Ben Jones on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

“Will no one rid us of this extraordinary Welshman?” Stephen Fry asked that question yesterday as Ben Jones won his ninth game. Today, Ben goes for superchampion status against Rosemary Mallace of Manchester and Jordan Henshaw of Nuneaton.

Today is the last game of Series 2. It may even be the last first-run game of Jeopardy! airing in the UK. Which means that it may well be more likely that ITV or Whisper North chooses to rid us of Ben, either by cancelling the show, or choosing not to invite Ben to start Series 3, “because nobody will remember” as they did with Archi Campbell between the start of Series 1 and 2. Considering this flies completely in the face of half of the promotional work that Stephen Fry did for this season, in which he gushed of the importance of “how far will the champion go”, that is a bit of a head-scratcher of a production decision.

Honestly, though, other than that single production decision from Whisper North, I have quite enjoyed Series 2; I definitely felt it was produced better overall than Series 1 was, and if there are further episodes produced, I will absolutely strive to cover them here the same way I cover the American episodes.

Can they invite Ben to one of the American tournaments? I think that would be fun to watch!

It feels apt to finish the series with a tour de force by Ben after the second break, with 21 correct responses in DJ and a single get in FJ.

I remembered John Hughes. Looking back over my comments, it appears I got 14 out of 25 correct in FJ across the series, which I’m quite proud of as it’s a lot better than I did last year. However I don’t think I do as well in the other rounds. This series has told me (again!) that I was right not to apply – I enjoy quizzing but every single contestant in the two series here is a lot better than me!

I’ve really enjoyed the series, probably even more than last year (my irritation at the treatment of Archi Campbell notwithstanding). I agree the seventh category was an improvement, seemed not to notice the sound effects after a while, and think the show seemed to build on the good bits from last year. In particular the contestants all seemed to be lovely again and Sir Stephen Fry was a marvellous host – so nice that he treated everyone with such dignity throughout, which isn’t always the case on quizzes here.

There was a moment at the start of this episode which seemed to sum that up: just after Stephen wished all three contestants good luck, Ben turned to his left and whispered “good luck” to the other two contestants. Considering the high stakes here that was a really nice thing to do. A true champ. Glad he’s got £64,000 – that’s very good for a British daytime quiz! We’ve had three great champs this year.

Andy, thanks so much for continuing to blog the UK game and it’s great to hear that you’ll continue doing so if the show comes back. Your blog has really added a lot to my enjoyment of the show. (For example, as I’ve just gone through the entries, I’ve just noticed that both Dan and Ben scored a lower Coryat than the defending champion in their first episodes, which I had either forgotten or not realised before. Fascinating to think how things could have turned out differently if not for FJ.) Thank you to Lisa and MasterDoge too – I’ve really enjoyed chatting with you in the comments!

    • “Thank you to Lisa and MasterDoge too – I’ve really enjoyed chatting with you in the comments!”

      Likewise! 🙂

    • Same as MasterDoge. 😊 [I tried to put this in late last night but my laptop froze and I’d forgotten it didn’t go in.]

  3. I was taken directly to where the answer was when I refreshed the page at about 11am Eastern and never got a chance to read the clue, so I can’t count this as a get. Especially since I wouldn’t have gotten it otherwise. Oh well.

A massive congratulations to Ben for being the first 10+ game winner on the UK version, and the 19th across all versions of Jeopardy! Yes, really – before him, there have been just 17 on the main show (plus Vinny Varadarajan on Sports Jeopardy!), so Ben’s in some very exclusive company here!

I have some stats from the series, because I’m a massive nerd…

Across all 25 episodes of the series, the total money won by champions was £114,431 (plus £2,500 in second-place consolation prizes). This works out to an average payday of £4,577.24, about 45% of the board value, and roughly $23,540.09 if converted to American units.

Incredibly, there were just six champions across the entire series! First, Adam Diouri won the season premiere before being taken out by Lizzie Mackarel in episode 2. Then, Sree Kanthamneni dispatched Lizzie before becoming the first player in Series 2 to successfully defend their title. And then came the heavy hitters – Abby Hallett with four wins, Dan Afshar with seven, and of course, the “extraordinary Welshman” (as Stephen referred to him) Ben Jones, with ten!

Ben, as you might have been able to expect, also won BY FAR the largest share of all of the money won this series; his £64,530 accounts for 56.39% of the total money won. Dan Afshar, who was taken out by Ben, is next, his £24,200 accounting for 21.15% of the total. Abby Hallett, the last remaining member of this series’ Big Three, is third, with her £12,075 accounting for 10.55%. Sree Kanthamneni’s total accounts for 6.34%, Lizzie Mackarel’s accounts for 3.52%, and Adam Diouri’s accounts for just 2.05% – but regardless of how much money they won, these six will always be able to call themselves Jeopardy champions.

This has been a very fun series to keep track of from across the pond, and hopefully it’ll get renewed for a Series 3 – and hopefully the first episode of that series sees Ben going for win #11!

  4. David S. Shashoua JD LLM EA | April 24, 2025 at 10:29 pm |

Now that series 2 is over, does any fundamentally believe that there will be a Series 3 – with Ben Jones back to defend for his 11th game?

  5. Adam Diouri | April 25, 2025 at 11:00 am |

It’s been a wonderful series, and some amazing champions over the run! I’m gutted I made the wrong coinflip betting call in FJ that saw my run ended quick; in any road, I was beaten by a way better quizzer!

FWIW R.E. Archie- I actually asked if he would be returning for my episode, but I think I was told they just wanted to start fresh. It’s a shame for Archie, but I’d love to give him a game just for the craic!

Be fab if they could renew the series again. It’s a lot better than S1 was, although I can’t help feel the timeslot ITV gave it won’t have helped it. Still, fingers crossed!

  6. Gripped to this brilliant show with Stephen Fry at the helm…make sure Ben comes back, please.

  7. One thing I noticed is that when a clue ends in a year in brackets, sometimes Stephen reads the year but not always! How are players meant to know when to buzz? I’ve heard players buzzer go off while he’s in the middle of saying a year
