Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Cars & The Movies) for Wednesday, May 28, 2025 (Season 41, Game 188):
A fake speedometer was used in this make of car from a 1980s movie since the actual car’s speedometer didn’t go high enough
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Thomas Sweeney, a survey technician from Morrow, Ohio![]() |
Alice Welch, an epidemiologist from Queens, New York![]() |
Tyler Griffith, a criminal forensic scientist originally from Sturgis, Michigan (1-day total: $799)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Tyler Griffith is your new champion on Jeopardy!—although his win total yesterday was small, just $799. That wasn’t entirely his fault, though—both of his opponents wagered too much in Final Jeopardy yesterday. He definitely wants to win again, but Alice Welch and Thomas Sweeney want to stop him.
Episode #7 of this season of Jeopardy! Masters airs tonight as we’ve reached our semifinal phase of the event; Victoria Groce, Yogesh Raut, Juveria Zaheer, and Isaac Hirsch are going to be competing tonight and next Tuesday for the three spots in the final on June 4. Make sure to watch on ABC and CTV2 at 9:00 (8:00 Central).

Correct response: What is a DeLorean?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
The DMC DeLorean, from John DeLorean’s DeLorean Motor Company, was modified in the 1985 film Back to the Future in order to permit the major plot point of time travel, as the stock speedometer on the DeLorean wasn’t intended to reach the required speeds.
This should be a relatively straightforward clue for anyone who has a passing knowledge of 1980s popular culture.
I am putting this next sentence in boldface for those who were complaining—especially on Reddit—about the difficulty of this clue: Final Jeopardy is allowed to be easy, because the possibility that a clue might be easy is important in order to keep players betting to win in Final Jeopardy. If Final Jeopardy was never easy, players would start playing more conservatively, and the show would be more boring as a result.

According to my calculations, when this Final Jeopardy reaches 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see a triple get.
👍 [I almost didn’t respond correctly because it didn’t seem believable that a sporty-looking car like a Delorean wouldn’t have a speedometer that went to at least 90 MPH.] [BTW, my alternate thoughts were “007’s Aston Martin” and Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang but I immediately went back to the Delorean, especially upon re-reading the clue’s “this make of car” rather than “this car”.]
Horribly I guessed a Volkswagon, as in Herbie. 🙁
At first I thought of “Speed” but that was a bus, from the 1990’s. Then I thought of the speeding car in “BULLITT”, but that was in the 60’s. Eventually I thought of the correct response, as in the DeLorean!!!
I was thinking of a remake from Herbie the Love Bug. My 1969 Beetle speedo did not go up very high. Surprised a DeLorean’s speedo doesn’t go up to 88mph.
Yes, me too!
I thought of Christime’s Plymouth Fury but I knew that was a stretch. You seldom see anything Stephen King-related in Final Jeopardy (or in the regular game for that matter)
I also went with “Christine “. I completely forgot about “Back to the Future”.
With regard to your comment about spelling and pronunciation would Delorion have been ruled incorrect?
I think it would have been ruled correct.
I think you are almost certainly right, but I suspect that even though Thomas didn’t know how to spell it, he knew how to pronounce it and feared that “Delorion” would be judged as “De-lory-on”, so changed to “Delorian”.
Tyler’s two day total ends up being less than if he’d lost and come in second yesterday. But the title of having been a Jeopardy champion is worth more than that extra couple hundred dollars, I’m sure.
Many years ago I read all the BttF trivia on IMDB, so it was an easy get for me. I wonder if there was a Jeopardy” clue regarding the fact that the time machine was originally supposed to be a refrigerator, but Spielberg vetoed the idea, concerned child viewers might attempt to climb into one.
When I saw the category was “Cars & The Movies,” my first thought was “DeLorean.” That’s one of my few blind guesses that actually worked out.
I can understand Tyler’s wager of $3401 to pass Thomas’ $8800. I don’t see the logic behind Alice’s wager of the same amount. What am I missing here?
