Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Movie Music) for Monday, July 7, 2025 (Season 41, Game 216):
The last 2 Best Song Oscar winners whose titles were the same name as the movie they were in had this man in the leading role
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Vince Carter, a lawyer from South Pasadena, California![]() |
Ashley Caval Curto, a tutor & bowling alley attendant from Weymouth, Massachusetts![]() |
Scott Riccardi, an engineer from Somerville, New Jersey (2-day total: $68,000)![]() |
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
Scott Riccardi did his postseason chances a massive favor on the holiday Friday, picking up $50,400 in the biggest win of the season. Today, he faces off against Ashley Caval Curto and Vince Carter. (No, not the NBA star. This one’s a lawyer from South Pasadena.)
One thing that I would like to point out right now is that today is episode #216, and we’ve only had 40 unplayed clues the entire season. During the end of the Alex Trebek era, we usually would have had 40 unplayed clues by the end of September. So I won’t be too upset if the “THE DC UNIVERSE WITH JAMES GUNN” category today runs a little on the longer side and we get an unplayed clue or two in Double Jeopardy.

The most recent two “title” songs to win the Oscar for Best Song were both James Bond theme songs: “No Time To Die” and “Skyfall”. (Interestingly, “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre also won Best Song.) Of course, these both starred Daniel Craig as 007.
I don’t know how this one’s going to play, to be honest. If contestants realize quickly that James Bond movie themes are generally the most likely to both carry the movie’s title and win Oscars, this could be a correct response for our players. However, if they don’t, this is going to be an excruciatingly long 30 seconds for them. It’s also a good puzzle for the viewers at home, most of whom are probably still fans of the series and will probably have made some sort of effort to see these films at some point.

Scott picked up $5,000 and Ashley $4,000 from the Daily Doubles; it looked like Scott had locked up a runaway on the last clue—but a judges’ reversal on an earlier incorrect response of Vince’s gave us a game going into Final Jeopardy.
Statistics after Double Jeopardy:
Scott 25 correct 2 incorrect
Vince 16 correct 1 incorrect
Ashley 11 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 40 (0 today).
Scores going into Final:
Scott $25,000

The reversal likely just ended up giving Scott some extra money, as both Vince and Scott were correct in Final. That makes Scott a 3-day champion, going for win #4 tomorrow.
Tonight’s results:
Ashley $11,600 – $7,400 = $4,200 (Who is Timothee Chalo)
Vince $14,000 + $11,001 = $25,001 (Who is Daniel Craig)

Andy’s Thoughts:
- In a rare case, because there was a 2016 film titled Suicide Squad (starring Will Smith & Jared Leto), the leading article is required for 2021’s The Suicide Squad, asked about during today’s game. This is consistent with the show’s rules, and a notable exception to the usual leading article rules.
- I guess I can understand why a contestant might play for second place, but Ashley’s bet both failed to play for victory and risked second place if Vince made the standard cover bet. Wagering strategy is really just basic arithmetic; it’s not difficult to learn.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.
Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:
(Scores: Scott $25,000 Vince $14,000 Ashley $11,600)
Scott: Standard cover bet is $3,001. (Actual bet: $3,001)
Ashley: To have any chance of victory whatsoever, you have to bet at least $10,400. (Actual bet: $7,400)
Vince: Standard cover bet over Ashley is $9,201. Being that Ashley has to bet most of her money and Scott is overwhelmingly likely to make a cover bet, going all in here is unnecessary. (Actual bet: $11,001)

I went way back to the 70s on this one and thought of John Travolta, thinking Saturday Night Fever and Grease might’ve been Oscar contenders.
Same thought. Know nothing of the 007 films.
I went back even farther and went with Robert Redford thinking “The Way We Were” and thinking maybe there was another one I was forgetting. And I’m a big Barbra Streisand fan.
And while we’re on the subject: “Goldfinger” and “Live and Let Die” should’ve won Oscars. At least “View to a Kill” got to be a #1 hit.
But in all seriousness, as someone who had a CD of Bond themes up to Licence to Kill, this was a slam dunk. Their themes almost unanimously share the name with the movie, and Skyfall came to mind right away.
The shame is that this is a great FJ, but it may still be unanswered by some people.
Had no idea but I prefer the ultra-cheeky Roger Moore era when it comes to the Bond movies, so what do I know?
Best “Bond” themes, IMHO…”From Russia With Love” sung by Matt Monro and “Diamonds Are Forever” by Dame Shirley Bassey. If you’ve never heard either of these, I highly recommend investing 7-8 minutes to listen…you’ll be glad you did.
BTW…Best Bond line ever…Inappropriate, but very Bond…
Alas, the fact that the Bond themes typically share the name with the movie was hidden too deeply in my passive memory. As soon as I read the correct response, I slapped my head.
Ditto.
I don’t pay much attention to movie soundtracks and hit songs so did not expect to be able to think of any specifically, so, knowing he does a lot of musicals, I guessed Hugh Jackman, but I guess that is mostly stage musicals with him being so busy with action movies.
I went with Tom Cruise. 🙁
Didn’t even think of Bond, and I went way back in time to go with Gene Kelly, thinking specifically of “Singing In The Rain”. Oops!
What did Scott plan to buy with his winnings?
A marimba.
This is one of those finals I would’ve figured out if I had 40 seconds instead of 30.
The clue specifies “the last two,” because otherwise Louis Jourdain (Gigi and Three Coins in the Fountain) would also have been correct.
