Warning: This page contains spoilers for the January 6, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category 21st Century Business) for Monday, January 6, 2025 (Season 41, Game 86):

An early version of this app was called Matchbox but that name was too similar to another company that offered the same service

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Drew Goins, a journalist from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi
Drew Goins on Jeopardy!
Steve Miller, a retired medical transcriptionist from Eugene, Oregon
Steve Miller on Jeopardy!
Jonquil Garrick-Reynolds, a theatrical wardrobe technician from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Jonquil Garrick-Reynolds on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Week 2 of Winter 2025’s Second Chance competition begins with another set of three semifinals. Our players today are Jonquil Garrick-Reynolds of Ottawa, who nearly defeated Drew Basile on Day 2 of Drew’s run back in June, Steve Miller of Oregon, who was leading 4-day champion Amir Kakirde going into Final Jeopardy back in May, and Hawaiʻi’s Drew Goins, who put up 22 correct responses back in September against David Erb.

Tinder, the ubiquitous online dating app of the last decade, was founded in 2012 and originally called Matchbox. However, due to the similarity of Matchbox to the already-existing dating site Match.com, it was renamed to Tinder prior to launch. The smartphone action of “swiping” was used to match with other users—swiping right to like and swiping left to dislike—and became the most well-known feature of the app, with “swipe right” entering common usage.

I get the sense that this Final Jeopardy clue is going to receive undue criticism from the Reddit crowd that this clue is too easy, who may fail to remember that not every Jeopardy! viewer is as terminally online as they are. Yes, I do suspect that this clue will be easier for any generation that is millennial or younger, but I also suspect that older generations—who do comprise the vast majority of the show’s viewing audience— will struggle more to get this clue correct.

Steve found DD2 and pulled himself back into contention with a correct response, doubling his score. However, Drew’s rebound of the game’s only incorrect response—on a $2,000 clue—led to his finding DD3. His bet of $5,000 wasn’t enough to give him a runaway going into Final, as Steve played well to keep himself within 50% of Drew’s score.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Drew 30 correct 0 incorrect
Steve 15 correct 1 incorrect
Jonquil 11 correct 0 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 26 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Drew $33,400
Steve $18,400
Jonquil $9,800

Everyone got this Final correct as Drew added an emoji to punctuate an absolute 🔥 performance. He’s a finalist and will be back Thursday and Friday.

Tonight’s results:

Jonquil $9,800 + $0 = $9,800 (What is Tinder?)
Steve $18,400 + $15,001 = $33,401 (What is Tinder?)
Drew $33,400 + $3,401 = $36,801 (What is Tindr? 🔥) (Finalist)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Viewers are reminded that the show’s rules, which have been posted on this point specifically for years, state that responses do not need to be spelled perfectly, but must still be phonetically correct. “Tindr” is pronounced identically to “Tinder” and Drew is 100% the rightful winner of this game. Comments on this point are always out of order.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Drew $33,400 Steve $18,400 Jonquil $9,800)

Jonquil: Normally, this would be a “bet big” situation in the race for second. But Steve has to bet big himself to have a chance of passing Drew. His minimum is $11,600, so you should bet no more than $2,999 to stay ahead of him if he’s incorrect. (Actual bet: $0)

Steve: Bet at least $11,600 to have any chance of winning. However, you might as well go all in to ensure that Drew has done the math properly. (Actual bet: $15,001)

Drew: Standard cover bet over Steve is $3,401. (Actual bet: $3,401)

  1. Not sure if I’d heard this before and it was in my subconscious or just guessed correctly.

  2. Count me in as someone too old for today’s FJ. I thought that Matchbox was a restaurant specializing in sliders.

    • Glenn Sutton | January 6, 2025 at 11:13 am |

Also too old for this one. I thought Matchbox was a Carl Perkins song covered by the Beatles or those toy cars that were never quite as cool as Hot Wheels.

  3. Katerina E. | January 6, 2025 at 10:27 am |

First thought of OK Cupid, but thought that was more of a site than an app, then thought of Grindr. I was about to commit to Grindr when I thought “what’s the Grindr for straight people?” It took a second or two from there to come up with “Tinder” and then the connection to “Matchbox” made sense and I committed to the answer. I think the fact that I thought of a dating website before an app puts me pretty firmly in Generation X.

    • We too thought the gay guy must have been thinking “what’s the Grindr for straight people?” …Tindr.

  4. I’m old but guessed it correctly, though I wasn;t sure it wasn’t right. Match just reminded me of matchmaker. It’s been written about enough for me to have heard of it.

  5. well, congrats to those who predicted Drew Goins’ to win.

RE Carl Perkins, Matchbox, this video may be of interest:

  6. Got it very easily, even though I’ve never touched a dating app in my life… and I’m a senior in high school, so why would I need to? 😉

Easily the best game of the season – well done to all three players, and congratulations to Drew for advancing! He’s definitely gonna be a force to be reckoned with in the CWC, should he be able to make it there!

  7. Thanks for the acknowledgement that some of us are not interminably immersed in internet activity.

  8. Even though I know next to nothing about dating apps (70+ married male) I got this Final Jeopardy, just reasoned what is the name of a dating app close to the name matchbox, Came up with Tinder. Was pleasantly surprised to rinw out I was right.

Sorry, Andy, not everyone from older generations is going to struggle with this one. As soon as I saw “Matchbox,” my mind went to Match and then Tinder. Seemed pretty obvious to me even though I have never used a dating app and was born when Truman was President. There are enough references to Tinder in our social culture to make it well-known even to non-users and older folks. This figured to be a triple get and was.

  10. I’m older generation and that was the only dating app that came to mind, so it was easy for me.

  11. I was thinking about Dropbox and cloud storage apps. Oops again.
