(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Charon is the largest satellite of the dwarf planet Pluto, discovered by U.S. Naval Observatory astronomer James Christy after observing some images of Pluto taken by the Naval Observatory’s Flagstaff Station. Wishing to name the body after his wife Charlene, he proposed Charon as a scientific-sounding name, only to serendipitously discover later that Charon was the Greek name of the ferryman over the river Styx, somewhat mythologically appropriate to Pluto (even though Pluto was a Roman name and Charon Greek). Persephone was also suggested due to Persephone being the wife of Hades/Pluto.

Interestingly, Charon is large enough compared to Pluto that the two bodies are actually gravitationally locked—meaning, the two bodies always show the same face to each other, and Pluto rotates around a point that is outside of itself.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • No, Erin’s score today is not a record.

  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

30 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, June 24, 2024"

  1. I guessed “What is the moon of Pluto?” I couldn’t remember the name “Charon”. I know the show likes specific answers, so I don’t think mine would have been accepted.

    • I think you’re right, but only because Pluto has other moons.

    • I was pretty much the same, though I said “What is the main moon of Pluto?” Do you think that might have been acceptable? I think a case could be made for that being a more specific question-response than “What is Charon?”
because of ‘this body’ in the clue — like ‘this body’ is the moon and ‘the moon’ is Charon..

  2. If I’m not much mistaken, the “gravitationally locked” issue is part of the reason Pluto got demoted to “dwarf planet” status.

Knowing the mythological link between Charon and Pluto (and Persephone), this was a gimme for me. The bit about the discoverer’s wife was new to me, though.

    • I’m pretty weak in astronomy, but knew Chiron was discovered around then so guessed that. Turns out Chiron was 1977. Charon being the actual answer and just one letter off was amusing.

      • Chiron was the wisest of the centaurs, and served as mentor to Achilles, Jason, and many others.

    • It is actually “Pluto rotates around a point that is outside of itself” that did it in.

      • Its status has to do with the mass of other objects in its orbit. The location of the center of mass of a planet-moon system relative to the planet is not a criterion for the IAU definition of a planet.

  3. Space stuff is kind of my niche, so needless to say, I got this very quickly. Always feels nice to start the week with a FJ get!

  4. Got it but it took me more than 30 seconds. It makes sense thinking about naming it Persephone.

  5. Quite often one of my cats’ names is an answer on Jeopardy, but this is the first time (in my recollection) that one of their names was part of the Final Jeopardy clue. And no, I did not get this one correct.

  6. Starting with Persephone, I knew that Pluto has satellites with female names, but did not remember any of them. Then I realized that 1978 was a long time ago, and it must be the first known satellite of Pluto, which is Charon.

    • And although it’s pronounced like “Karen”, the mythological figure Charon was male. The other moons of Pluto are Stxy, Nix, Kerberos and Hydra. Seems like they missed a chance with those last two. If only they were called Hix and Pix, that would have been boffo!

  7. First off, Drew is unbelievable.

    Second, oof.

Hey MasterDoge! I have missed a few shows as I was dealing with a death in my family.

Any elaboration on your comments re Drew.

      Thanks.

      • Drew first appeared last Wednesday, in Adriana Harmeyer’s 16th game; not only did he beat her, but he also beat her in a runaway, making him the only player in Jeopardy! history to take down a 10+ game winner via runaway.

Drew has been consistently extremely strong on the buzzer (I believe he’s second in “in first on buzzer %” only to Grant DeYoung when it comes to players eligible for the 2025 ToC), survived a tiebreaker on Friday for win #3, and is only bested by Eric Ahasic (6 wins) and Jonathan Fisher (11 wins) when it comes to longest streak for a player who won against a 10+ game champion. (Eric ended Ryan Long’s 16-game streak, while Jonathan famously ended Matt Amodio’s 38-day streak.)

In short: Drew is very, very good.

      • My condolences Rick.

Just a sincere question for Andy if he’s inclined to answer, and really it’s not meant as any kind of criticism it’s just a question- if you’re no longer giving wagering advice when it’s a double runaway which I totally agree with(1st has more than double 2nd, 2nd has more than double 3rd) then why give wagering advice when only two contestants make it to Final Jeopardy and it’s a runaway? Just thought I’d ask. Thanks for all you do! 🙂

    • Robert. J. Fawkes | June 24, 2024 at 5:30 pm |

Thanks, Patrick, I was thinking the same thing. It seems more consistent as you suggested.

  9. Bill Vollmer | June 24, 2024 at 5:28 pm |

Astromony is far from being a strong point for me, although in an trivia quiz that appears in my email, I did manage to guess that Vensus has no moons. (Don’t know ow I got that right.)
I didn’t know that Pluto had moons, much less that it was “gravitationally locked” with one.
In the Olde cars category, it was mentioned that Knute Rockne once was a part time salesman for South Bend, In based Studebacker. It could also been said that there once was a Rockne make of cars. (I hope he, or, his family got royalities for use of the name.)

  10. Like Drew, I put Ceres since that was the only thing that came to mind. A moon never occurred to me in those 30 seconds! There wasn’t much to go on.

Erin’s score is certainly among the worst ever (even if it’s not the record), but she had reasonable guesses so I can’t blame her, and nobody should (but who knows with the tabloids). Graham kind of disappeared sometime during Double Jeopardy and Drew just crushed it. Congrats to Drew for making the TOC (four games + giant killer will do that) and we’ll see how long he can, er, survive.

    • Admin note, in response to a deleted comment:

Listing negative records falls under the “negative towards contestants” section of the Site Comment Policy.

If I wanted negative records listed here, I would be compiling and posting them myself.

  11. I didn’t know FJ. This is the last of my delayed games due to sports for this season and I don’t think I’ll be delayed for anything else.

Retro congrats to a dominant win #4. No guy has won 5 this season, so will Drew be the 1st tomorrow? We shall see!

  12. If anybody deserves a “second chance” its Erin
