Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Literature) for Tuesday, July 9, 2024 (Season 40, Game 217):
In one story he is enslaved by the Old Man of the Sea & uses apes to pick fruit so he can afford his fare back to Baghdad
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Kathy Davis, a chemistry professor from North Manchester, Indiana![]() |
Anna Paone, a stay-at-home mom from Sunnyside, New York![]() |
Isaac Hirsch, a customer support team lead from Burbank, California (4-day total: $100,586)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
In 1985, Mark Leinwand—who defeated Steve Hirsch—became the 20th player to win 4 games (and only the third to fail to win 5). Yesterday, Steve’s son Isaac became the 459th 4-time champion in the show’s history and is hoping to become 5-time champion #279 today. However, as always, there are two challengers hoping to stop Isaac from victory: Indiana professor Kathy Davis and New York stay-at-home mom Anna Paone.

Correct response: Who is Sinbad?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Sinbad the Sailor is a fictional sailor from Baghdad whose stories appear in some versions of the One Thousand and One Nights stories; generally, in the stories, he took seven voyages to different parts of the world. The story mentioned in today’s Final Jeopardy is from Sinbad’s fifth voyage.
In terms of how straightforward I think today’s clue is, as long as one recognizes Baghdad as the major clue here, and doesn’t see “Old Man of the Sea” and think Hemingway instead, players in studio and at home alike should not have too much difficulty landing on a correct response.

- A reminder that to go from an incorrect response to a correct one (or vice versa), twice the clue value is deducted.
- Isaac’s $120,187 is 108th all time in terms of adjusted 5-day totals.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Isaac $19,400 Anna $9,800 Kathy $3,800)
Isaac: Standard cover bet over Anna is $201. (Actual bet: $201)
Anna: To have any chance of winning today you have to bet at least $9,400. (Actual bet: $1,201)
Kathy: Bet no more than $3,400 here. However, I’d bet $0 and hope for Anna to get Final incorrect. (Actual bet: $0)

“Who is Sinbad?” This one was a gimme. I predict a triple get.
I went with the wrong tale. I said Ali Baba.
That’s what i said originally, then said Aladdin. Of course both were incorrect. But at least we weren’confused by the “Old Man and the Sea” reference, and, went with something from Hemmingway.
My brain figuratively exploded with all the changes announced beforeIssac wagered on DD2. I’m sure some peoplecould follow them all, I wasn’t one of them.
Two in a row! Good week so far.
The reference to Baghdad clearly indicated ‘A Thousand And One Nights’ and the sea reference narrowed it down to Sinbad.
No reason for Anna not to go all in since she’s not winning if she’s not correct.
But kudos to all of them for being on Jeopardy – something I can’t claim.
There’s maybe one good reason why she didn’t bet to “go for the win” right there.
Perhaps maybe Anna thought Isaac had a runaway game there. Because unless there’s more to the bet than what one thinks, there’s really no way to explain the logic in that decision.
okay, that’s a reason. But I wouldn’t call it a ‘good’ reason 🙂
As it turns out, Anna’s wagering “mistake” won her $1,000. Good for her…
I got the seafaring reference and went with Sindbad, as I would have spelled it.
I got this one wrong. Oh well. See what happens tomorrow.
I have never seen such a wild amount of score corrections before and it was quite something to watch unfold. I was thinking it might never end. 😉
Retro congrats to my near neighbor Isaac on win #5 and qualifying for the 2025 ToC.
See what happens tomorrow! 🙂
I live in Texas, and Spectrum cable was out in most of the state this afternoon when “Jeopardy!” airs. How many scoring corrections were there?
