Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
It’s incredible just how much the UK and US versions have been going in parallel these days. On the same day that the US version has Andrew Hayes going for a fifth victory, the UK version sees Ben Jones going for a fifth as well. Ben faces off against Diana Hallagan from Leeds and Ed Brims from Reading.

Diane: Bet £26 to cover Ed. (Actual bet: £3,400)
Ed: You’re probably going to have to go all in here, in case Diane bets small. (Actual bet: £800)

Note to self: New Zealand + islands/water = probably something related to Cook. I think I recall a similar FJ coming up in America during last season’s Champions Wildcard, but I could be incorrect.
Congratulations to Ben for becoming the third five-day champion and the biggest money winner on the UK series! I had a feeling someone would be winning big today when I saw that two players had more than £3,500 each going into Final, and I’m glad Diane and Ben obliged. (I would assume the comment about different wagering guidelines was one about what Ben would have finished today with if he gave an incorrect response in Final, but I don’t want to jump to any conclusions.)
Now I’m wondering… how long can Ben go on?
I thought the same thing — “New Zealand + islands/water = probably something related to Cook”! Unfortunately that was not before the correct response was revealed. I think you were also implying that.
Brilliant game. Really competitive and played to a great standard.
I’ve read stories of people swimming across the Cook Strait. It sounds like a mind blowing feat given the conditions.
Thanks for pointing out the significance of Ben’s wager, MasterDoge, I was going to ask Andy what the restricted wager might have been as I hadn’t noticed…! I wonder if the British production team weren’t looking out for it.
For what it’s worth, and I’m sure you’d already expected this to be the case, I’m pretty sure that Ben not only has the highest winnings of anyone in the Stephen Fry hosted series but of anyone in any of the four UK versions of Jeopardy. Most of the previous series had fixed daily prizes of a few hundred pounds (in part due to laws at the time restricting cash prizes that could be won on TV) and when the restriction was lifted in 1993, the cash amounts in the first round were one fifth of the amounts we now see.
Interesting on 15 April US broadcast on the Jeopardy round on Bodies of Water for $400 –
The Clue: Barrie Devenport in 1962 was the 1st man known to swim this strait named for an explorer, Cape Terawhiti to the coast of Wellington
The correct response: What is the Cook Strait
Wow, what a coincidence! Its just as Andy says above, the two shows are somehow moving in parallel.
