Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Western Hemisphere) for Monday, April 21, 2025 (Season 41, Game 161):
This country has 2 capitals, is bounded by 5 other countries & has 37 official languages
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Maja Vlajnic, a senior data & policy specialist from Fredericksburg, Virginia![]() |
Bob Callen, a retired librarian from Lexington, Kentucky![]() |
Liam Starnes, an undergraduate student from Barrington, Illinois (1-day total: $32,401)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
As we enter a new week of Jeopardy! play, UChicago undergrad Liam Starnes returns to defend his title after picking up $32,401 on Friday. Assuming the postseason stays the same as 2025, though, Liam will still need another victory in order to have much of a chance of postseason play at the start of 2026. It seemed to me as if Liam’s buzzer timing was inconsistent in his opening game, though—there were stretches where he was very strong, and there were times where he wasn’t heard from at all. If he can become more consistent, we might see a longer run from Liam. However, we do have two challengers today in Bob Callen and Maja Vlajnic, both of whom I’m sure would love to become the new champion.

Bolivia, located in South America with two capitals—Sucre and La Paz—borders Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, and Peru, which its 37 official languages include Spanish, Quechua, and numerous other indigenous languages.
To me, this seemed to be a relatively straightforward clue, especially after remembering that the category was “The Western Hemisphere”.

Liam found DD2 almost immediately and doubled up through it. Bob found DD3 midway through the round, betting just $1,200 on a $1,600 clue. However, Bob played well enough in the round to lead going into Final in spite of a late charge by Liam. All three players were north of $10,000 going into Final.

Liam 16 correct 4 incorrect
Maja 14 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 30 (0 today).

Andy’s Thoughts:
- One thing that I am impressed with in general is Liam’s strategy, knowing enough to min-max on the Daily Doubles.
- When it comes to Final Jeopardy betting, if Maja wanted to force Liam do to the math right, the bet has to be all in; holding back $100 doesn’t defend against the most common math errors.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Bob $15,200 Liam $12,790 Maja $10,200)
Liam: Standard cover bet over Maja is $7,611. (Actual bet: $7,611)
Bob: Standard cover bet over Liam is $10,381. (Actual bet: $10,381)
Maja: Your best chance of winning comes with a bet between $5,001 (passing Bob’s pre-Final score in this case by $1) and $5,020 (saving enough to win on a Triple Stumper.) (Actual bet: $10,100)

Was stuck running through Europe for about 15 seconds before I thought I remembered something about Bolivia having two capitals; though I didn’t know the other two facts, given the “two capitals”, Bolivia was the only answer that made sense to me.
Great way to start the week, especially considering this is my first back-to-back get in a while! 🙂
Googling it after the fact, it appears as though most of Europe is actually in the Eastern Hemisphere… I’m extra glad I didn’t go with any country from there now!
Yes sir! 😉
Somehow I remembered that Boliva had two capitals as well, though where, how I learned that fact is a mystery.
But a “get” is a “get,” and, after a run of misses, I’ll take it.

I had only recently learned about Bolivia having two capitals and I do remember that how I learned it was from some other Final Jeopardy! being about countries in that area and my looking up further information out of curiosity and finding the two capital situation. Maybe that is how you learned it. But I have to admit that even though I right away remembered learning it (and how), I could not recall which country it was within the time limit. 😬
For me it was between Peru and Bolivia. I thought Bolivia had two capitals and couldn’t think of a second one for Peru so I went with Bolivia. Nice way to start this week in Spring.
Usually when Bolivia’s capital comes up in trivia it has to do with it being the capital at the highest elevation. I didn’t know there was a second one. But being a country bordered by five other countries in the western hemisphere, I figured it had to be in South America. But I did not figure Bolivia.
There was a time when I was confused as to what city was the capital of Bolivia. Some people would say one city and other people would say another. It wasn’t until I realized that Bolivia has two capitals that my confusion cleared up. As a joke, you could say Bolivia has three capitals as the third one is a capital B.
Heh. And South Africa has five capitals.
The way I make it, if Liam had bet anything more than $1300 on the first DD he would have been behind Maja going into FJ, ceteris paribus. I know ceteris paribus doesn’t actually apply here, especially since Liam might’ve tried to build up a balance instead of hunting for DDs immediately in DJ. Smart bet regardless.
I actually got a FJ right. LOL The Western Hemisphere kept me in play, then I knew it had to be in South America. Then I knew it wasn’t on the coasts. Then I guessed Bolivia and lo and behold I got it right! I’ll take that!
Sure seems like we’ve had more than our usual amount of 2nd place coming from behind to win the game with Andrew Hayes doing it twice in his 6 game run and now Liam today.
Retro congrats to Liam on the comeback win! Will he get #3 tomorrow? We will see! 🙂
