Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Names) for Thursday, April 24, 2025 (Season 41, Game 164):
He was riding back from the conquest of Granada when he was summoned to a royal meeting that would change history
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Harold Goldston III, a karaoke bar owner from Knoxville, Tennessee![]() |
Raguell Couch, an undergraduate student from Durham, North Carolina![]() |
Liam Starnes, an undergraduate student from Barrington, Illinois (4-day total: $81,801)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Today, UChicago undergraduate student Liam Starnes looks to become the 285th 5-time champion in the post-1984 history of Jeopardy!. Hoping to stop him are another undergraduate student in Raguell Couch and Knoxville karaoke bar owner Harold Goldston III. One thing that I do want to point out is that Harold was given a write-up in his local media last week about this appearance; that often does presage a better-than-average performance on the show.
One thing that has been an advantage for Liam—he has generally outplayed his opponents on strategy. There have been a couple of players where opponents have given more correct responses than Liam, but Liam’s strategy has been able to carry the day for him. Future contestants: ignore strategy at your peril!
Due to NFL draft coverage on ABC today and tomorrow, there will be pre-emptions in several ABC markets; check your local listings if you watch the show on ABC. Listings are currently showing that New York, Miami, and Raguell’s home market of Durham are pre-empting the show entirely tomorrow, to give three examples.

Correct response: Who was Christopher Columbus?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Prior to his ocean voyages in which he visited North America for the Spanish, Christopher Columbus was present at the Spanish conquest of the Emirate of Granada. From there, he was summoned to the court of Ferdinand and Isabella, where discussions were renewed to send Columbus on an ocean voyage westward. During that now-famed voyage, Columbus’s crew arrived at numerous Caribbean islands, that were claimed for the Spanish.
Knowledge of Spanish history, including the conclusion of the Spanish defeat of Granada in 1492, was crucial for me in putting the pieces together and getting this Final Jeopardy correct.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- I would like to state this unequivocally: Raguell’s phrasing seemed to be crossing over Ken calling on her. It was very much present. Being that he also called “minute to go” in Double Jeopardy, this may have been an editing choice by the show in order to ensure we saw all 61 clues. I apparently had to boldface the above due to the inability of some people to read this before commenting.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Liam $16,000 Raguell $10,600 Harold -$2,200)
Liam: Standard cover bet is $5,201. (Actual bet: $5,201)
Raguell: Bet at least $800 for any chance of victory. You might as well go all in, though, both to force Liam to do the math right and to maximize winnings in case of victory. (Actual bet: $10,502)
Harold: (By rule, did not participate in Final Jeopardy)

I had no idea and made a wild guess based on “a royal meeting that would change history.“ I got lucky on this one.
I didn’t realize Columbus would have been a soldier. I jumped to Cortez, getting “conquistador” vibes. Not quite.
Christopher Columbus had immediately come to mind, but I’d only remembered him as an explorer and a [would-be]merchant, so I also said Cortez.
Ditto here as to remembering that Granada was conquered in 1492, so I sort of connected the dots. I had no idea about what Columbus was doing before setting sail for parts West so it was a lucky guess.
Same here, Al. Since Granada was conquered in 1492, that led directly to Columbus as the most likely person given the year and a “meeting that would change history.” Who is associated with 1492 more than Columbus? No one that I could think of so I went with CC.
