Today’s contestants:

Michael Hutchinson, a maths teacher from Reading
Michael Hutchinson on Jeopardy! UK
Rachel Munro, a business analyst from London
Rachel Munro on Jeopardy! UK
Dennis Wang, an actuary from Walthamstow, London (1-day total: £4,151)
Dennis Wang on Jeopardy! UK

Andy’s Pre-Game Thoughts:

Dennis Wang is your returning champion after his more-than-£4,000 victory on yesterday’s program; today’s challengers are Rachel Munro and Michael Hutchinson!

Because I’m sure someone else will point it out if I don’t—Michael was the captain of the University of Reading University Challenge squad who lost the 2021–22 final to Imperial College, London. I just have a sense that Michael has what it takes to maybe win a few games on this show. Variance is absolutely a thing, though—I could very well be wrong in my predictions!

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

That definitely hurt his momentum, as Dennis came on strong early in this round! Michael then got both Daily Doubles back to back—he missed the first, but got the second. Michael came back after the break to make sure he had the lead going into Final!

Dennis: Standard cover bet over Rachel is £476. (Actual bet: £2,474)

Rachel: You can’t both defend against Dennis’s small range and stay ahead of Michael if he makes a cover bet and is incorrect. Either bet less than £225 or more than £525. (Actual bet: £1,470)

Michael: Standard cover bet over Dennis is £1,851. (Actual bet: £1,851)

More information about Final Jeopardy:

Owing to its high elevation, Quito, Ecuador has a very pleasant climate, with an average afternoon high temperature only at about 70ºF (21ºC). La Paz, the seat of government of Bolivia, is the only national capital with a higher elevation, about 800 meters higher than Quito. (This has actually caused problems for Bolivia at times in FIFA World Cup qualifying, as Bolivia’s elevation is high enough such that there aren’t enough stadia in the country at a low elevation.)

3 Comments on "Jeopardy! UK Game Recap – Friday, January 12, 2024"

  1. Well, I got this one right despite having been wrong about the highest capital, which I assumed was Lhasa. Lhasa is higher than La Paz (which I had incorrectly assumed was a bit lower than Quito as well as knowing it was farther from the equator), but it is no longer a “country”, but rather a ‘Tibet Autonomous Region’ of China. [I did know that China has much control over it, but erroneously thought it was still considered a country “on the world stage”.]

  2. Why does “Capital” apparently only mean capitals of countries and never capitals of states UNLESS stated as a state capital? I tried to research this and did not find that (in information about capitals across the world). [I did discover that a few countries have multiple capitals (for separate functions like judicial vs legislative) and a few foreign territories of Britain have capitals, but even that source made no mention of U.S. states.]

  3. Funny that the US and UK Friday FJs were both ABOUT world capitals.
