Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Business) for Tuesday, April 23, 2024 (Season 40, Game 162):

In the 1850s the .925 sterling silver standard was instituted by this company, the first American one to do so

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Mark Lashley, a professor from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Mark Lashley on Jeopardy!
Lianne Schaffer, a piano teacher & musician from Newton, Massachusetts
Lianne Schaffer on Jeopardy!
Nam Nguyen, a playwright from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada (1-day total: $26,999)
Nam Nguyen on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Nam Nguyen became your new Jeopardy! champion yesterday when his supreme buzzer skill—he got in on 16 of his 19 attempts in Double Jeopardy—helped unseat two-day champion Marko Saric. Today, he faces off against Mark Lashley and Lianne Schaffer.

Because pure silver is generally seen as too soft for modern use, it is usually alloyed with other metals, generally copper, in order to increase its strength. This became known as “sterling silver”; the true etymology of “sterling” is still debated. As a way of ensuring the quality of sterling silver, the English legally required 12 troy ounces of sterling silver to contain 11oz, 2.25dwt of pure silver and 17.75dwt of alloyed metal—approximately 92.6% silver. This later moved to an alloy of 92.5% silver, and in 1851, Tiffany & Co. signed an agreement with New York silversmith John C. Moore to create silverware pieces. As part of that agreement, Moore used the English sterling silver standard, which was later adopted throughout the United States for sterling silver.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Presidents & First Ladies; Culture, Popularly; Italian Products; Words & Their Meanings; What Are You Afraid Of?; Relax, It’s Math)

While Lianne got to the Daily Double, Nam picked up 7 correct in the opening round to jump out into the lead. He had at $5,200 at the break, to Mark’s $1,000 and Lianne’s $800.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Nam 7 correct 0 incorrect
Mark 3 correct 1 incorrect
Lianne 2 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Mark got The Call on the same day his wife’s first novel was published.
Lianne plays in a classic rock cover band.
Nam got The Call the same day his mom’s car was stolen.

All three players had good segments after the break—except for maybe Nam failing to pick up a key “December” in a clue about Gene Autry. Lianne sat second after 30 clues, with Mark picking first in Double Jeopardy.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Nam 13 correct 1 incorrect
Lianne 5 correct 1 incorrect
Mark 7 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Mark $1,800

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: The Picture Of Someone Named Grey; Shared International Lakes; Name That Author; 20th Century Song, 21st Century Ad; I’ll Remember Late April; “Pro” Nouns)

Nam may have had a case of “once bitten, twice shy”—after missing the first Daily Double, he bet just $2,000 on the last one—which meant that Mark was able to keep Nam from having a runaway on the final clue of the round.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Nam 25 correct 2 incorrect
Mark 17 correct 4 incorrect
Lianne 8 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 4 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Nam $17,600
Mark $9,000
Lianne $7,000

The two Americans got Tiffany, the Canadian did not—and that means that Mark is our new champion! He returns tomorrow to defend.

Tonight’s results:

Lianne $7,000 + $7,000 = $14,000 (What is Tiffany?)
Mark $9,000 + $8,601 = $17,601 (What is Tiffany?) (1-day total: $17,601)
Nam $17,600 – $401 = $17,199 (What is Wells Fargo?)

Nam: Standard cover bet over Mark is $401. (Actual bet: $401)

Lianne: Mark has to go big here to have a chance of winning. Bet no more than $6,200 here and take second if Mark is incorrect. (Actual bet: $7,000)

Mark: If Nam is incorrect, he falls to $17,199. Bet at least $8,200. (Actual bet: $8,601)

  1. I wonder if “Tiffanys” would be acepted

  2. I guessed “What is Wells Fargo?” They dealt in gold, so, I thought, maybe also silver.

  3. RedRose!

I too said ‘What is Wells Fargo’… influenced by the fantastic Western TV show starring Dale Robertson called ‘Tales of Wells Fargo’.

  4. And I also went with Wells Fargo! I guess we were in good company with Nam, whose tenure as champ is ending a bit too soon, IMO (but–kudos to Mark).

I guess this Final Jeopardy falls into the “something I should have understood” category.
Until Tiiffany (& Co.) was acknowledged as the correct response, the meaning of the “answer” (clue) was lost to me.
Then I understood it refered to the purity of silver, as used in jewelry, and, etc. About 2 minutes too late

    • Right, “sterling” was the key word in the clue to point to the direction of cutlery, jewelry, etc., not the unrefined ore (with multiple impurities) or bullion [I assume PURE silver] that 1850s Wells Fargo would be associated with.

‘Tiffany’ came to me immediately, leaving me to wonder if that choice was “too easy” (so probably wrong), but luckily I stuck with it.

  6. A bit of a fluky loss by Nam. But that is part of the charm of Jeopardy!

Oooff! Nam lost this game on that last DD. A larger wager and he would have had a well-deserved runaway. As Andy has frequently said something to the effect that you have a better chance with DD than FJ so you should go big on them. I feel kind of badly for Nam as he seems to be a very good player. Congrats to Mark though.

I kind of expected final to be triple get. It came to me right away which always makes it seem like a triple get. 🙂

  8. Tough loss. If Champions Wildcard is still a thing next postseason, I predict that Nam will be a serious contender.

  9. I couldn’t think of it again! 0 for last 41, so nothing new about missing FJ. Noah and his Ark have nothing on me. Just kidding!

Always interesting where we get a player winning right after they kept the runaway at bay on clue 60.

Retro congrats on the win by Mark and we’ll see how things play out on Wednesday’s game. 🙂

    • You are better than this. I think maybe you got psyched out by the much more difficult FJ clues from the tournaments. Why don’t you go back over the last couple of weeks of FJ clues reviewing their nuances to see if you can get your groove back before Masters starts up 😉.

      • Thank you for the kind words Lisa! 🙂 I might have to do just that. But yeah, I think difficult clues of the tournaments might just have me a bit psyched out lately. Definitely going to keep on trying no matter what. On Friday, I won’t be able to watch due to going to a playoff hockey game, but I will read the clue and give myself 30 seconds to get it right.
