Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category City Nicknames) for Tuesday, April 15, 2025 (Season 41, Game 157):

The poet Albius Tibullus called a city this in the late 1st century B.C., some 700 years after its traditional founding

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Thomas Wilson, a teacher from Taylors, South Carolina
Thomas Wilson on Jeopardy!
Dondi DeMarco, an operations executive from New York, New York
Dondi DeMarco on Jeopardy!
Andrew Hayes, a law student originally from Tupelo, Mississippi (4-day total: $98,603)
Andrew Hayes on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Today, Andrew Hayes looks to become the 284th player in the post-1984 era of Jeopardy! to win at least five games. He’s also $6,397 away from passing Joey Beachum as the winningest player to represent Mississippi on the program at this point; however, it’s only a matter of time, as if you take into account that Andrew will win at least $2,000 in consolation prizing and is extremely likely get at least another $5,000 in either Champions Wildcard or the Tournament of Champions, Beachum’s mark will get surpassed eventually regardless. However, South Carolina’s Thomas Wilson and New York’s Dondi DeMarco are looking to prevent Andrew from taking that fifth victory.

Romulus aeternae nondum formaverat urbis moenia, consorti non habitanda Remo. With those words from Elegies, Albius Tibullus first used the term known in English as “the Eternal City” to refer to Rome.

Being very familiar with the nickname, it was an easy jump for me once I figured out that the clue was referring to Rome.

  1. I thought of Rome or Athens…but thinking of ‘poetic names’, I went with ‘city of lights’.

  2. I guessed, “city of seven hills.”

    • ego quoque

      • I have been trying to figure out what the construction “consorti non habitanda Remo” is. There are lots of translations out there, so I get the meaning but I haven’t found any discussion of the syntax. Is this an ablative absolute? Consorti and remo can both be (masculine) ablatives. Habitanda as well with a long a at the end. But that sounds 1st declension feminine. My Latin goes back to the 60s and is very rusty, to say the least. Can anyone lead me though this? Thanks.

        • My Latin is about the same age as yours, but I believe habitanda is a gerundive and is neuter accusative plural to agree with moenia. Does that make sense? “Romulus was not yet shaping the walls of the eternal city, not to be inhabited by his companion Remus.” His brother, of course. It’s the name type of form as “Carthago delenda est”, except there you do have a gerundive that’s feminine nominative singular, to agree with its antecedent. Carthage is to be destroyed. The walls [of the eternal city] are not to be inhabited by Remus. And poor Remus was not merely kept out of where Romulus wanted to build the city, but was killed during that dispute.

  3. I had this, but unfortunately, I didn’t think I had this. Not knowing the person who is said to have given Rome it’s nickname, or, when it was founded, it was his Roman sounding name at made me think of the Eternal CIty.

    • I immediately thought of Rome, but I had no idea why since I don’t know the founding dates of any cities. It may have been due to the poet’s name sounding Roman, but my second thought was that there were many Roman cities (Pompeii, for example), so that poet did not have to be from Rome and did not necessarily have to have been “nicknaming” Rome rather than some other city “back then”. But Rome being the Eternal City was the only nickname I could think of other than Paris being the City of Lights (which I knew was named centuries later), so I went with Rome’s nickname.

Wow, what a close game! Ignoring the final dollar amounts, take a look at those other statistics. Two players each with 17 correct and one with 15 correct. Also, two players at 29.82% in first on buzzer with the third being at 28.07%. It doesn’t get much closer than that. What a great, competitive game, in my opinion.

I’m curious if anyone knows why they felt they had to put this episode”s tape date, 2/25, on the screen. Any thoughts?
