Cook Islands, didn’t know that become sn (semi) independent nation. As for the other one, like RedRose, ‘d never heard of it. (Good answers for a British reverse Family Feud type game show.)
In the second Daily Double. if Andy had just said “What is the Univ. of California?” would that had been ruled acceptable, or, was the specific campus needed?

    • Hi Bill! If I had a guess, I think the Berkeley would be needed, as there are quite a few UC schools here in California.

      • Bill Vollmer | January 17, 2024 at 1:45 pm |

        Jeff;
I might be one of the few outside California that knows right off that both the University of California and California State Univerty are systems, with, as you said, many campuses, right off hand.
But to those not in know, Berkley is the University of California. So does the specificity rule apply here?

        • Hi Bill! Might be one of those times that Ken says more specific or he might not! Wish we were on the show and he could tell us. 🙂

  5. I think “Chang and Eng” should’ve been accepted. A quick Google search turns up several billings were they are listed as such.

    • And from my quick Google search, I think you are confusing “billing” (generally done as a headline) and “description” (generally done as copy).

Also note that any requisite sourcing must come from the 1800s, considering the wording of the clue. 20th and 21st century sources using their names as a headline do not count here.

Also, please note that the Site Comment Policy requires citations when objecting to clue material. Further comments lacking citations will not be approved.

      • I was looking at Oxford Language’s definition of billing as “the fact of being advertised or publicized in particular way” and Merriam-Webster’s “advertising or public promotion (as of a product or personality)”, and only 19th century source material.

This seems like a clear example to me, even using the headline definition:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang_and_Eng_Bunker#/media/File:%22Siamese_Twins!!!%22_Memphis_Evening_Ledger,_October_29,_1857.jpg

In my opinion, the clue should have been more strongly pinned if they weren’t planning on accepting “Chang and Eng”.

That said, this probably already far to much ink spilled on an ultimately inconsequential decision. I’m happy to agree to disagree and drop the matter.

  6. Retro congratulations to Andy in tonight’s show. 🙂 In my predictions for these Quarterfinal games, I had predicted that Sharon was going to win. My last comment was …”Now Andy will probably win in a runaway tonight?” Um, yep!
