Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category American Authors) for Monday, April 14, 2025 (Season 41, Game 156):

Like a character in one of his novels, this author hid in a meat locker during an Allied bombing

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Jade Snelling, an archivist from Blacksburg, Virginia
Jade Snelling on Jeopardy!
Kyle Harvey, a civil engineer from San Antonio, Texas
Kyle Harvey on Jeopardy!
Andrew Hayes, a law student originally from Tupelo, Mississippi (3-day total: $72,202)
Andrew Hayes on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

It’s time for a new week of Jeopardy! as Andrew Hayes enters today’s game as a 3-day champion. The fact that he’s got $72,202 over three games bodes well for his Tournament of Champions chances—with an expected 140 games until the cutoff, there’s a 75% chance at this point of his current total holding up. However, a fourth win would be even more helpful for his chances, as Kyle Harvey of San Antonio and Jade Snelling of Blacksburg hope to end Andrew’s streak at three wins. I did notice a local news article about Kyle’s appearance for those who think that might be a factor.

One thing that I’ve noticed when watching Andrew’s run so far is that he’s been doing the little things so well. He’s made very few clue selection mistakes compared to his opponents, and even when the idea makes him uncomfortable, he knows he has to go all in at times on Daily Doubles.

During World War II, Kurt Vonnegut was an Allied POW being housed in Dresden; one night, during the Allied Dresden air raid in February 1945, Vonnegut weathered the firestorm by hiding in a meat locker, labeled Schlachthof 5—Slaughterhouse 5. That meat locker later named Vonnegut’s first bestselling novel.

17 Comments on "Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, April 14, 2025"

  1. Slaughterhouse 5 happens to be one of my most favorite movies….But I could not come up with the correct response…

  2. My Creative Writing teacher showed us a TED Talk less than a week ago that mentioned Kurt Vonnegut, and it talked about the circumstances involving the meat locker and how that inspired the name of Slaughterhouse-Five.

Probably as close to a Slumdog Millionaire moment for this show as I’ll get for quite a while!

  3. Vonnegut witnessed the horrors of the Dresden firebombing, perpetrated by our side, the “good guys”. His description of what he saw is heartbreaking.

  4. I actually read the Slaughterhouse 5 in high school – one of the VERY FEW books I read. But alas that was around 50 years ago and I didn’t know that was where the title of it came from anyway.

    • I immediately said “Who was Kurt Vonnegut?”. I had read it shortly after it came out, but I came up with it so quickly because of something I read about it recently. However, I think I would still have gotten it in time [even with time enough to write the question with the fairly long name].

  5. Possibly something lacking in my literature background, but I never have read any Vonnegut, so I had no chance at this Final Jeopardy. I did briefly cpnsider Heller (Catch 22) but immediately rejeted it. From whaI remember of Catch 22, didn’t seem to fit,
Shouldn’t there have been a disclaimer with the Viginia McCaskey clue, saying this episode was taped before her passing. Didn’t really effect the Answer clue, though.

    • It looks like the episode was taped almost three weeks after her death.

    • I had thought that if there were any wrong responses it would likely be Heller. Even if one were not able to specifically remember that circumstance from Catch-22 [especially since it isn’t in there], I don’t feel that it is unimaginable that it could have been. However, there is also the point that Heller wrote a lot of books and it is conceivable [if not recognizing the clue was about Slaughterhouse-5] that a person would think Heller might have written other wartime books and that scenario be in one of them.

This was, for me, a layup. I read the novel in college (albeit 40 years ago), as an assignment for a physics course (that makes more sense than some would guess).

    So it goes.

Again, “easy” for me is a result of my own experiences, education, ethnicity, religious upbringing, etc., and does not imply any denigration of those whom did not immediately guess correctly.

    And . . . so it goes.

Since Kurt Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors and “Slaughterhouse 5” is one of my favorites of his books, this one came to me right away. I did expect, at least, one of the contestants to get this but not necessarily a Triple Get. Great clue for me but not for everybody.

  8. I have not read Slaughterhouse 5, but I knew the name of the book well enough to make the association.

  9. Jim Cardillo | April 14, 2025 at 7:29 pm |

In the “Centenarians” category, the $1,600 clue mentioned a person who lived past “three score and 10.” That would be 70 since a score is 20. Wonder how that made it through to the game.

  10. Answer to Centenarians Russell M. Nelson was incorrect (although Jeopardy accepted it).
Answer: The Church of Latter-day Saints
CORRECT Answer: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

    • You are aware that the most prominent subject matter expert on that subject in American culture is literally hosting the show and absolutely would not have accepted that shortening had it not been acceptable, right?
