Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Literary Monuments) for Tuesday, November 12, 2024 (Season 41, Game 47):
A 112-foot-tall monument in a Madrid plaza depicts a writer seated above bronze statues of these 2 characters
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Jonathan Fox, a staffing capacity manager from Plymouth, Massachusetts![]() |
Kathleen Clark, an English teacher originally from Stamford, Connecticut![]() |
Joey DeSena, a development engineer from Raleigh, North Carolina (1-day total: $17,497)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Joey DeSena is your new champion after a strong victory in yesterday’s game; he had enough of a lead going into Final Jeopardy such that he was able to survive a Triple Stumper without losing victory. Today, he faces off against a pair of New Englanders in Connecticut’s Kathleen Clark and Massachusetts’s Jonathan Fox.
In other Jeopardy! news, I am still feeling concerned that a number of fans are falling for what is still, at the time of this article’s publication, unconfirmed speculation based on a tabloid article regarding the show’s return to streaming in 2025. (I say “returning” because the show has had a streaming home in the past, with past episodes appearing on Netflix.)

According to Madrid’s official tourism website, King Alfonso XIII of Spain commissioned a monument in the Plaza de España of Miguel de Cervantes in 1915 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the publication of the second part of Don Quixote (which was set in what is now the autonomous community of Castilla–La Mancha, immediately south of Madrid). The fact that Cervantes is in stone and that Quixote and his squire are in bronze was a deliberate demarcation between the real and the fictional.
I think the most difficult part of this Final—and this, I believe, is both by design and valid—is thinking of the correct response quickly enough to be able to get both characters’ names written down within 30 seconds.

This is the type of Final that I’m EXTREMELY proud of myself for getting – I likely wouldn’t have been able to throw out a guess just a year ago!
Makes up a little bit for missing Final yesterday in my wheelhouse category, doesn’t it? 🙂
I got this one. I recently made a trip to Spain and on the city walk tours, saw many references made to the author. Although I didn’t see the monument, Cervantes immediately came to mind.
My guess was right. I was worried that it may have been Quixote and his horse ( forgot its name) but figured that would have been an unfair question for J! so I went with the obvious
Rocinante [I have a thing for horses.] I had had to re-read the clue to find out it referenced an author and two characters, not a character and two animals. I really don’t know why I’d even thought the latter at all unless maybe I heard “writer” as “rider”.
Had it half right, got Don Quixote, but couldn’t have told you the other one in five minutes.
Same here. [Though I was not even confident that it wasn’t about the characters of some other Spanish author I’d never heard of.]
That is one of the “who else” cases. I was not sure about the spelling of Sancho’s last name, but, apparently, it was not required.
An implied Spanish author, over what is implied are his characters? If you even miminally literally aware, this was NOT an Impossible Dream to get. Reading/Listening to today’s Final Jeopardy clue (answer) I sais “Who is Don Quixote (and) Sancho Panza? And, even though it wasn’t needed, even remembered the name of their creator, Cervantes.
I should have had a shot at getting yesterday’s Final Jeopardy as well, but let myself get distracted when the clue (answer) was revealed.
Jepardy Bar League? Sponsored Jeopardy themed trivia competition at your local “watering hole”?
Clueless, I went with two of my favorite literary characters, Hansel and Gretel.
With respect to Andy’s comment, “…quickly enough to be able to get both characters’ names written down within 30 seconds.” I knew the correct response quickly enough in my head but I’m not sure I could have written it out fully in the time allotted. Looks as though it would have been okay if I hadn’t finished writing Sancho’s name. What would have happened if a contestant had started writing Sancho Panza and didn’t finish the Panza part?
Shouldn’t Joey have been prompted to be more specific after his ‘church’ response?
After all, his response wasn’t wrong, just incomplete.
Respectfully, to say that the Metropolitan Tabernacle was the first-ever church would be laughable.
Would you please forward a request to Jeopardy? When they have letters to be unscrambled, it would be helpful if they kept the scrambled letters on the screen for us to see. I assume the contestants get to look at the letters, so it would be nice if we did as well (for more than a second or two).
Well shoot! Maybe I should have gotten this, but it didn’t come to me in the allotted 30 seconds. Oh well! 0 for 2 for the week and 6 for 47 for the season.
Retro congrats to Joey on win #2! Will he get #3 tomorrow? I will be tuned in to find out!
