Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Signs & Symbols) for Tuesday, September 10, 2024 (Season 41, Game 2):

Via a diplomatic conference in 2005, a diamond was added to supplement these 2 symbols, thought by some to have religious meaning

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Will Weiss on Jeopardy!
Mary Catherine French, a writer, editor & research assistant from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Mary Catherine French on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Day 2 of Season 41 features a Naval officer in Adam Reiffen as our returning champion, who took the lead he did not relinquish on clue #2 of yesterday’s game, defeating defending champion Rachel Bradley. Today, he faces off against Mary Catherine French and Will Weiss.

It should be noted that due to the Presidential debate this evening, there are going to be pre-emptions. Make sure to check your local listings! In case this is helpful for you, Matt Carberry has compiled a Google sheet detailing many schedule changes nationwide.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

While the Red Cross and Red Crescent were generally believed to neutral symbols, there were many who believed that the cross contained Christian connotations (or the crescent Muslim connotations) and thus were unwilling to abide by the Geneva Convention requirements that their protected medical personnel, buildings, and equipment depict one of those symbols. Thus, a 2005 diplomatic conference added the Red Crystal—a diamond—to the cross and crescent already protected.

I suspect that the show will receive undue criticism today online from viewers who believe that deliberate obfuscation somehow makes for an invalid trivia question. Curveballs exist, and sometimes you have to face a curveball if you enjoy trivia. Not every ball is going to be pitched straight down the middle of the plate for you.

10 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, September 10, 2024"

  1. Hi Andy, could you clarify what deliberate obfuscation some people might see in this clue? It seems straightforward to me

    • There felt like there was a bit of a “what exactly is going on here?” quality to this clue to me.

      • I agree with you. I’m thinking their biggest obfuscation was not saying “on flags” as I am not sure that would have made the clue much easier since “flags” could mean individual symbols on individual flags (which was the case here) or all three symbols on multiple identical flags.

I had assumed that it meant that the diamond symbol “joined” (in/on the same flag, seal, crest or whatever) the two symbols which the correct response should be. I guessed “dove and olive branch”. [I was thinking maybe on the UN flag — not remembering a dove on it, but thinking perhaps there is a small one somewhere.]

  2. I guessed crescent and star. Oh, well.

  3. The FJ seemed straightforward enough not to be a triple-stumper.

  4. Like it seems all commenters here (so far) this Final Jeopardy “answer” was a curve ball that got past me. The fact that a cressant, used by many Arab countries on their flags, could be considered a religious symbol, was news to me. Obviously a cross, even the Swiss style one (don’t have a better description for it,) could be one. Though I don’t know of any Christian church that uses that style cross.
This was a Final Jeopardy that if you had an insight as to what the “Answer” was referring to, you could come up with the correct response. Tougher than yesterday’s Final Jeopardy, but then tomorrow’s might be a hanging curve ball in the middle of everyone’s strike zone.

  5. I am pretty sure that I have never heard about that 2005 diplomatic conference or its result. I HAD heard about the 2nd “version” with the crescent instead of a cross, but had only heard about that within the last five or so years even though it was created back in the early 20th century. I believe if when I heard that had been within the last 6 months, I MIGHT of thought of that when hearing the FJ clue.

Since they call the newest version a crystal, I wondered if it would be less than 100 years before they begin getting complaints that it, too, is religious — Wiccan. 😉 However, it looks less like a crystal than a baseball diamond does, much less looking like an actual diamond. It is essentially a square on edge (also referred to as a “frame”). Despite a lot of internet searches, I cannot find that it is actually in use anywhere but by Israel and that, actually, it was Israel who made the cross&crescent complaint. Too bad when the first complaints came in from the Ottoman Empire about the cross they didn’t just SWITCH it to a red “band-aid”😉.

  6. I could only come up with Trumpet and Horn as my FJ answer. 1 for 2 to start the new season. 😉

I don’t know, I had no problem with this final and figured out what they were looking for right away. shrugs
