Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Nik Berry, a social studies teacher from Baltimore, Maryland |
Julie Sisson, a library circulation assistant from Everett, Washington |
Anji Nyquist, a hand model and podcast host from Minneapolis, Minnesota |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
The first of our Wild Card Play-In Games, hosted by Buzzy Cohen on TuneIn Radio, features Nik Berry, Julie Sisson, and Anji Nyquist. All three of these players were 1-time champions in Season 39; it appears to us on the outside that 1-time champions were selected by random draw to take part in this round. These games are audio only; therefore, there will not be any images available to me to post here on the site!
Nick did have the highest average Coryat of the three players in this game; however, Julie did go 2-for-2 in Final Jeopardy during her run. It’s really hard to predict a winner at this stage; I’m just going to enjoy tonight’s games!

Andy’s Thoughts:
- It wasn’t easy to pick up on the category names audio-only; both OVER CASTE & IAMB WOMAN required me actually hearing a clue.
- Those who watched the main game today will recognize the $200 clue in STOP! for sure.
- Today’s box score will be linked to if posted by the show.

Yeah… I am not feeling this. It was rather difficult with not being able to see the clue as you hear it and not being able to keep track of the scores. It’s probably because this is so different than what I’m accustomed to. All that said, FJ was easy and I’m surprised nobody got it.
I’m with you on your last sentence. I wasn’t even thinking “Tourist Spot” to help, just “a location named for a newspaper office”. I guess the rest of the clue kept ‘Herald Square’ from being correct. Lucky for me ‘Herald Square’ didn’t even occur to me until after I had already said ‘Times Square’.
Overall, pretty good, in my opinion. The games had the same pace and feel of televised episodes. I didn’t find not being able to see the clues much of a problem, nor having views of the board — on the latter, I probably was aided by Coryat tracking, so I had a running diagram of the shape of the board.
Scoring updates is one thing that could be improved on for the third play-in game. I know some people would rag on Mayim for going through all three players’ scores when a Daily Double was found, but in this audio-only format, that would really be helpful in gaging the wisdom of players’ wagers. (Remember, not everyone has a “Saunders spreadsheet” open as the game is going along.) Score readout could also be added at the first break, before the interviews.
I definitely agree with that. And, even for someone with a “Saunders spreadsheet” like me, the more score updates, the better—I very much enjoy being able to check my work as often as possible with what’s airing.
This was interesting and I am glad that we are getting these games in some fashion. Thank you for providing the link to these on demand games Andy. Time to listen to Game 2.
I also missed FJ.
I originally missed ready the category for this Final Jeopardy but keywords “name changed when a newspaper moved it’s offices there” lead me to “what is Times Square?”. Not sure if knowing that the category was entitled Tourist Spots before seeing the Fonal Jeopardy answer would have helped, or, hindered, my thinking.
Nice to “see” Buzzy out of his role in the Chase.
