Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Stars of the 20th Century) for Thursday, September 26, 2024 (Season 41, Game 14):

A 1927 N.Y. Times headline: “Witness testifies” this woman “rewrote play and insisted on the spicy scenes because city liked them”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Maddie Carwile, a healthcare program coordinator from New York, New York
Maddie Carwile on Jeopardy!
Alex Michev, an attorney from Richmond, Virginia
Alex Michev on Jeopardy!
David Erb, a puzzle designer from Seattle, Washington (3-day total: $90,754)
David Erb on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Despite David Erb receiving a bit of a scare in yesterday’s game from Drew Goins, he picked up victory #3 yesterday and is still shaping up to be one of the top players in Jeopardy history in terms of taking advantage of Daily Doubles. Today, he faces off against Alex Michev and Maddie Carwile in an attempt to take a very important fourth victory today.

Before becoming the film star of the 1930’s very much known for her double entendres, Mae West spent significant time in the New York vaudeville and stage scene. She was arrested in 1927 on morals and obscenity charges surrounding her 1926 play; the New York Times article also said its backers wanted a police raid because of the increased publicity surrounding such a move. The city certainly did like the spicy scenes, though: 325,000 people saw the play between April 1926 and the February 1927 raid, while the arrest and 10-day jail term served by West only served to enhance her national profile.

David: Bet no more than $200 to stay ahead of Alex if he makes the minimum cover bet over Maddie. (Actual bet: $123)

Alex: Standard cover bet over Maddie is $11,801. (Actual bet: $12,000)

Maddie: Betting between $4,201 and $5,099 both defends against the biggest range of Alex’s bets and keeps David locked out. (Actual bet: $2,200)

14 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Thursday, September 26, 2024"

  1. Thinking of an actress of that time who may have earlier been on stage, I went with Fay Wray.

  2. I guessed correctly, because I remembered that Mae West was a playwright before she was an actress.

  3. This was one of those situations where missing DD3 was advantageous for Maddie putting her in a close second (instead of being narrowly leading) going into the triple stumper Final Jeopardy. But one never knows on any given day. I do commend her on wagering to keep David from winning no matter what happened.

  4. All I could come up with was Zelda

  5. Robert J. Fawkes | September 26, 2024 at 6:26 pm |

The only reason I was able to get this one was because, as a young man, I had such a crush on Mae West. When thinking of a woman from that era who might like “spicey scenes,” Mae West came immediately to mind.

  6. Mae West, Rudolph Valentino, and “Fatty” Arbuckle all from that era with interesting lives. I believe there was a previous Final about the man who had the historical (and hysterical) funeral crowd and Arbuckle was tried for murder three straight times on the west coast (and at the time he was the first millionaire screen star).

  7. This was a Final jeopardy where you eihter knew about the story the “answer” clue referenced, or, from the fact the “answer” clue gave could guess the correct respnse. i neither knew, or, could guess.
Speaking non literakky, was David beenomg featured in clickbait stories the ‘kiss pf death’ to his Jeopardy winning streak/ in any case, it’s to imagine that we won’t see him next in a Champions Wild card tourbwnebt.

  8. Mae West seemed like the obvious choice. She was pretty smart, and good at self-promotion.

  9. I could only guess Lauren Bacall, but she wasn’t born in time for this, now that I’ve looked that up. 1 for 4 for the week and 3 for 14 on the season. Nothing special about that!

A very nice win by Maddie, but I was honestly hoping for David’s run to last longer. I imagine that we’ll see him in Champions Wildcard or perhaps a direct route to the ToC itself due to seeing that there might not be enough Champions of 4 wins or more come cutoff time to get to the 27 needed.

Maddie is the 2nd lady champion of the season and they are practically neighbors, as one is from New York, NY and the other from Brooklyn, NY.

    Have a great Friday everyone!

  10. I came up with Mae West without actually remembering having known those particular facts, it just sounded like something she would do! (And the best I recalled, 1927 was within her heyday.)

  11. Congrats to Maddie on making what turned out be smart DD and Final Jeopardy bets.
