Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Evan Suttell, a nonprofit program assistant originally from Lakewood, Ohio![]() |
Mark Palmere, an energy analyst from Sacramento, California (1-day total: $16,199)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
The final game of our opening week of Season 41 features defending champion Mark Palmere taking on West Virginia’s Hilary Glazer and Ohio’s Evan Suttell.
It was brought to my attention earlier in the week that Evan does have some collegiate quiz bowl experience, having played some time for Michigan State. That said, as I always say in these situations: quiz bowl is not Jeopardy and while quiz bowl experience is always nice, it is no guarantee of success—the show’s history is littered with one-and-done quiz bowlers.

Richard Starkey—best known worldwide as Ringo Starr, the drummer for The Beatles—was a sickly child; he had already recovered from peritonitis at the age of six when he contracted tuberculosis at the age of 13. While recovering at the sanatorium, he learned drums in a band at the hospital, basically created by the hospital to relieve their patients of boredom. From that point forward, Starr only wanted to be a drummer, and joined local Liverpool skiffle bands once he had recovered. Starr replaced Pete Best as the Beatles’ drummer in August 1962 and the rest is history.
I suspect that this clue will be very straightforward for most of the home viewers, but younger contestants and viewers might struggle more with this.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Seriously. As I’ve said in the past—many numbers have taken on alternative meanings that you might not want to be associated with. And while I personally have no issue with the number 304—all work is important—I think Hilary might want to have a do-over with her Final Jeopardy wager.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Evan $17,200 Mark $13,800 Hilary $800)
Mark: You’re within four-fifths of Evan’s score; your minimum bet should thus be $6,801. Your maximum bet should be $6,999. (Actual bet: $4,567)
Evan: Standard cover bet over Mark is $10,401. (Actual bet: $3,000)
Hilary: You can’t win tonight unless Mark and Evan both overbet significantly. (Actual bet: $304)

A British drummer who would’ve been a teen in 1953. Hmmmm…..who could that be?
Yeah, there are other possibilities, but Ringo was my guess even though I didn’t remember when he was knighted.
I regularly cringe at clues about bands or members of bands, 1970s and up. This came to me quickly.
Another day. Another straight forward Final Jeopardy. I didn’t know Ringo’s back story about where he learned to play drums. But when the “answer” came up, Ringo was the only drummer I could think of who fit the category. Ended this week 2 for 5. If you can maintain something close to that average in Baseball, you have a chance at a nice career.
Andy, your comment about Quiz Bowl not neccesarily relating to Jeopardy success. I’ve never seen a “Quiz Bowl” competition, would they be like TV quizes College Bowl, and/or high school equivalents, like It’s Academic in Chicago. (Other cities have had similar shows, using different titles)?
Yes, Evan did highschool “academic challenge” which is a tv show and also participated in his states competition. He also competed in college
I was on my school’s Academic Challenge team (as we called it in the Cleveland area), both on TV and in ‘league’ competition to qualify for states, and was on teams that competed in my university’s College Bowl qualifiers. “Jeopardy!” is a very different animal as you don’t have teammates to rely on (or be let down by), and with Academic Challenge, the TV program, each match had two rounds were teams were not competing on the buzzer against the other schools.
As a Boomer, this Final was quite easy and came to me right away. I suspect younger generations might have a more difficult time with this one.
304 is the area code for West Virginia where Hilary is from.
And phone calls to Chicago start 1-312… but that still led to a big misunderstanding a few years ago when a Chicago contestant bet $1312 on a Daily Double.
Numbers have multiple meanings, and you’re just better off these days not venturing anywhere that isn’t $5, $x99, $x00, or $x01.
I couldn’t think of the name off the top of my head but my first thought is the Beatles drummer.
I’d never heard of this “304” thing prior to now, but it’s funny because it unintentionally refers back to one of Ken Jennings’ responses during his initial long run. 🙂
When I saw the Final Jeopardy category, I thought this isn’t going to be good! Then we got the clue and knew that it had to be Ringo Starr. I wasn’t born until 1968 and wasn’t any kind of Beatles fan (or much allowed to listen to that kind of music at the time). Though my life moving on as an adult made me know this had to be a Beatle and I was nearly certain that Paul wasn’t their drummer and Ringo had to be.
2 for 5 for the week in FJ and I highly doubt I’ll maintain that winning percentage as we move on.
Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂
P.S. – When watching Monday Night Football on December 8, 1980 and hearing Howard Cosell live announcing the passing of John Lennon, I didn’t even know who John was at that time. Talk about a 12 year old having lived a sheltered life at that point, huh?
