This title character of the top song from 1996 can’t stand her boyfriend Vitorino & spurns him to be with his 2 friends
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Henry Lindstrom, a customer experience lead originally from Altadena, California![]() |
Deana Krumhansl, an attorney originally from Honolulu, Hawaii![]() |
Weckiai Rannila, an engineer from Albuquerque, New Mexico (2-day total: $28,000)![]() |

Correct response: What is “Macarena”?

Yes, Macarena is not just the title of the song. She is the title character of the megahit dance craze from the summer of 1996. In the original Spanish lyrics of the song, Macarena spurns Vitorino as he is being inducted into the Army, essentially making the song one of many that could be filed under “these lyrics are terrible, but they’re set to a catchy beat.”
I think the show is hoping that the category + “top song from 1996” is enough to get most of the playing audience there; I also think that most who don’t get this correct will probably be left thinking that this was one they should have had.

- That was a disappointing Final Jeopardy bet from Henry.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Deana $9,400 Henry $8,800 Weckiai $3,600)
Weckiai: I’d limit my bet to $2,400 here to stay ahead of Deana if she’s incorrect. (Actual bet: $3,600)
Deana: Standard cover bet over Henry is $8,201. : (Actual bet: $8,201)
Henry: Bet between $1,201 (thereby covering any of Deana’s low range) and $1,599 (thereby keeping Weckiai locked out.) (Actual bet: $7,800)

I didn’t get “Macarena”. I have heard the song once, but I preferred not to remember it.
Agreed.
Heard the song countless times, but never paid attention to the lyrics. Like Andy said, regret not getting this one
It seemed like the only plausible answer, but I never knew what the lyrics were about (or that Macarena was a woman).
Same. I only got it because it is the song I most associate with that year.
If they hadn’t given Vitorino’s name, I would never have got this. But seeing a Latinx name led me straight to the answer.
I didn’t realize it was a Latinx name. If I’d had to guess, I would’ve thought Italian. But yes, I missed this one. Now if they had mentioned there was a dance craze that went with the song, I would’ve known.
This was an easy get for me; the top song of 1996 was definately the dance craze song “Macarena” and yes, she was a woman, and spurns Vitorino. At some point listening to the lyrics was important. Amazing that this song is now 28 years old!!!
Totally hated the song, but I knew the lyrics and remembered the line “let me tell you ’bout my boyfriend, the one they call Vitorino, don’t want him, can’t stand him…” because it was so weird and explained a lot about Macarena, the character.
A huge craze for about half a year. Practically the dictionary definition of a one-hit wonder. I knew it right away, which I guess means that I’m getting old. 🙂
I can’t stand the song. I saw the dining room staff on a cruise ship dance the Macarena once.
Andy. Maybe others would consider today’s Final Jeopardy “one that they should have gotten.” Not me. When the Macarena was so popular, the only part of the lyrics I ever understood was “Hey Macarena.” If I didn’t understand the lyrics in the first place, how could I expect to know the story as mentioned on the Final Jeopardy “answer” clue?
I glad that Weckiai was among the minority that actually understood the Lyrics.
Was in the first grade when this song and its dance were things. That was not an age at which I could interpret lyrics, nor a time where I’d have understood what a “top song” was. I’ve only heard the song once since like 1999. So I didn’t get it, and yes, I absolutely feel I should have, and I knew that even before the answer was revealed. I think my mind was just trying to forget anything other than a few of the moves of the dance, which are again fuzzy since I was 6 y/o back then. All I remember is my entire school doing the dance in the gym once…
The only two words that I ever understood from the song were “Macarena” and “Vitorino” so when I saw Vitorino in the clue, it was an easy jump to Macarena. As a result of Andy’s write-up, I Googled the lyrics. Now, I finally know what it was about, wow.
Would Henry’s FJ wager be considered “pulling a Cliff Clavin”?
Nope. What Cliff did is screw up a runaway from first. What Henry did was screw up a runaway from second which, while still not the greatest, is significantly less strategically unsound.
“Bring it!” said Deana.
Love it.
It is occasional wagers like Henry’s which reinforce the need to make a standard cover bet from the lead. I consider this a plus.
