Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Poetry & Places) for Wednesday, November 13, 2024 (Season 41, Game 48):
It’s the geographic word in the title of a Robert Burns poem about “the mountains …covered with snow…the straths & green valleys below”
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Lois Dioro, a Realtor from West Haven, Connecticut
Evan Dorey, a data analytics director from Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Joey DeSena, a development engineer from Raleigh, North Carolina (2-day total: $44,698)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Joey DeSena is now a 2-day champion with winnings over $40,000. In going for victory #3 today, he faces off against Ontario’s Evan Dorey and Connecticut’s Lois Dioro.
Yesterday, on Inside Jeopardy, it was announced that the fields for Champions Wildcard and the Tournament of Champions would be unveiled. Honestly, I just hope that it’s done in a way that doesn’t make two or three weeks’ worth of games an anticlimax. I know that a lot of fans really enjoy the anticipation of “How many games will this champion win?” and this, in my opinion, certainly risks ruining that feeling for a few weeks—to the point where it might not outweigh the advantage of knowing who’s in the field at this point.

These lines are from Robert Burns’s 1789 poem (and song) “My Heart’s in the Highlands”; the entire stanza from the clue is “Farewell to the mountains, high-covered with snow, / Farewell to the straths and green valleys below; / Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods, / Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.”
I don’t really have much else to say about this Final; I guess a way in if you aren’t familiar already with the poem would be, “What geographical area would Robert Burns most likely want to write about?” We’ll see how today’s Final plays.

(Categories: Great Women In Sports; Adult Contemporary Lit; Keeping Warm; Also A Beverage Brand; It’s A Small World; After All)
In a segment that saw 7 incorrect responses, Evan doubled up just before the break with the Daily Double. After 15 clues, Evan led with $4,000 to Lois’s $0 and Joey’s minus $200.
Lois is a believer in the Church of Springsteen.
Evan has grandparents who came from Newfoundland and Japan and who met in Toronto.
Joey has filled in as a bar trivia host with a favorite category of “Things Ken Jennings Got Wrong”.
Both Joey and Lois got out of their respective holes, but Evan still led after 30 clues.
(Categories: A Piece Of History; Colleges & Universities; From The Greek; Minerals; Nothing To See Here; You’ll Learn To Adapt)
Things got very interesting in Double Jeopardy—first, Evan dropped $2,000 on DD2. Then, after a long search, Lois found DD3 and bet to take a small lead. Then, Even retook the lead rebounding a mispronunciation from Joey. Lois got the final clue of Double Jeopardy correct to tie the game going into Final Jeopardy.
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Evan 19 correct 2 incorrect
Lois 15 correct 3 incorrect
Joey 11 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 6 (0 today).
Scores going into Final:
Evan $14,600
Lois $14,600
Joey $7,400
While Evan gave the singular, it was accepted by the judges—and that makes him the new Jeopardy champion! He’ll be back tomorrow to defend.
Tonight’s results:
Joey $7,400 – $7,201 = $199 (What is Moor??? It was fun!) Evan $14,600 + $14,600 = $29,200 (What highland?) (1-day total: $29,200)
Lois $14,600 – $2,600 = $12,000 (What are is Scotland?)

I agree with the judges’s decision to accept Evan’s response. It’s a geographic word that is contained in the title of the requisite poem. It should also be noted that disputes on this point will not be entertained in the comments this evening, as per the Site Comment Policy.
If Joey’s local doesn’t have a category titled “Things Joey DeSena Got Wrong On Jeopardy”, I would be very disappointed.
Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Evan $14,600 Lois $14,600 Joey $7,400)
Joey: Any bet that isn’t all $7,400 is okay here. (Actual bet: $7,201)
Evan: Because you do have to cover Joey as well, you should probably go all in here. (Actual bet: $14,600)
Lois: Because you do have to cover Joey as well, you should probably go all in here. (Actual bet: $2,600)
I guessed Hibernia, confusing Scotland and Ireland. An internet search reveals that “Is Hibernian Scottish or Irish?” is a frequent question. We’ll see how the contestants respond.
Being absolutely unfamilar with Robert Burns works, I had no chance at this Final Jeopardy, unless I made a wild guess, Even then, I don’t know that I would’ve come up with highlands.
I am familiar with some of Robert Burns’ work but it has been a long time and I did not recognize this one, so I guessed Loch [while ‘THINK’ing, I forgot the WORD was to have been in the title as I was just going for “What geographical place would Robert Burns be likely to write about?”].
Great minds think alike 😉! I could credit my using the Scottish Gaelic word “loch” for “lake” to my supposedly being related to Robert Burns (per a family tree researched [but no subsequent DNA confirmation that I know of] and published by my grandparent’s relative), but if true, I should be ashamed at not knowing even more about him and his works.
Not familiar with the poem, but I was in the Highlands last month, and the description is certainly apt. Lucky guesses still count, though.

So for Joey, “The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men Gang aft agley,”
“If Joey’s local doesn’t have a category titled “Things Joey DeSena Got Wrong On Jeopardy”, I would be very disappointed.”
Don’t worry, it’s already being planned – luckily I have a lot of material to pull from!
You’re being modest Joey….you have much more material to pull from in being correct! Congrats on being a 2 time Jeopardy Champion!
I guessed lakes….0 for 3 on the week and 6 for 48 for the season. 😉
