Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Fictional Characters) for Thursday, April 17, 2025 (Season 41, Game 159):
This character’s efforts in Africa to end an epidemic killing monkeys inspired Jane Goodall to do something similar
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Michelle Dolinski, a physics professor from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania![]() |
Steven Hoying, an attorney-at-law from Hilliard, Ohio![]() |
Andrew Hayes, a law student originally from Tupelo, Mississippi (6-day total: $137,804)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
After his most dominant win to date on yesterday’s show, coming one correct response away from a $30,000 Coryat score, Andrew Hayes enters today’s game as a 6-day champion. He faces off against Ohio’s Steven Hoying and Philadelphia’s Michelle Dolinski.
Today’s Double Jeopardy round contains a CANADIAN LAKES category. One thing I’m looking forward to is seeing how our contestants fare on that category. Also, I’m reasonably sure that Newfoundland and Labrador doesn’t really have much in the way of prominent lakes, so at least Ken won’t mispronounce “Newfoundland” again.

When she was growing up, there were not that many female scientists could serve as an inspiration for Jane Goodall. However, one of the stories she was inspired by was Hugh Lofting’s The Story of Doctor Dolittle, in which the fictional doctor is sent to Africa to cure a monkey epidemic. Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Tarzan works also served as an inspiration to Goodall, who dreamed of working in Africa.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I don’t 100% hate Michelle’s choice to go to MYTHOLOGY $400 with both Daily Doubles still out, but it may have been worth exhausting the higher values of the other academic categories first.
- No wagering suggestions will be posted due to today’s game being a runaway.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Well, knowing she was also inspired by Tarzan does make me feel better about my miss (I said Jane Lady Greystoke). Good Final!
Must confess I’ve never read the book Dr. Doolittle or even seen the movie, so all I could remember from it was that song “If I Could Talk To The Animals,” which popped up a lot when I was a kid. I had no idea it was about anything as serious as a monkey epidemic. In other words, I failed this one abysmally.
I did read Dr. Doolittle as a child, but I forgot why he went to Africa. Also, I assumed that Jane Goodall was inspired by another woman. So, although this was a fair clue, I still missed it.
I had a feeling this might happen today. Last night after J! aired, WABC (NYC) aired a teaser for today’s game during Wheel, which I don’t recall them doing recently. It showed all three of today’s players and made some remark about whether one of the challengers might stop Andrew from win number 7.
Good run Andrew! I’d lock him in as a favorite in the TOC.
Sadly pre-empted in Chicago due to a special news report. I appreciate your game summaries even more on days like this when I can’t watch the episode! So sorry to miss Andrew’s final game but glad he made it to 6 wins and the TOC!
I GUESSED Doctor Dolittle! I wonder if Steven and Andrew both KNEW it or if one or both of them also just guessed. I would have put the far-fetched response of ‘Who was Babar?’ before leaving it blank.
Nine potential spots for a DD, three of them fairly unlikely. A think one absolutely needs to take the ~1/3 shot at finding a DD there.
For some reason itv abbreviation and acronyms category I thought glow stood for glamorous ladies of wrestling not gorgeous ladies of wrestling at ken gave Michelle cedit for
I have slept since then and it really didn’t matter, but I used to be a wrestling fan.
Since you were a wrestling fan, then I’m sure you were well aware of the famous professional wrestler Gorgeous George who predates even the original GLOW. Perhaps announcers often described the ladies as glamorous (in order to not overuse their name as a mere adjective) and your subconscious registered them as being the glamorous ladies of wrestling as separation from Gorgeous George. On the other hand I’d assumed that the organizers of that group of ladies chose ‘Gorgeous’ rather than glamorous or stunning or spectacular or awesome or dazzling or whatever partly because GLOW was better than SLOW or FLOW, but mostly as homage to Gorgeous George (though probably less as a matter of respect and more as making a new team immediately associated in peoples’ minds with wrestling).
