Andy’s Weekly Thoughts (9/14): Should Some More Wagers Be Banned?

It’s time for a new week of editorial thoughts from the Jeopiverse!

  • Regarding the timing of these articles: If I feel I have something that I want to say, I will say it. The editorial will come out on the weekend at some point (so, either the Saturday or the Sunday). I don’t want to guarantee an editorial, though, because that might lead to more community drama in general—and I certainly want to see less.
  • Regarding Jeopardy and streaming: we’re getting very close to the 2-year mark of the partnership between Jeopardy! and TuneIn Radio. Considering that the show’s contract with Pluto just ended at the two-year mark, I am hoping that the TuneIn partnership continues, but I don’t know what’s ultimately going to happen.

  • I have been specifically asked the following question editorially in light of the wagering in Friday’s game: Should Jeopardy! ban all wagers that aren’t $5, $x99, $x00, or $x01? My answer to that is no; I don’t think that the show should make a blanket ban on every wager that does not fit the above. However, I do believe two things should happen: Firstly, I think that the show should “discourage” such behavior (the same way that the show “discouraged” contestants from betting for the tie in the contestant briefing pre-2014); secondly, I also think that prospective players should do more in terms of preparation on that front. Being that such wagers are generally premeditated, contestants should seriously consider researching their preferred wagers, just in case that number has an alternate meaning that they’re not aware of.
  • Over the past few months, I have made an overhaul of the prediction model; I am working on an article explaining the new system; however, the best timeline I plan on giving for its completion is Soon™.

  1. I think it’s a nice gesture to one’s home state to wager one’s area code, especially when the wager is not likely to affect one’s chances of winning (or losing). But I do agree that a contestant should research the possible connotations of a wager in advance.
    Also…wagering an odd amount may be strategic in some circumstances and, in my opinion, limiting wagering to predetermined currency values would not be in the contestant’s best interest.

  2. I would not be in favor of restricting bets to the numbers you mentioned Andy.

  3. I genrally understand why some Final Jeopardy wagers aren’t allowed. I’m aslo not in favor of more wagers not being allowed. James Holzhauer’s Final Jeopardy wagers (sometimes) included jokes based on the numbers. not allowing certain might take some of the fun of the wagers.
    Andy;
    In regards to the frequency of your “editorials.” You put it best. WHEN you feel you have something to say, you’ll do an “editorial.” Anything more could become just commenting for the sake of commenting.

  4. What numbers are already not allowed? I must live a very sheltered life, because I had no idea that random numbers could be offensive to anyone. Or have some secret meaning to someone. How would one even find out that sort of thing? Maybe Google would tell you……. but how many hours would it take to Google every possible number between 1 and, what, 100? 1000?

    • The initial banned list from 2018 was 14, 88, 1488, 420, 69, and 666. The first three because it’s coded hate speech, the fourth because of a drug reference, the fifth because of a spicy connotation, and the last because of its religious symbolism.

      • For the sake of a comment, if I was on the show and in FJ bet $666, there must be a reason for my bet, other than being a number for religious symbolism. Why would anyone be offended? People, stop being offended. No on being politically correct, which many people live by these days.
