Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Famous Women) for Monday, September 9, 2024 (Season 41, Game 1):
Before her death in 2022, she pledged her collection of more than 200 pins to the National Museum of American Diplomacy
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Amanda White, a strategy consultant from Seattle, Washington
|
Adam Reiffen, a Naval officer from San Diego, California
|
Rachel Bradley, an ESL instructor from Greenbelt, Maryland (1-day total: $23,597)
|
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After a six-week break—the same general length of summer break that has happened since 1987—Rachel Bradley returns in the Season 41 premiere to defend her title. In her victory back on July 26, the Maryland ESL teacher had a slim lead going into Final Jeopardy. Today, she faces off against Adam Reiffen and Amanda White.
Due to the NFL game on ABC this evening, there are some changes to the airing schedule in some markets. As always, check local listings, though Matt Carberry does have his usual Google sheet with further information regarding tonight, Tuesday, and Thursday.
It should also be noted that tonight is Ryan Seacrest’s debut as the host of Wheel of Fortune. In a topic that I’m sure I’ll have to remind analysts about multiple times over the coming months, this will very likely result in a strong showing year-over-year for Jeopardy‘s sister show in the ratings department and the eventual panic that will result in some corners of the Internet over this is going to be misguided.

Correct response: Who is Madeleine Albright?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Madeleine Albright, the first woman to serve as Secretary of State of the United States, had been called an “unparalleled serpent” by Iraqi media during her time as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as she was pressuring the U.N. to adopt sanctions against Iraq. In response to this, Albright wore a piece of costume jewelry—a snake pin—to her next meeting regarding Iraq. From that point forward, her pins became a major part of her diplomatic message; including antagonizing Vladimir Putin over his Chechnya policy with a monkey pin representing “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”.
Stories about the collection can be found at Read My Pins at the U.S. State Department website.
Personally, I was not aware about Albright’s pin collection and I think that this was a fun learning experience for me to start Season 41. Thank you, writers!

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Amanda definitely seemed nervous, and I’m sure missing a Daily Double on her home state’s capital didn’t help her nerves.
- In case you missed it, you can find a multicam view of the opening minutes of this episode at the show’s YouTube channel.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Adam $10,600 Rachel $8,000 Amanda $4,000)

Adam: Standard cover bet over Rachel is $5,401. (Actual bet: $5,401)
Amanda: You have to be correct to win–you might as well go all in. (Actual bet: $4,000)

Got it. Remembered Madeline A. always seemed to be wearing a pin.
kudos on everyone’s final wagers in final jeopardy. Thanks again, Andy for running this website.
Got it instantly. I always followed what pins she was wearing to meet foreign dignitaries. The subtle shade in some of them was beautiful to watch.
Are there any readers of this site that are in Learned League? I would like to discuss if I could get an invitation. Thank you.
I had no idea on this FJ. I’m not quite old enough to remember this (I was a preteen at that time), and I don’t really follow politics… which is why I’m here early, because the first five ads during Jeopardy were all political attack ads and that overloaded and depressed me, so I turned it off. I guess I’ll be refraining from watching for the next two months accordingly, because I don’t want to support a station that overwhelms a program I like with that much negativity.
Thanks once again for your site, Andy – I will most definitely be following along here.
I said Ginsbetg. Sorry.
Andy, would it be possible to record the show so you can fast forward the commercials? You wouldn’t have to miss the show this way. And you could only have to wait about 15 minutes to start watching the show.
Andy P.! Hello!
I have taken a low tech approach to the ‘politica attack ads’ on my TV [with an antenna – no cable or fiber or internet] = I mute them and look away.
As I said low tech, but pretty effective.
🙂
Let’s see, a woman who died in 2022 and was involved in diplomacy. Couldn’t be Hillary Clinton, she’s still alive. Couldn’t be Shirley Temple Black because she died much longer ago than that. That left Madeleine Albright as my one and only choice. I hadn’t remembered anything about the pins so that’s how I went for it.
The correct person was who I thought of immediately (even though I had barely heard any of the pin info, quite some time ago) but I just could not come up with her name, especially after getting the name ‘Margaret Mead’ stuck in my head even though I knew for certain that she was not who I was thinking of.
I knew this one. I read her book about the history of her pins/brooches.
In Chicago, Jeopardy was preempted just as Ken was going to check the players “Questions” and wagers in Final Jeopardy.
My initial response was who was Shirley Temple Black. Checked that on Google, seen that she passed before 2022. So my second guess was Ms. Albright. Of course when I Googled her, I spelled her first name wrong, but despite that, Google confirmed that the former Secretary of State did leaves us in 2022.
Came here to the Jeopardy Fan, and, found my second guess was right. Don’t think I should claim it as a win, becuase Think! had stopped playing by the time I checked Google the first time.
I’ll be checking out the host of American Idol, and, American Top 40, in his new role as the host of Wheel of FOrtune.
I may not get any more this season, but I got this one.
Awesome Ted!
Welcome back to Season 41! Thank you for all that you do Andy!
And I being a Poli Sci major better have not missed this and thankfully, I nailed it nearly immediately. 1 for 1 to start the new season on FJ works for me.
2 weeks from today (September 23rd) I’ll be going to my 3rd taping of Jeopardy! Can’t wait! It’ll be just as fun as the first 2 times.
See what tomorrow has for us! 🙂 (after the debate) – Thank you for Matt Carberry’s spreadsheet to let me know when I get the show in the LA market.
