Today’s Final Jeopardy – Friday, June 13, 2025

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the June 13, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Historic Names) for Friday, June 13, 2025 (Season 41, Game 200):

Some 200 years after her birth, she was awarded the rank of General in Maryland’s National Guard on Veterans Day 2024

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Kelly Cui, a student from Cambridge, Massachusetts
Kelly Cui on Jeopardy!
Katie Kornacki, a professor of English from Hartford, Connecticut
Katie Kornacki on Jeopardy!
Matt Massie, an attorney originally from South Charleston, West Virginia (3-day total: $79,800)
Matt Massie on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

At this point in the season, it would be almost impossible to unseat current champion Matt Massie from a spot in Champions Wildcard at least, and assuming there are no changes to the postseason format, he has a very strong chance of qualifying for the Tournament of Champions. However, those chances are not yet 100% for either tournament, and he can get those chances closer to 100% by continuing his strong play. That being said, challengers Kelly Cui and Katie Kornacki obviously want to unseat Matt and spend the weekend as champion themselves. We shall see what happens!

For those who watch on NBC during the day, U.S. Open golf coverage this afternoon on NBC is causing pre-emptions; Matt Carberry’s Google sheet is available for consultation, or check local listings.

Correct response: Who is Harriet Tubman?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Maryland-born Harriet Tubman, as an honor to her military contributions to the United States, was posthumously commissioned as a one-star general on Veterans Day 2024 by the state of Maryland.

“Each daring mission behind enemy territory was worthy of a medal,” said Major General Janeen L. Birckhead, the adjutant general of Maryland, during the ceremony. “With courage and selflessness, Harriet Tubman nobly advanced the survival of the Union and the proposition that all people are created equal.”

What I find most interesting about this clue is that it’s something that’s happened to Harriet Tubman since the last time she was asked about in Final Jeopardy—on June 17, 2022. Let’s just hope everyone completes her name this time.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • If I may make a suggestion to Matt, as he appears to be enough of a racing fan to want to drive a NASCAR stock car at 200mph: go all out, buy yourself a racing simulator, and join iRacing for its NASCAR content.
  • Viewers are reminded that in order to go from an incorrect response to a correct one, a player is given twice the clue’s value in correction.
  • Katie’s bet sizing today in Final Jeopardy unnecessarily gave Kelly further pathways to victory—it’s just one more reason why leaders should not bet a dollar more than they have to in Final Jeopardy.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Katie $10,600 Matt $9,400 Kelly $5,200)

Matt: Cover bet over Kelly is $1,001. (Actual bet: $9,400)

Katie: Standard cover bet is $8,201. (Actual bet: $9,400)

Kelly: You can’t both defend against a Triple Stumper and bet to pass Matt if Katie bets just to cover Matt and Matt bets just to cover you. So, this comes down to what you think Matt will do. If you think Matt will bet big, bet less than $2,800. If you think he’ll bet small, bet at least $3,200. (Actual bet: $5,199)

  1. Took an embarrassingly long time — like halfway through the think music — to pull this one. If you’re a fast reader, of course, you get more like 35-40 seconds to think of the answer, and that benefits me. (What took so long? I associate Tubman with New York, not Maryland, because of where she lived post-Civil War.)

Still, good way to start the weekend!

  2. Given that tomorrow is Flag Day, I guessed Betsy Ross.

  3. I guessed Clara Barton, who was born in 1821 and died in Glen Echo, MD, in 1912. She was born in Massachusetts however. The state where someone was born seems to be more significant when awarding such honors.

    • Except for Lincoln. Kentucky seems to get the shaft when it comes to Lincoln. You never hear Kentucky called ‘The Land of Lincoln’.

      • Lincoln’s family moved to Indiana when he was 7, and to Illinois when he was about 21. One satirist (probably Richard Armour) said that Lincoln was born in 3 states, and in 2 log cabins, the original and the reconstructed.

      • True enough. KY ought to take Lincoln back from IL.

      • Well, I think Illinois is more important for “land of”, but Indiana has a “boyhood home of” dedicated to Lincoln and Kentucky has the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park with an impressive monument containing a replica of the birthplace cabin and the Abraham Lincoln Boyhood Home at Knob Creek in Kentucky is also part of the National Park System as a unit of the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site. Of course Daniel Boone is maybe more strongly associated with Kentucky, but I guess as the years pass fewer people are that aware of him, but Abe Lincoln will never be forgotten.

    • I also guessed Clara Barton.

As a native Marylander, this one was pretty easy as I remember when the event took place (the honor, not her birth as I’m not that old).

In an odd twist of fate, the contestant that didn’t quite get to finish Harriet Tubman’s name was also from Maryland. She got as far as “Tubma” but ran out of time. If I remember correctly, there was enough of a kerfuffle, that the show brought her back for a second opportunity. Does anyone else recall that happening?

    • Yes, I do, without Andy obliquely mentioning it. I feel like your comment sounds like she was brought back to a later regular show, but it was to the (first?) Second Chance Tournament, wasn’t it?

      • Robert J. Fawkes | June 13, 2025 at 8:49 pm |

Yes, Lisa, you are correct. Sadie came back for the “Second Chance Tournament” in 2022. As it happens, she finished second in that tournament, I do believe.

  5. I figured that it would be Harriet Tubman since I know she was from Maryland.

  6. I got this FJ. It wasn’t quite a “Who else could it be?” but was a “Who’d deserve it more than her?”. But I also am certain that I have read that many of her associates called her “the general”, but I can’t say for sure it was truth rather than embellishment.

  7. I enjoyed the clue about Field Marshall Bluecher of Prussia, but I can’t believe that neither Ken nor any of the contestants took this opportunity to whinny like a horse. So serious!
