A new spinoff of Jeopardy! has been greenlit.
Pop Culture Jeopardy! will be coming to Amazon Prime Video, as was broken by Variety this morning. Amazon is set to confirm this announcement at its upfront presentation this morning in New York.
This is the first spinoff of the show to be commissioned since Sports Jeopardy! stopped airing in 2016; Rock & Roll Jeopardy! aired from 1998 to 2001, while Jep! was a kids’ version that aired from 1998 to 2000 on GSN.
Interestingly, this competition may appear to be taking place in teams; according to Suzanne Prete at Sony Pictures: “With Michael Davies at the helm, Pop Culture Jeopardy! is going to be a nail biter for game show enthusiasts who can expect to see teams competing at the highest level of Jeopardy! combined with a fresh twist of pop culture Olympics for the mind…it’s going to be a must-watch for long-time viewers and new fans alike.”
Editorially, my thoughts on team Jeopardy! play are well-known; I don’t know how this will play out. I still think I’d personally rather see individuals play, but I invite Michael Davies to try to prove me wrong.
The show will be Executive Produced by Michael Davies; more information, including who will be hosting and an application process, will be revealed soon.

Your editorial points out that “this is not Wheel of Fortune”. However, afaik the only team system tried to date has been a rotation system; I don’t think anyone has ever tried true WoF style with two people per podium (each having a buzzer), which I think might fit a looser vibe for a Pop Culture Jeopardy.
Josef Adalian of Vulture (aka TVMoJoe) notes “three-player teams will compete tournament-style”; I wonder if this means we’re looking at something more akin to Friedman’s All-Stars, rather than Richards’s original JNCC concept. I guess we’ll see what, if anything, comes out of the upfronts themselves.
Others have found articles on vrious sites expounding on how “teams” on Pop Culture Jeopardy will work. Some, including you Andy, have expressed doubt on the whole”team” fromat as a whole.
Me, I’ll give this, the 1% club, and, other gAMES, THAT COMEOUT A TRY. iF i don’t like them, all I’velost is my time.
I also will try it out (if I still have Prime by then), but I can imagine not liking it because my least favorite part of ‘The Chase’ is when 2 or 3 make it to the final chase (instead of just one) and one of them rings in with a wrong answer.
I saw this on the official Jeopardy site, but since I don’t have Prime and I don’t intend to, this will be moot for me.
Since I do not have Prime Video, I will not be watching this incarnation of the show!!
I see enough pop culture clues on regular Jeopardy
Right, and ‘Pop’ is short for popular, so does that imply all will be fairly current (such as something about Dua Lipa, which I only know to have appeared on SNL) or not too long ago (like Michael Jackson) or even pop culture from “back in the day” (like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B)? Will sports be considered pop culture? Or maybe only sports figures that crossed over to other pop culture genres like Dwayne Johnson and Travis Kelce (in different ways)?
The main reason for such a show would seem to me to try to appeal to viewers who would be interested in guessing along, but were never interested in doing so with a show that was primarily about literature, science, geography, governments and classic art.
I would hope that they will have a separate application/qualification process for competing on this one.
