Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Famous American Homes) for Wednesday, June 18, 2025 (Season 41, Game 203):
The name of this residence completed in 1895 combines part of the owner’s Dutch name with an English word for an open expanse
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Sunny Hwang, a textbook editor from Brooklyn, New York![]() |
Jacob Hale, a nonprofit finance director from Anchorage, Alaska![]() |
Dan Hopkins, a teacher from Hanover, New Hampshire (1-day total: $10,799)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Dan Hopkins continues your carousel of Jeopardy! champions, as the average length of a champion’s run on the show is definitely coming back closer to the long-term historical average of 2. (In my own Tournament of Champions predictions, I have used that long-term historical average, despite more recent years featuring slightly longer runs on average).
Today’s challengers for Dan are Jacob Hale and Sunny Hwang, with Jacob being a relatively rare representative on the show from Alaska—he’s only the second player in the 2020s from the state to appear on this show, after Tim Kelly last season.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Biltmore is the famous Vanderbilt estate, located in Asheville, North Carolina. It gets its name as a combination of part of the name Vanderbilt with the word “moor”—the Anglo-Saxon word for an open area.
In a bit of personally local flair, the estate gives its name to a hat company in Guelph, Ontario (one of my previous residences)—the Biltmore estate gave its name to New York City’s Biltmore Hotel, which in turn was the inspiration for the name of Guelph’s Biltmore Hat Company. For those with knowledge of junior hockey history, that company was why Guelph’s New York Rangers junior affiliate in the 1950s was known as the Biltmores.
It’ll be interesting to see how well this Final Jeopardy clue plays.

(bets $0 and preps joke answer)
…hey, a man’s gotta know his limitations.
Agreed. Not a clue.
My guess just from the category was ‘Graceland’, and then once seeing the clue, I couldn’t come up with anything better.
I also try to guess the clue from just the category.
My list of possibilities was Mount Vernon,Monticello, Montpelier, Falling Waters,San Simian,Maralago, the Biltmore, the Breakers. Didn’t think of Graceland.
From the clue it had to be the Biltmore.
Be careful. Had the correct response been the Frank Lloyd Wright house in PA, you would likely have been ruled incorrect. The house is Fallingwater – one word, not plural.
San Simeon
Got it, but if I was playing, I’d have the embarrassment of having to cross out the Vander, since that’s the only way I got it.
The “owner’s Dutch name” part of the clue immediately brought to mind Vanderbilt. From there, it was an easy trip to “Bilt” plus “more” for Biltmore. Also, because I’m originally from Baltimore, I’ve often thought about how similar “Biltmore” is to “Baltimore.” I really thought, at least, one contestant would get this, if not more (see what I did there?). 🙂
Andy, weirdly, after the number of correct and incorrect responses under “Statistics after Double Jeopardy,” it shows, “Total number of unplayed clues this season: 1 (0 today).” We know that can’t be true. That’s kind of odd for a typo; you may want to check that.
Finally a category I knew something about. Glad to see a NASCAR one. Now if they will only have a Shakespeare category that’s about fishing rods.
It was great to see Phineas and Ferb present a category today.
I was sure that I was right in thinking it would be The Biltmore since after I thought of that possibility, I assumed the ‘Van’ in Vanderbilt was from Dutch. [I’ve been very familiar with Vanderbilt this and that for decades, but never thought about the ‘Van’ indicating probably Dutch origin.] There are frequent commercials for The Biltmore House and/or Estate in at least a 500 mile radius of the place, but it was also mentioned in the news quite a bit last September due to Hurricane Helene walloping North Carolina.
I got it right away, especially having been there a couple of times. It’s an amazing place. It’s too bad the guy who built it didn’t live very many years to enjoy it.
My FJ guess was Monticello. Oh well! On to tomorrow. 🙂
Oh, and a NASCAR fan, I also ran the category. 🙂
I only got three of the NASCAR clues, though “white” was immediately what came to mind but I talked myself out of it because it is associated with surrender 🙄. But I only expected to get two as I went into the category expecting them all to be people and planning to say Richard Petty if it seemed to indicate an old guy and Jeff Gordon if a not-old (at least to me) guy 😉. The other one I missed was restrictor plates — I’ve heard of them quite a bit, but couldn’t think of what they’re called, so tried “damper plates”. Hopefully I said “damper” instead of “dampening” due to the “or” at the end of the correct word.
Not too bad Lisa! 😎😎😎
