Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After a Final Jeopardy ruling in yesterday’s game that I still believe was 100% correct—after all, as another recapper put it yesterday, a fruit in the title of a John Steinbeck work could be “grape” as well as “grapes”—Evan Dorey, whose grandfather hails from Newfoundland, is your returning champion. Today, he faces off against a retired dentist in Steve Czekala and a former 401k processor in Stephanie Asalone.

In the battle between the AFL and NFL in the mid-1960s, the two football leagues were still trying to pre-empt each other into new markets. In order to prevent the AFL from putting a team in Atlanta in 1966, the NFL partially pushed up its expansion plans by a year to put a team in Georgia. Needing a second expansion team to prevent an uneven number of teams, it was eventually decided to place an expansion team in New Orleans. While the franchise had been technically awarded a week prior, then-NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle was convinced to delay the official announcement of the New Orleans Saints until November 1, so as to coincide with All Saints Day.
As a sports fan, I found this to be a relatively straightforward clue. However, I also would not be surprised for this to be a category that causes some more unorthodox Final Jeopardy wagers—even though the general community consensus on this point is, based on the last two decades’ worth of data, is that the category name is often a red herring as to the subject of the clue and should usually be disregarded when discussing potential Final Jeopardy strategy. (And, to that point, I didn’t particularly appreciate the shade thrown a couple of weeks ago on Inside Jeopardy—I simply want to give prospective players advice on how to increase their chances of winning, and we as a community should not be discouraging that.)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- Sometimes I need to remind myself of this as well: While I do like to give advice here on improving one’s win chances, contestants are welcome to play this game however they would like once they reach the Alex Trebek Stage. And that makes the game more exciting and more interesting.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Evan $14,400 Steven $9,800 Stephanie $8,100)
Evan: Standard cover bet over Stephen is $5,201. (Actual bet: $5,600)
Steven: You’re in Stratton’s Dilemma—you can’t both cover Stephanie and win a Triple Stumper. The cover bet is $6,401, though I might give serious consideration to a bet of $600 or less here, considering how Stephanie played the last 10 clues of Double Jeopardy. (Actual bet: $7,401)
Stephanie: To have any chance of victory, you. have to bet at least $1,100. I’d limit my bet here to $4,700, though, in case Steven covers. (Actual bet: $6,000)

Found this one easy. Even if someone isn’t familiar with the NFL, it’s possible to guess.
I wonder if ‘Saints’ without New Orleans would be acceptable.
New Orleans Saints. Quick get when thinking of team histories.
Well, contrary to perhaps others my age in 1966, I was 11 years old when this took place, and I certainly was not into sports at all, until I was 30 in 1985. Perhaps in my sports research, I may have come up with this information. Great FJ topic for today.
I got this one based on All Saints Day rather than knowing when the New Orleans Saints came into existence. I did recall that they were not a member of the old guard of NFL teams but didn’t have a specific year in mind for when they joined the league.
I didm’t understand this Final Jeopardy until after I realizedthat november 1 is All Saints Day in the Roman Catholic calender/ Then the correct response of the New Orleans Saints made sense.
I guessed the Minnesota Twins
See my reply to you below. I had a flub in my e-mail address [not really a typo, just a computer behavior problem that I suspected had happened but could not make it show it to me so went ahead and clicked to post it] and after being given an error message, I did not realize that the site had switched my post to a stand-alone instead of a reply.
I associate November 1 primarily with the Day of the Dead, and no fitting name of a sports team came to mind. 🙂 Seeing the category, I would have bet $0, anyway.
Having been an avid sports fan back in 1966 as well as now, I remember when the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints joined the NFL. I was big into the then Baltimore Colts and Johnny Unitas so this was particularly easy for me. I always thought it was great that the Saints joined the league on All Saints Day, too. Congratulations to Stephanie for being the only one of the contestants to put it together that the Saints would have been the most fitting team to join on November 1, All Saints Day. I thought this was a rather clever clue.
Congrats Stephanie from one Elk County fan to another!
Well, I didn’t know that November 1st was All Saints Day for sure, so that didn’t help me in the least. I could only come up with the Miami Dolphins. I think that they started play in the AFL in 1968 and thought it was possible that the team was born on 11/01/1966. Guess not!
0 for 4 for the week and 6 for 49 for the season. 1 for a whopper of a cold that has kept me out of work yesterday and today. 🙁
Was that due to the “twin” ‘6’s in the date? [I knew that was based on the “Twin Cities” of Minneapolis–Saint Paul and you presumably do, too, but I thought maybe you thought it could be due to both.]
If someone had asked me when is All Saints Day, I knew it was November 1st, but I’m not familiar enough to recognize from the opposite direction and am not a football fan. Even when not a football fan one cannot escape hearing a lot about the NFL, so I was aware of the New Orleans Saints, but assumed they were named based on “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In” having been played a lot in NOLA parades (at least in their famous funeral parades).
The first sentence doesn’t exactly make since because this comment started as a reply to Ron’s comment of “I guessed the Minnesota Twins”, but the site switched it to a stand-alone post after giving an error message.
