Today’s Final Jeopardy – Tuesday, January 7, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the January 7, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Facts About Countries) for Tuesday, January 7, 2025 (Season 41, Game 87):

It has 40,000 people & a workforce of 42,000, more than half commuting from nearby, including Vorarlberg state in a neighbor country

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Josh Heit, a government relations professional from Silver Spring, Maryland
Josh Heit on Jeopardy!
Zoe Grobman, a therapist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Zoe Grobman on Jeopardy!
Enzo Cunanan, a student from Orlando, Florida
Enzo Cunanan on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today is Semifinal #2 of Week 2 of Winter 2025’s Second Chance play, and this semifinal features Enzo Cunanan, who played a very strong game against Adriana Harmeyer back in June, Zoe Grobman, who had an excellent performance against eventual ToCer Rishabh Wuppalapati, and Josh Heit, who I described as “one of the most obvious Second Chance picks ever” after he lost a tiebreaker to Drew Basile.

It’s been a bit of a busy time in Jeopardy!-land, and this week gets even busier: in addition to three episodes of Pop Culture Jeopardy! dropping on Prime Video tomorrow morning, Celebrity Jeopardy starts tomorrow at 9:00 PM Eastern (8:00 Central) on ABC. There seems to have been a dearth of promotion for Season 3 on both Jeopardy! and ABC’s part, though: as of publication time, there is still no minisite available anywhere; it sure would be nice to get more information about the charities that our celebrities are playing for!

While I’m going on about things I have an issue with in the world in general: Unfortunately for society in general in 2025, there are a number of you who will come to this website with whatever brain rot (reference to today’s Double Jeopardy! Round categories very much intended) has been happening to you over the last few years, and these next four words are for you: Zoe is a woman. If you believe differently, you are wrong, and any influence that you might have on today’s society is undeserved.

And, finally—my opening thoughts don’t usually take four paragraphs—I would say that there is a chance of there being daytime pre-emptions of today’s episode due to planned coverage of the funeral procession of former President Jimmy Carter to the U.S. Capitol today.

Liechtenstein is one of a few European microstates, the fourth-smallest country on the continent in area. Due to its Alpine location, it has a small population and many of its workforce commutes from Switzerland or Austria; Vorarlberg, mentioned in the clue, is the westernmost Austrian state.

When solving this clue, being able to recognize Vorarlberg as “German-sounding” isn’t quite enough, as someone would still need to decide between Luxembourg and Liechtenstein; hopefully, the population figures would be enough to differentiate between those two microstates.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • One of today’s clues certainly explains why so many of the early Jeopardy! Bar League venues were Alamo Drafthouse; I had missed the news that Sony Pictures had bought the chain.
  • For those viewers who will inevitably ask, “Why is lar-nix acceptable but not amont-a-dill-o?”: the word “larynx” could reasonably be pronounced “lar-nx” with a silent Y; thus, it is accepted by the judges. Meanwhile, “amont-a-dill-o” mixes up too many consonants and vowels from “amontillado” to be accepted.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Enzo $15,600 Josh $9,600 Zoe $6,600)

Enzo: Standard cover bet over Josh is $3,601. (Actual bet: $3,800)

Zoe: In order to have any chance of victory, you have to bet at least $5,400. (Actual bet: $5,401)

Josh: Standard cover bet over Zoe is $3,601. However, I would say that because Zoe has to bet at least $5,400, you can probably safely bet up to $8,400 here without really risking second place. (Actual bet: $3,601)

I kept wanting to got with Luxembourg, but the 40,000 population kept pulling me back, correctly to Liechtenstein. Definitely one of the tougher ones.

And, once again, thank you for your support of the trans community, Andy. The last year, in particular, has been difficult because of the brain rot to which you allude. It’s always nice to know we have allies out there.

  2. The very Germanic Vorarlberg leaves few options. My recollection was that the population of Liechtenstein was about 30,000, but I realized in time that it was quite dated, and responded correctly.

  3. I went with Monaco. Population is close, but yes, that name is not nearly French enough sounding to make Monaco a good guess.

    • That was also my guess, just because it had been decades since I’d heard anything about the other two possibilities. Even though I did recall there were a couple of tiny European countries with similar long names, I could not remember them — if I had, no idea which one I would have thought of. However, I really thought my guess was wrong because I assumed that Monaco would not have enough industries, farms, or whatever to need more workers than from among its residents. I’m actually curious as to whether that assumption might be correct.

      • I would think the tourism industry (hotels, casinos) would be enough to have to draw in outside workers.

        • I actually was thinking of casinos and tourism being the main employment, but that these are not employee-heavy enterprises. I was kind of right on that point because that figure is only 10-15,000 workers. Had I realized that the second biggest factor in their economy was banking, I still would have assumed that entails a lot of money, but not A LOT of employees. My assumption about there not being a lot of other need for employment (homegrown or not) was the main way I was wrong — I don’t know what the rest of their workforce is doing, but apparently about half of the total commutes from France. [Of course, Vorarlberg doesn’t sound French, but with countries invading other countries over the last thousand years (especially the last 500 years) it did not seem inconceivable that a place in France might sound Germanic.] Since the clue only said “including” from Vorarlberg, I am assuming that was added because the rest of the clue came too close to also applying to Monaco.

  4. Eastern European countries always mix me up; I knew it had to be close to Germany but could not for the life of me remember what bordered it.

    • but it’s not an Eastern European country 🙂

    • Per Google’s A.I. Luxembourg was a neighbor to [Cold War] EAST Germany and Liechtenstein is to the southEAST of Luxembourg, so your thinking the correct response was an “Eastern European” country makes some sense if you were assuming that Vorarlberg was in Germany rather than Austria (but Austria is southEAST of Germany anyway) especially since you are admittedly mixed up about Eastern European countries.

To me, the population part of the clue was all that was really needed. When it comes to deciding between Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, it’s no contest as Luxembourg is about 15 or 16 times the size of Liechtenstein. The only countries that are smaller are, maybe, Monaco and Vatican City if you count that as a country.

  6. Ken pronounced it with a German inflection in his voice.
