Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Renaissance Men) for Friday, November 8, 2024 (Season 41, Game 45):

In a letter he wrote, “On August 7, 1501 …we determined that the new land was not an island but a continent”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Rachel Marcus, a writer & consultant from New York, New York
Rachel Marcus on Jeopardy!
Ross Dickson, a research consultant from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Ross Dickson on Jeopardy!
Susan Stumme, a journalist from Arlington, Virginia (1-day total: $12,600)
Susan Stumme on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Being the only player to get Final Jeopardy correct usually works out well for a player, and that was true for Susan Stumme last night as she dethroned a 5-day champion in Greg Jolin. Today, she faces off against a Ross and a Rachel—Ross Dickson from Halifax and Rachel Marcus from New York.

In 1501, after Pedro Álvares Cabral had discovered present-day Brazil after going off-course during a voyage around Africa to India, Amerigo Vespucci was sent by the Portuguese specifically to investigate this landmass—specifically to determine if the line was east of the demarcation point of the Treaty of Tordesillas with Spain. His voyages to the Americas became widely known throughout Europe after his letter to Lorenzo de’ Medici, from which the quote in today’s Final Jeopardy clue was taken. Eventually, the two New World continents—North America and South America—were named after Vespucci.

9 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, November 8, 2024"

  1. At least I start and end the week on a get.

I was thinking Columbus at first, but then I realized that he was horrible at geography and thought he had found India, so my brain quickly went to Vespucci, as that seemed more appropriate for someone who used the word “continent” in a letter.

If I had pulled Kevlar yesterday, I’d have had my second ever clean sweep… but hey, 4/5 is nothing to sneeze at!

  2. I was close on getting Amerigo, but not quite. As for yesterday’s (Thursday’s) televised game, it was the Wednesday game, so our ABC affiliate is now behind one day on Jeopardy!! I hope being one day behind does not last too long!!!

  3. I’m glad that I did not fall into the Columbus trap and thought of Vespucci.

  4. I also thought of Columbus and Vespucci, and decided on the latter because the question/Columbus answer felt like a shiny little trap to me.

  5. I fell into the Columbus “trap” like today’s two leaders going into Final Jeopardy. Hindsight I should have have remembered that Columbus didn’t realise that he landed on what is now known as the Americas, and, not India, at least not at first. But, also in hindsight, I knew Vespuuci as a cartogher, didn’t know that he had voyaged to the continets now named after him. So, ended the weekone for five. Better than finishing nothing for five.

When I was in school, Columbus got all the attention and publicity with Vespucci being somewhat of an afterthought. That made me more interested in Vespucci and I took a liking to him. Because of that, I was able to get this final rather easily. Did other Boomers and pre-Boomers have that experience in their school days?

  7. Myron Rushetzky | November 8, 2024 at 7:46 pm |

Ken’s Ross – Rachel – Susan – Love Triangle – Friends line. That’s why Ken is the GOAT!

  8. This aired on Saturday for me here in SoCal and I barely made it home in time to watch due to train issues coming back from the hockey game in Downtown Los Angeles.

I went to Columbus immediately! 1 for 5 for the week and 6 for 45 for the season. .133 batting average. Pretty bad!
