(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
In 1935, Harland Sanders had been operating a Shell service station in North Corbin, Kentucky, for five years, operating a restaurant on the side that served chicken, country ham, and steak when he was named an honorary Kentucky Colonel by then-governor Ruby Laffoon. By 1939, he discovered that pressure frying allowed for his chicken to be cooked well and very quickly, and in the 1950s began franchising his Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants.
Interestingly, honorary Kentucky Colonels do not need to be Kentucky residents—the list of honorary Colonels includes multiple Presidents as well as the current host of Jeopardy!, Ken Jennings.
Oftentimes, business-related Final Jeopardy clues stop champions in their tracks—it’ll be interesting to see if that happens today with Drew.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Drew $19,000 Luke $7,800 Jayaker $7,800)
Drew: Bet no more than $3,399 and enjoy win #7. (Actual bet: $1,000)
Luke: Going all in doesn’t guarantee you second; thus, I would bet all but $1 here—this covers anything but an all-in bet from Jayaker (that he’s guaranteed to win) and gives you second if he goes all in and is incorrect. (Actual bet: $7,000)
Jayaker: I believe the advantage is yours here for second by virtue of you leading after the first round. Thus, you should go all in to guarantee second place on a correct response. (Actual bet: $0)

“Who is Colonel Sanders?” I thought of a businessman with a military rank, and “his state” seemed to have something to do with it. So. I actually got a business-related question right, for once.
yes, I used the same reasoning for my guess – military title and referencing state (but not specific one because that would make it too easy).
My Jeopardy! tonight is being preempted by the Presidential debate. It usually airs at 7:30 PM Pacific.
Thanks for the heads up. Forgot all about the scheduling conflict here.
Our Jeopardy! aired as usual at 7:00 pm Eastern on ABC. BUT they had a box advertising the debate in upper right corner (except during commercials). It blocked the upper-half of Jayaker. Irritated us both as a tornado could be in the middle of town, and they would probably run a small scroll at the bottom of screen.
You and I must be near the same location Al, because ditto!
After WWII, construction of the Interstate Highway System threatened the viability of Col. Sanders’ business, which was going to divert traffic away from his current locale, that had been a major thoroughfare. To keep his business alive, he looked into franchising, which made the KFC as we know.
Preempted in Baltimore by COPA: USA vs Panama….
I love KFC…for sure. This game will also be pre-empted for tonight’s debate. My local ABC station certainly has been pre-empting Jeopardy! a lot lately; The NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup, and yesterday the NBA Draft. And then now the debate. When will it end?
Ditto Thomas and let’s hope it ends soon! 🙂
Tose events may have prempted Jeopardy from it’s regular time slot, but-according to a “clickbait” story, one ABC affilate did show Jeopardy, but also featured a “countdown clock” to the debate that (seemed to be always on Jayaker’s head.
Somewhere there’s an episode of “What’s My Line?” from the mid or late 1950s, in which Sanders was an ordinary contestant, not a mystery guest – because no one on the panel had ever heard of him! Times changed. 🙂
“Six-foot-six Drew Basile has moved into six figures after victory number six yesterday; that sure is a lot of sixes!”
I got one more for you – Six-foot-six Drew Basile, who finished in sixth in Survivor 45, has moved into six figures after victory number six yesterday. 🙂
MasterDoge!
You just cracked me up.
Thanks!
6 letters in his name; Basile and (An)drew.
Too late, now that he is 7 game winner?
Just finished a three hour walk/hike about Philadelphia and came back to this updated hilarity!!
Wow Rick! Good job! That 3 hour walk/hike and I’d be kaput!
Drew is officially a several-time champ.
Though there are several states that award honorary military rank (or, some kind of similar honor,) Kentucky is the most well known. So the portion of the “answer” (clue) that refered to the subject being awarded a “higher rank” some years after his actual military service, lead me to a “Kentucky Colonel.” The most well known businessman with that title was Col. Sanders. Unortunately I answered “Who is HARLAN Sanders?” Since the ‘answer” (clue) subject is a specific person, missing the last letter of the Colonel’s first name meanss I was incorrect, even though you can tell who I was referring to. I wouldn’t be surprised that Jayacker said “Who is Col. Sanders?” to avoid that mistake.
I am surprised that Drew, and, Luke, didn’t deduce that the correct response was “Who was Col. Harland Sanders?” Maybe like the Fort McHenry FInal Jeopardy, they thought it too obvious. Whatever the reason, they didn’t. Clickbait stories might come up. I may glance at them, as may others, but like the Jeopardy production team, I will pay them no mind.
Having read the story of Colonel Sanders at a local Taco Bell/KFC outlet, this was pretty easy. May or may not have gotten it otherwise.
Andy wrote, “Oftentimes, business-related Final Jeopardy clues stop champions in their tracks.” Didn’t a certain well-known champion have some confusion about H & R Block versus FedEX? No telling how many games he might have won if not for that missed FJ! He hasn’t done badly, though, since then.
Good job Drew on the ruanaway, rendering Final moot. My only two immediate thoughts were Sanders and Tom Parker. I thought Sanders was more likely so got it at home. Not at all the same as getting it on stage.
I immediately thought “Col. Sanders” and just took a moment to make sure nothing in the clue made him unlikely. I did not think of Tom Parker because of always thinking of him as a fraudulent “colonel”. However, I find a Louisiana governor had awarded him his the same as Harland Sanders’ from Kentucky. I think I felt that way because ‘Tom’ was a greedy unethical (and not as savvy as he thought he was) “businessman” [and Harland was pretty much the opposite]. I doubt I’m the only one who feels that way about him.
I did not know that “Colonel” in Col. Sanders was a honorary rank, nor that there are well-known specific States which bestow them.
I tried to think along the lines of “General …” (Electric, Motors, Mills) but didn’t get anywhere.
Incidentally, I also have a fascination with exotic fruits. I learned about jaboticaba aka Brazilian tree grape a few months ago. It cannot be commercially shipped fresh because it ferments too quickly. So I’ve resorted to buying some preserves online.
